from The Quarter acoustic music club, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire
In the interests of helping to limit the spread of the Corona virus and to protect QAMC members and other members of the public QAMC steering group has decided that it would be wisest for us to cancel all events from now until the end of June. If we get the all clear before then we will look to resuming. If not then we will review over the summer.
This unfortunately will include our previously advertised performance from Dan McKinnon. Previously scheduled for Tuesday 17/03/2020.
Apologies to all members.
Particular apologies to our booked artists. An email will be sent confirming our decision and offering a booking at a later date.

F1, MXGP & MotoGP are cancelling events and hurriedly re-scheduling them. In the vain hope. It is all about money and contractual complexities.

I am afraid we will have to hunker down, and resort to cyber sessions/singing. Though I can't see jamming working, the latency of the internet is real and variable. The technology is there though and has a window of opportunity. Micro$oft has been advertising Microsoft Teams on TV for months.

I can see some Folk Festivals throwing in the towel after losses this year.

The regular Friday sing at Cyprian's in San Francisco is still on. This sing met for years at the Clayton Street home of Faith Petric, and moved to Cyprian's Center after Faith died. This musical meeting is on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month, 8 PM to Midnight.

We had scheduled a campership benefit concert for Camp Harmony on April 18, but that concert has been postponed due to coronavirus-related concerns.

And as I said above, we cancelled the monthly Sacramento Family Song Circle until June 12.

More information at the Website of the San Francisco Folk Music Club, https://www.sffmc.org/.

And note that we haven't split this thread into national threads or whatever. This thread is meant to give people an overview of cancellations worldwide, and not to be a comprehensive index. If anyone would like to start an index thread for an area, go ahead and do it.
But since this is an international thread, please use names and dates that are universally understandable. I see notices above for the SMG and the TMSA, and I have no idea what these are.

I think that attitudes have changed rapidly worldwide over the last week. There are so many events that I just hate to miss, that I had planned to take the risk - even though I know darn well things would be better if everybody just stayed away from all crowds.
But events are being cancelled right and left, so the temptation to attend is being removed from me.
Good thing, I think. I've got lots of books to read and movies to watch, and the woods next door are full of wildflowers.

It turns out the reason Trump didn't block travel to and from the UK and the US is because he owns three golf clubs in the UK. He doesn't want to cut into his profits.

I wonder how this ban is affecting US citizens trying to return home? Taking a more circuitous route (fly to Canada then to the US?)

this thread is very confusing- it needs to be split into several parts at least- UK/Ireland/US/Canada/EU/Aus/NZ at the very least- it will be a LONG and USELESS list otherwise.

So far it is giving a general view. If you require a more specific region covered, start a new thread and label it carefully - Coronavirus Cancellations - XXXXXXXX and if you can't fit enough wording in the title use it in the thread it self and one of the moderators will add it to the title. --mudelf

OPINION
YOUNG AND UNAFRAID OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC? GOOD FOR YOU. NOW STOP KILLING PEOPLE | OPINION
A DOCTOR IN WESTERN EUROPE
ON 3/11/20 AT 2:29 PM EDT

I'm a doctor in a major hospital in Western Europe. Watching you Americans (and you, Brits) in these still-early days of the coronavirus pandemic is like watching a familiar horror movie, where the protagonists, yet again, split into pairs or decide to take a tour of a dark basement.

The real-life versions of this behavior are pretending this is just a flu; keeping schools open; following through with your holiday travel plans, and going into the office daily. This is what we did in Italy. We were so complacent that even when people with coronavirus symptoms started turning up, we wrote each off as a nasty case of the flu. We kept the economy going, pointed fingers at China and urged tourists to keep traveling. And the majority of us told ourselves and each other: this isn't so bad. We're young, we're fit, we'll be fine even if we catch it.

Fast-forward two months, and we are drowning. Statistically speaking—judging by the curve in China—we are not even at the peak yet, but our fatality rate is at over 6 percent, double the known global average.

Put aside statistics. Here is how it looks in practice. Most of my childhood friends are now doctors working in north Italy. In Milan, in Bergamo, in Padua, they are having to choose between intubating a 40-year-old with two kids, a 40-year old who is fit and healthy with no co-morbidities, and a 60-year-old with high blood pressure, because they don't have enough beds. In the hallway, meanwhile, there are another 15 people waiting who are already hardly breathing and need oxygen.

The army is trying to bring some of them to other regions with helicopters but it's not enough: the flow is just too much, too many people are getting sick at the same time.

We are still awaiting the peak of the epidemic in Europe: probably early April for Italy, mid-April for Germany and Switzerland, somewhere around that time for the UK. In the U.S., the infection has only just begun.

But until we're past the peak, the only solution is to impose social restrictions.

And if your government is hesitating, these restrictions are up to you. Stay put. Do not travel. Cancel that family reunion, the promotion party and the big night out. This really sucks, but these are special times. Don't take risks. Do not go to places where you are more than 20 people in the same room. It's not safe and it's not worth it.

But why the urgency, if most people survive?

Here's why: Fatality is the wrong yardstick. Catching the virus can mess up your life in many, many more ways than just straight-up killing you. "We are all young"—okay. "Even if we get the bug, we will survive"—fantastic. How about needing four months of physical therapy before you even feel human again. Or getting scar tissue in your lungs and having your activity level restricted for the rest of your life. Not to mention having every chance of catching another bug in hospital, while you're being treated or waiting to get checked with an immune system distracted even by the false alarm of an ordinary flu. No travel for leisure or business is worth this risk.

Now, odds are, you might catch coronavirus and might not even get symptoms. Great. Good for you. Very bad for everyone else, from your own grandparents to the random older person who got on the subway train a stop or two after you got off. You're fine, you're barely even sneezing or coughing, but you're walking around and you kill a couple of old ladies without even knowing it. Is that fair? You tell me.

My personal as well as professional view: we all have a duty to stay put, except for very special reasons, like, you go to work because you work in healthcare, or you have to save a life and bring someone to hospital, or go out to shop for food so you can survive. But when we get to this stage of a pandemic, it's really important not to spread the bug. The only thing that helps is social restriction. Ideally, the government should issue that instruction and provide a financial fallback—compensate business owners, ease the financial load on everyone as much as possible and reduce the incentive of risking your life or the lives of others just to make ends meet. But if your government or company is slow on the uptake, don't be that person. Take responsibility. For all but essential movement, restrict yourself.

This is epidemiology 101. It really sucks. It is extreme—but luckily, we don't have pandemics of this violence every year. So sit it out. Stay put. Don't travel. It is absolutely not worth it.

It's the civic and moral duty of every person, everywhere, to take part in the global effort to reduce this threat to humanity. To postpone any movement or travel that are not vitally essential, and to spread the disease as little as possible. Have your fun in June, July and August when this—hopefully—is over. Stay safe. Good luck.

I fully see the point of keeping this thread global: a friend in New Zealand had been planning to come to one of the now-cancelled events in Edinburgh. She is totally gutted and bereft as you can imagine. Haven't heard yet whether she can cancel her flights or will still come for a coronavirus holiday.
In the meantime, a private reunion of former colleagues is likely to be cancelled: one couple would have been coming from Australia. Oh, and btw, we're all retired medics in our 70s, so if we think it's a bad idea to take the risk, perhaps others should also be taking avoidance seriously.

Joe, yes you should cancel. This is how it spreads, and if it is in your community, it is likely that at least a couple of your 20 will be infected but showing no symptoms. Cancel until the virus is gone.

I hope the United States in general, and Washington State is particular will start taking this seriously. It spreads through contact and by breathing the same air, yet we're still having concerts, malls are open, schools are open, restaurants are open. There is no wide-spread testing and no cure, or even resistance to it. Someplace around 3 per cent of those who catch will die, and there is a good chance that almost all of us are going to catch it, and that means several million deaths. I hope I'm over-reacting, but if I'm not, won't all those people look silly, at least the ones who are still alive?

Remember that the CDC is being controlled by Trump the liar, who put Pence in charge. Pence doesn't believe in science, and insists that all announcements from the CDC go though him. In other words, we have no reason to believe anything they say. They both have track records of saying things in public that are the opposite of science and truth.

I see your point, but there are lots of advantages to allowing people to see the entire scope of the problem, so I think that it's best to keep this thread as it is.
