The problem with Skype is time lags, and they are frequent. That said, perhaps it's got better in the past few years. Good luck with it.

We ( a local group) are looking for something. So far without success. We have tried Zoom and Video call on what's app. Neither allowed more than one musician to sing and play. Any suggestions very welcome particularly if tried and successful. Next we will look at Skype.

So Zoom is no good for choruses, then? From what I have experienced it is a bit like the Eurovision juries....Any other platforms. I will be trying zoom to run a virtual quiz in three weeks.

I recently did a Zoom live stream, the technology is easy to use but really only allows one person to speak/sing at a time (so no sing-a-longs). Everyone can sing along by themselves, but you don't get the 'feel' of a folk club singing together.

More of a circle session where the singer is to arrogant to let anyone play/sing along with them. Or they hate having a loud off-key harmony ruining their focus.

Our local folk club had a trial run on Zoom last night. Yes it worked, although you can't all sing at the same time and hear each other, and there's a slight time delay. But the host can mute all except one, so we can all hear that one perform.

So for 40 minutes or so we heard a few songs, chatted a bit, admired each other's loo roll collections, etc.

I believe if the host coughs up for the fee for the full program, there's then no time limit. It's not expensive, especially if you all share the cost.

I've seen that - I am thinking about online gatherings using platforms like zoom. I registered for free and when I get a spare hour or so I will navigate my way round it. The free version allows up to 100 participants for up to 45 minutes, the pro version up to 24 hours... So it could be a means of providing a platform for those who make a living as performers. I'm prepared to put some time into this, but not on my own, so if anyone else is interested (UK because of time differences) send me a private message, and I will set up a zoom conference call next week - when I have completed my distance learning assignment.

There is a virtual folk club on Facebook. Search for Covideo Folk Club.

On Friday I attended a virtual networking meeting on Zoom and it just occurred to me that although folk (and other gatherings) in the UK have been effectively shut down the technology is there for online gatherings. Is there anybody in Mudcatland with the tech know how to try this out, or even better, has this been done already.

We all need to think about not just protecting our health, but also our well-being until life resumes some sense of normality again.
