The county I live in has a 99% resident vaccination rate, the highest in the country. Kids over 5 will be vaccinated before Xmas.

Have to wonder what counts as a resident, and whether it's basically a county full of retirement homes if the under 5s make up less than 1% of the residents!

Speculation News reports";^/ The price to own the illusion of safety, security, and protection against all danger has gone up to 50 billion dollars. While this is good news for Zuckerberg it is anathma for the average billionaire. The fragility of the illusion as well as looming debt ceiling issues has the potential to go as high as 500 billion to own the illusion of absolute protection which will eliminate all but a handful of billionaires.
Dr. Grisley says "The average person only has the illusion of safety via conspiracy theory and on the other hand, Science and/or religion. All the politics and propoganda that deals with the issue is just entertainment. In the distant past the mere greedy quest for power and immortality was just as expensive in adjusted money but now the illusion includes many more probabilites and manmade catastrophes. As a result the safety illusion market is highly unstable and may crash leaving even multi billionaires out in the cold/heat".

From today's Guardian.

Lies and conspiracy theories about Covid-19, which have amassed millions of views and are accessible to young children, have been available on the social media platform TikTok for months.

TikTok accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers that discourage vaccination and peddle myths about Covid survival rates were uncovered by NewsGuard, an organisation that monitors online misinformation.

NewsGuard said it published its findings in June and sent them to the UK government and World Health Organization (WHO), but the content remained on the platform.

The revelation comes amid renewed concern about the impact that social media is having on young people, after it was reported that Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, had internal research showing its app was harming teenagers.

As part of its investigation, NewsGuard said children as young as nine had been able to access the content, despite TikTok only permitting full access to the app for those aged 13 and over. Three participants in the organisation’s research who were under 13 were able to create accounts on the app by entering fake dates of birth.

TikTok told the Guardian it worked diligently to take action on content and accounts that spread misinformation.

Some of the accounts seen by the Guardian had posted individual videos containing Covid misinformation that had attracted up to 9.2m views. The misinformation included false comments about side-effects of specific brands of Covid vaccine and misleading comparisons between Covid survival rates and vaccine efficacy rates.

Alex Cadier, the UK managing director for NewsGuard, said: “TikTok’s failure to stop the spread of dangerous health misinformation on their app is unsustainable bordering on dangerous. Despite claims of taking action against misinformation, the app still allows anti-vaccine content and health hoaxes to spread relatively unimpeded.

“This is made worse by the fact that the more anti-vaccine content kids interact with, the more anti-vaccine content they’ll be shown. If self-regulation isn’t working for social media platforms, then regulation, like the online safety bill, has to be the way forward to keep young people safe online.”

I would go further. It's clear that social media have neither the resources nor the will to regulate themselves. I'd like to see Facebook, Instagram and TikTok disappear from the face of the earth. Failing that (and I do try to be a realist...), I should like to see our governments having the ability to instantly pull the plug on them as soon as this kind of content rears its head.

Heros and thugs
The Heros are, doctors and nurses.
The thugs crap on the capitol floor
Heros save lives, thugs shout curses
thugs say its freedom they savor
Like freedom to not use vaccines
or never use toilet paper
it stinks in their vacinity

The heros are, the teachers and nurses
The thugs threaten and hit folks at school
Teachers live and thugs take hearses.
Some folks are wise and others are...wait for it...Fooled
As the smart grow dumb and the dumb go insane
To say it out loud it feels inane
Smart folks do their research and probe
Thugs put a plug in it and explode.

Well I read the piece about Australia and the protest. It shouldn't really need pointing out that Oz, and NZ too, are, in effect very remote "islands" with huge distances across oceans to the next place along. Moreover, both countries have sparse populations spread over large areas compared with other western nations. So they've done very well in keeping case numbers low, but they do start with that two-pronged advantage. Just sayin'.

And let's keep very clear in our minds the stark difference between anti-vaxxers and people who object to mandatory vaccination. I'm in that latter camp (I'm not going over it all again), but I am as pro-vaccine as anyone else. In fact, like a parrot I've said a number of times that the ONLY way to control this pandemic is to get the whole world vaccinated. Check my posts for that, you'll find it in them writ large. Saying that I think it's unethical and anti-democratic to force vaccination on people under pain of losing their jobs does in no way align me with conspiracy-theory anti-vaxxers, and it would be nice to not be lazily slurred in that manner. Indeed, I jumped at the first opportunity I had to get my jabs and I can't wait for my booster. If pubs and night clubs and football stadiums wish to exclude unvaccinated people, I'm right with them on that. That's their right. But governments passing laws that allow companies to sack people for refusing the jabs is crossing a red line for me. I live in the real world, and I know that interviewees for jobs in, say, care homes will be asked about their vaccinations and will be rejected if they reveal themselves to be refusers. That's fine by me, but that is the company doing that, not the law of the land, and 'twas ever thus (I'm pretty certain that I was once turned down for a job in the Civil Service because I was a CND activist - the buggers were even tapping my phone! I'm even fine with that decision, though obviously not the phone-tapping...) but a superb lady who looked after my mum wonderfully in her care home for the last two years of my mum's life is now facing dismissal by statute because she doesn't want the jab. That is just wrong.

Save Australia? Nah, we're right thanks Earlier this week news broke that a small group of protestors in New York City had taken to the streets to express their opposition toward mandatory COVID-19 vaccine jabs for teachers, and given the rise of conspiracy theories and misinformation about vaccines being propagated through social media channels in recent times, that’s not entirely a surprise.

Anti-vaxxers gonna anti-vax! What was a surprise, however, was the fact that this group of disgruntled American citizens were waving Australian flags, and chanting “Save Australia!” as they marched toward the Australian consulate in Midtown, leaving many of us here in Oz wondering, “Wait… what?”

It seems there’s been a rise in discussions on right-wing media platforms about Australia’s ongoing lockdowns and the recent protests in Melbourne that saw a crowd of what can only be described as an intoxicating (and in some cases, intoxicated) combination of riled up genuine tradies and hi-vis wearing anti-lockdown campaigners teaming up to wreak havoc in the CBD, ultimately culminating – much like most Australian wedding receptions – in a rousing rendition of Daryl Braithwaite’s Horses.

Many in the States saw footage of these rioters violently clashing with Victoria Police as further proof that Australia has become an authoritarian state, with only a few brave souls prepared to rise up against mandatory vaccinations and a seemingly endless lockdown.

... The fact that Australia’s COVID-19 death rate is 25.36 deaths per million as opposed to America’s 2107.29 deaths per million is an indication that as grinding as the lockdown measures feel, they’re working. If you disagree, I urge you to nominate a member of your immediate family you’d like to put forward for a preventable death since, if you’re advocating for a virus free-for-all so you can taste sweet freedom ASAP, that’s essentially what you’re asking of a fellow citizen. (read on)

tradies? = construction workers, who were angry about restrictions to their work day. Not all of the demonstrators were tradies, the ones with dusty scuffed work boots were, but high-vis vests were worn by a lot of other people.

Oh Stilly, a vaccine to protect against malaria would be such a godsend! It kills thousands and thousands in Africa, including many known to my husband in Ivory Coast.
I've always been perfectly accepting of an armful of jabs when travelling to the Tropics. Yellow fever (usually obligatory, with a need to show proof) and about five other nasty diseases - cholera, typhoid, meningitis, tetanus etc.
Also had polio, TB etc jabs as a child/teenager. No ill-effects from any of these (except the Yellow Fever one -hallucinations and delirium!)
But I agree with Steve that it isn't ethical to force unwilling people to be vaccinated. However, the rest of us have the right to protect ourselves from being infected by the unvaccinated, so some rules should apply about entry to community events, restaurants, bars, care homes and so on.

Just a note on this, by the way:

"When's the last time you had polio, Steve? Smallpox? Both of those have been vaccinated against for decades (Smallpox not any more because it is considered eradicated.)

Measles? Mumps? Rubella? Whooping Cough? Until the last 10 years or so it was standard for children to get these shots before starting school. Now that there are anti-vaxxers around, there are large community breakouts of these preventable diseases."

As a little lad I had all my polio jabs. Smallpox was never on offer unless you were going overseas (which I never did). I caught measles, mumps and rubella, and chicken pox lest we forget, in the days before vaccinations against them were available. My two children, now in their forties, were both vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella as soon as we were advised to get them done, in spite of idiotic scare stories about the measles vaccine. I made sure that I was always immunised against tetanus too, and I've had my flu jab every year for decades. At present I've had both Coronavirus jabs and am waiting impatiently for my booster as well as this year's flu jab.

I don't care very much to be characterised as someone who sides with anti-vaxxers, thank you very much. Just thought I'd mention it (again). We are, in my view, perfectly entitled to have different perspectives on this. My perspective on compulsion is that it would be undemocratic, and that we in the UK and US have been extremely lazy, and behind the curve, when it comes to giving the public full information and persuasion about vaccines, and that we are severely at fault for permitting social media to allow their members to propagate conspiratorial, scaremongering nonsense about vaccines. I have never subscribed to any of those social media, and I simply can't understand why decent people still have anything to do with them.

I've given you my considered point of view about whether vaccination should be mandatory. It's a respectable point of view shared, quite likely, if not by a majority of people, by a large minority in the UK. Therefore it ill-behoves you to call me "silly." I've told you that I prefer persuasion, along with information and a severe clampdown on damaging scaremongering. And, if anyone is silly, it's your administration (far more than ours, though we're not innocent) who allow Facebook, etc., to be infested with anti-vaccine idiots and for preachers in your Bible Belt to preach about the evils of vaccines and how God will punish the vaccinated. The whole idea is to stop the pandemic. The way to do that is to get the world vaccinated. Nothing else will do. Most of those people you are excoriating for refusing to be vaccinated (and who you'd like to see lose their jobs) are victims of those self-same idiots. So you need to select your target far more carefully.

It used to be that if you were working in food service you had to first go get a chest xray at the county to be sure you didn't have tuberculosis. You can't work around people if you have it. If you do and don't take your medication, they can quarantine or imprison and force you to take the medication.

Typhoid Mary had to be imprisoned because she refused to stay away from food service and kept making people sick.

Don't be silly about the occasional mandatory vaccine. It's for everyone's good.

Did you know they've just approved a vaccination for malaria? WHO greenlights the world's first malaria vaccine — but it's not a perfect shot. If it doesn't become politicized it may save a whole bunch of lives - particularly of children. If nations want to make compulsory a vaccine for populations for something like this, I'll be in line.

I think that it should be up to individual institutions to decide who can enter or not enter. No more government edicts, please. My "vaccine passport" is on my NHS app (to be clear, not the track-and-trace shambles which I deleted months ago). I'd be more than happy to show it if asked at the entrance to somewhere or other. I never have been asked for that, but I have been asked by two neurotic shopkeepers (out of all the dozens of shops I've been to since the great easing-up of July) to put on a mask as a condition of entry. The irony is that my unasked-about vaccinations are invaluable whereas the scruffy, ancient, just-in-case mask shoved in my cargo pants pocket* is almost certainly useless. But if it keeps them happy...

*As with most mask-shunning folk these days...

The Welsh Assembly voted on Tuesday evening to introduce vaccine passports for certain large events and large night-clubs.
The vote was carried by a single vote, and would not have been passed but for the inability of one Conservative member to log in to vote from the Conservative Party Conference.
I'm not saying that it was a 'stitch-up', but I'm not aware of any important, or contentious, votes being held (in Cardiff) during the course of the Labour Party Conference.

I'm pro-vaccination and we are fully vaccinated. I can't wait for my booster. But I am implacably opposed to compulsion. What kind of world, what kind of "democracy," do we live in when you can force someone to submit to having a needle containing a foreign substance stuck into him, under pain of losing his livelihood? We have to try much harder to persuade, not force. It would help if we could see all the more clearly how those evil people on social media, and those evil preachermen, are doing so much harm. There may be a few thousand people who you'd like to see lose their jobs for refusing the vaccine. But there are tens of MILLIONS who are being persuaded, in effect, to put your whole country in danger by these charlatans. It's about time we all realised who the real enemy is. Sacking people who have been hoodwinked by those charlatans is nothing more than a perverted form of trumpism. Go after the social media idiots and the preachers. And shame on you if you connive in this by subscribing to Facebook.

I get a magazine called The Week, and it seems reliable. It just said that the typical cost of a hospital stay for Covid is over $31,000. If a ventilator and ICU are required, cost is over $300,000.

Maybe if we publicized that, we could conquer some vaccine hesitancy. Tell the battlers something they can understand, something that cannot be turned into an emotional issue.

This week I heard a discussion of the two-month cycle that COVID-19 seems to follow.

Trying to make sense of COVID’s mysterious 2-month cycle
The reasons remain somewhat unclear, and there is no guarantee that the decline in caseloads will continue. But the turnaround is now large enough — and been going on long enough — to deserve attention.

The number of new daily cases in the United States has fallen 35% since Sept. 1. Worldwide, cases have also dropped more than 30% since late August. “This is as good as the world has looked in many months,” Dr. Eric Topol of Scripps Research wrote last week.

The most encouraging news is that the most serious forms of COVID are also declining. The number of Americans hospitalized with COVID has fallen about 25% since Sept. 1. Daily deaths — which typically change direction a few weeks after cases and hospitalizations — have fallen 10% since Sept. 20. It is the first sustained decline in deaths since early summer.

If we're smart we'll be ready for the next cycle. It sounds like there will finally be a supply of rapid COVID tests available in early December (the FDA was initially more interested in a test that needed a doctor's office and 24 hours for the result). I read about people in Europe offering to ship their inexpensive and 98% accurate tests to friends here in the US.

For whatever reason, the state of Alaska is in sad shape with covid. Juneau, its capital, is doing better than the state as a whole but the delta variant is still surging here too. That kind of surprises- and disturbs- me, because we have a fairly high rate of vaccinations.

Does anyone care to venture a prediction regarding the virus's persistence? Back a few months I thought 2021 would be a whole lot better than last year but now I'm not even confident about 2022.

What really bothers me is that the longer we take to get ahead of the virus, the more chance it has to develop more mutations.

Willful ignorance is stupidity and in this country we have an awful lot of willful ignorance. Just this last week I discovered that two groups of people I have liked, one of them in Texas and the other in Florida, are among them.

Covid News: New Study Finds Pfizer Vaccine Provides Strong Protection Against Hospitalization

The upshot of this article about vaccine research says that Pfizer provided 90% coverage for 6 months:
The Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine is 90 percent effective at preventing hospitalization for up to six months, with no signs of waning during that time period, according to a large new U.S. study conducted by researchers at Pfizer and Kaiser Permanente.

The vaccine also provides powerful protection against the highly contagious Delta variant, the scientists found. In a subset of people who had samples of their virus sequenced, the vaccine was 93 percent effective against hospitalization from Delta, compared with 95 percent against hospitalization from other variants.

Further on it says:
Data from Israel indicates that the Pfizer vaccine’s effectiveness against infection dropped to 39 percent in late June and early July, down from 95 percent in January through early April. But it remained more than 90 percent effective against severe disease during that time period. . . . Overall, the vaccine was 90 percent effective against hospitalization and 73 percent effective against infection. Among those who were 65 or older, it was 86 percent effective against hospitalization and 61 percent effective against infection.

This talks about how much protection is restored with the booster:

Pfizer says Israel data shows third Covid shot restores protection from infection to 95% as it makes case to FDA for boosters
A third dose of Pfizer’s Covid vaccine six months after a second shot restores protection from infection to 95% in a real-world setting in Israel, according to data submitted by the company to the Food and Drug Administration.

While the effectiveness of the mRNA vaccine wanes over time, a booster shot was shown to elicit an immune response similar to the protection generated after a second dose, Pfizer said in a 52-page presentation released by the agency Wednesday.

This is good news. I got my booster yesterday.

It's one dyslexic to another Don, though I think the version you have is more pronounced.

The social changes Covid is causing may call for a change in Maslow's hierarcy of human priorities;
Air, water, food, shelter, vaccination locator and companionship. :^/

PS: SRS, Now that I no longer see Steve Shaw posts on my page I have noticed you sometimes respond defensively to his posts that follow mine. I do not wish to have any reminder of nonsense and would hope you might either ignore or remove what you consider misinformation. A Steve free enviorment helps me think more clearly without narcisist distraction. Thank you for expanding condensed observation into larger forms and website confirmation. Amos advised me repeatedly to show other site confirmations. I finally try more often as time allows. Experts with dyslexia often claim there is no cure but I say they are mostly wrong, with practice it can get much better.

The summer coronavirus surge has started to ebb, but delta’s danger remains

A nationwide decline in new infections and hospitalizations is fueled by sharp drops in Southern states that were hit hard by the highly contagious delta variant. Hospital admissions nationwide crested above a weekly average of 100,000 in early September and are still at levels not seen since the winter, before vaccines were widely available. New infections plateaued in the first half of September, averaging above 150,000 daily, and are now on track to slip below 100,000.

And down the page a bit:
The pandemic marks another grim milestone: 1 in 500 Americans have died of covid-19
In places like Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and the Carolinas, the latest wave appears to be following a similar pattern of a sharp spike followed by steep plunge seen in the United Kingdom, India and other places battered by delta. Epidemiologists say this pattern suggests the virus is rapidly burning through pockets of unvaccinated people before hitting a wall.

And this:
Experts including Rubin are now paying attention to states in the North and Upper Midwest that are starting to see cases and hospitalizations creep up, which was expected after schools reopened and people gather indoors with few restrictions as chilly weather returns. Case upticks alone are not cause for alarm if hospitalization spikes do not follow, experts said. Public health leaders have largely accepted the novel coronavirus will never be vanquished, instead turning into an endemic threat such as the flu and other respiratory viruses.

I never even thought about Trump just then but instead a familar crumudgeon. The first alerts to pandemic risk were for the elderly, but now the virus is more uniform in infection with a few exceptions.
Trump deliberately lied to improve the financial gains for his investments and the economy at large. Toward the end he was just about the same insane guy he started as. The continual lie was his golden goose, until most of us saw it was sick. imo

If he had come out with his tepid endorsement of vaccines earlier in the year it would have saved a lot of black lives considering how hard their community was hit by the virus and how much pull he has in that community. I'm not quite ready to canonize him.

In these glum times I've watched the smart become dumb and the dumb become insane.
I've watched the smart assume what is truth to them and deny research
without evidence and hold dear to their initial opinion.
I've seen the dumb change their minds 180 degrees about vaccines
in order to support their white priviledge candidate.
They are willing to abstractly die for their hateful cause.
Mostly I see the old hold onto brittle beliefs.
The good news is that 9 out of 10 have not lost their minds.

Color me skeptical but I'm sure a major consideration for the legacy-chasing King James was the prospect of not being allowed to play in Brooklyn, San Francisco and perhaps some other NBA arenas due to local ordinances if he went unvaxxed. Imagine the impact he might have had if he'd been promoting vaccinations back in the spring. I agree with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's hard line- "There is no room for players who are willing to risk the health and lives of their teammates, the staff and the fans simply because they are unable to grasp the seriousness of the situation or do the necessary research,"

Pregnant women are no more prone to catching the delta variant than anyone else, but they are more likely to develop severe illness. Let's stick to the facts.

Alabama has one of the lowest vaccination rates of any US state. Mississippi is another. The reasons for this need to be urgently addressed. Unvaccinated people are a huge threat to everyone.

One result of not testing and not vaccinating is that Idaho morgues are running out of space for bodies as covid-19 deaths mount.

Yes, after a few views, various newspapers require subscriptions. The Washington Post is only $4 a month after a free six month trail if you have Amazon Prime. The Times is pricier. But try a different browser or go in and clean out your cookies to reset the monthly allowance. I subscribe to The Atlantic also, so tend to post a lot of their stuff also.

Here's a bit from the link above:
Dave Salove has watched his morgue fill with bodies. Covid-19 victims have poured into the funeral home he runs in Boise, Idaho, in recent weeks, as the state contends with an unprecedented spike in deaths driven by the delta variant of the coronavirus. His 16-slot refrigeration room is over capacity. Other funeral homes have neared a tipping point, too.

Intent on avoiding the makeshift morgues that cropped up in the Northeast during the pandemic’s first wave, Salove this week brought in a refrigerated trailer to hold the growing number of dead. By Friday, there were seven corpses inside, up from two the day before. Six more were on their way from another facility.

“I’d barely gotten it installed, and we had to start using it,” Salove said. “Right now, we are seeing that spike.”

As covid-19 deaths reach record highs in the state of 1.8 million, hard-hit areas are struggling to keep pace with the surge in victims. Some hospitals, funeral homes and coroners say they’ve been pushed to the limit. Some morticians have even started embalming bodies that wouldn’t normally need the procedure so they don’t have to refrigerate them, the Idaho Statesman reported.

The backlog is so bad in some places that people have had to wait weeks to cremate their loved ones.

“We’re so far behind on cremations,” said Lance Cox, owner of Bell Tower Funeral Home in Post Falls, Idaho. “That’s really how it impacts the families the most. You can bring in backup refrigeration options in an emergency, but you can’t bring in a backup crematory.”

The dire situation in Idaho, one of the least vaccinated states in the country, is another grisly illustration of what happens when a state fails to contain infections.

I agree that frequent testing is a big part of the fight. As far as I know, lateral flow test kits (not the same thing, I know) are still freely available here. There have been rumblings from the government that perhaps we should be paying for them. Bad move. I have a small stash of them in a cupboard. They have been accused of being unreliable. Well I've used them twice now and I regard meself as a fairly rigorous chap when it comes to carefully following orders. They are not especially easy to use, at least for the first couple of times. I suspect that they're quite reliable - when used correctly.

But, and I don't mind saying it again, it's all about getting the world vaccinated. I looked earlier at the state-by-state vaccination rates in the US. I noticed, broad brush, that many of the states below 50% vaccination are in the south/Bible Belt. I'll let you tell me the reasons for that.

It seems you have to sign up to read all of the New York Times article.

I did read the Nolte article. It reads like a spoof piece but unfortunately it is not. I did search further on Nolte. It would appear he has been vaccinated and urged others to do so as well. That seems to upset some of his twitter followers.

And then there's this—We Need to Rethink Our COVID Testing Priorities

Rapid antigen COVID tests are cheap to produce, easy to use, and can report results in a matter of minutes. They’re a powerful tool for stopping the spread of COVID because they allow people to test frequently and, if results are positive, quarantine immediately rather than waiting one to five days for a PCR test result. So why hasn’t the U.S. embraced rapid antigen tests more fully? Michael Mina argues that the country has overlooked the power of rapid antigen tests because we’ve been consumed by a singular focus: vaccines.
