Subject: Review: Mystic Seaport closed indefinitely From: GUEST,Julia L Date: 31 Mar 20 - 10:53 AM This from this website https://patch.com/connecticut/stonington/mass-layoffs-mystic-seaport-museum MYSTIC, CT — Mystic Seaport Museum Inc. will lay off 199 employees, 68 of whom are full-time workers, according to a filing with the Connecticut Department of Labor. The layoffs will take effect April 1. The pandemic has "crippled the Museum's business," according to the document. "These layoffs should be considered permanent, as we cannot estimate when the Museum will reopen and when we will need to increase staffing levels," the document reads. "Notice was given as soon as possible due to the unforeseen circumstances of a loss of business due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, the National Emergency declared by the President of the United States, the state of emergency declared by the Governor of Connecticut and the various state orders and recommendations designed to help contain the spread of COVID-19." Mystic Seaport Museum Inc. is not part of a union, meaning that bumping rights, which would allow employees to be relocated, do not exist. The museum closed to the public and canceled upcoming events as of March 13. However, the museum's digital resources remain available. |

Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport closed indefinitely From: mg Date: 31 Mar 20 - 06:31 PM very sad that this had to happen. perhaps there will be other small festivals once the contagion has died down. |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport closed indefinitely From: EBarnacle Date: 31 Mar 20 - 10:40 PM Lynn Noel and others have been holding on line Sings of various sorts. It's a pale substitute for the Main event but it's better than crawling into a hole and it keeps us in contact with each other. Thank the Lord we are in an era of electronic communication. Perhaps they are planning to put the Dutton in place of the Australia. |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport closed indefinitely From: Susan of DT Date: 03 Apr 20 - 12:33 PM I just got notice from Geoff Kaufman that the Sea Music Festival is definitely cancelled for this year. |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport closed indefinitely From: EBarnacle Date: 03 Apr 20 - 01:24 PM Greg Bullough brings up an important point that all of the field staff are fired w/ no benefits but the Fat Cats stay in place. Who will be there for next year when they put on the next festival? Do they really expect the underpaid workers to come back for more abuse? HMMMM |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport closed indefinitely From: GUEST Date: 04 Apr 20 - 12:14 PM Barnacle, You have no idea what you are talking about with terms like "Fat Cats" The Seaport has always operated on a razor thin monetary margin. No visitors- no money. Pretty simple math. The people who are left have had hours cut way back. Is the security dept. part of your fat- cat definition ? Maybe the people that maintain the pumps for the Morgan or Conrad. How about the three people (hours cut) that maintain the Interpretation dept. Next time think before making unhelpful and inaccurate commentary. |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport closed indefinitely From: EBarnacle Date: 04 Apr 20 - 10:58 PM Guest, take a look at the salaries of the execs. Greg B brought their tax filing up. If they have taken major pay cuts or been laid off, I will be very to recant. I agree that the seaport is facing a major financial disaster. |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport closed indefinitely From: EBarnacle Date: 06 Apr 20 - 04:49 PM I don't know how solid dates are about the Seaport's reopening but the WoodenBoat show has been set to occur in mid-August. |
