Subject: I really miss folk clubs From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 05 Apr 20 - 01:17 PM I really miss folk clubs. What goes on there may not be the dictionary definition of folk music, but something transpires there. Something of the people that has nothing to do with commerciality and show business. This week I worked out what I was doing wrong with my baritone ukulele - which I've owned for about two years - and which other folk club members play . but up to this week sounded like a crap guitar to my ears - whoever played it. such a drag - no one to share my discovery with. I quite sympathise with these blokes who post videos of themselves sing and playing - however I think making videos is a different skill set to doing a decent floorspot. |

Subject: RE: I really miss folk clubs From: JHW Date: 05 Apr 20 - 04:32 PM I kept wingeing that they used to be much better but oh to go out to the most mediocre night now we can't. Any FC, any beer. My last FC outing 1st March, Gt.Broughton. |

Subject: RE: I really miss folk clubs From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 05 Apr 20 - 07:25 PM I've been thinking the same! I think there may very well be more American style house parties when this is over. More and more Folk Venues are in existing clubs and arts centres. Conservative clubs-West Indian (Yes in Rugby-a great night as well)and Church Halls, so if the traditional pub is not an option, we will all find our way some where else I'm sure. |
Subject: RE: I really miss folk clubs From: GUEST,Pseudonymous Date: 06 Apr 20 - 04:59 AM What about buskers? Shall we have to learn to lob coins into the hat/guitar case/dog box from a six foot distance? I live somewhere with back yards and walls: we could each be in our own yard and make music over the walls. I like that idea. |
Subject: RE: I really miss folk clubs From: Dave Sutherland Date: 06 Apr 20 - 07:46 AM It would have been Tigerfolk's monthly meeting last night (with Mike Wison as guest) so no wonder I felt more restless that usual yesterday evening. We have made the committment to send out our newsletter, Tatters, to everyone on our list during this period of closure and updatle our Facebook page each month so that our members don't lose touch. |

Subject: RE: I really miss folk clubs From: Vincent Jones Date: 06 Apr 20 - 10:55 AM I discovered the Bracknell club last year, which is great. When I first moved south I could only find open mic places. I don't know if this is universal, but they seemed as far removed from folk clubs as is possible to be - people go there to perform and when not performing spend the time nattering. No one went to listen, but the amplification meant that it was possible to do so over the yatter. Mind you, no club could ever beat The Duke of York in Eccles in its 1970s heyday, especially when Ted Edwards was in. |
