Wondering if anyone has recordings of The Chieftains concerts as listed here:

Also we are looking for the first concert The Chieftains played in the (Royal) Albert Hall in March 1975. It was recorded because a little of it was shown on the Paddy Moloney Documentary in 2015.

We - Michael Tubridy and I - are seeking early recordings of The Chieftains.

Michael writes! "You are unearthing a lot of memories for me now!! When I think back, I realise we played the Albert Hall twice in 1975, on March 17th (which was the one which convinced us to go professional), and again on 8th October. We met Jo Lustig at the beginning of February 1975, and he persuaded us to do the 17th March - I’ve no idea how he was able to arrange that, but he did, and it sold out! So I don’t know who recorded it that night, but very unlikely to be either the BBC or RTÉ, but there is definitely a recording because a clip from it was shown on Paddy’s ]Moloney] documentary. While my main interest is in the 17th March, still the BBC recording of 8th October would be of great interest to me also. Thanks, Michael."

You may want to try sugarmegs.org, which sores and streams a vast number of gig recordings. I know there were Chieftains ones there but can't get there at the minute

Hi - I have a cassette tape recording of the Chieftains playing in Aberdeen in 1977, I think it was in "Her Majesty's Theatre". Now that tape is 43 years old, but I've just listened to some of it, and I would say the quality is surprisingly good, considering its age. Might that be of any interest ?
I do also remember being absolutely astounded to see the "Chieftains" walking by on the other side of the road in Kinross, at the Kinross Traditional Music Festival, I think in 1975. The band had been playing in Edinburgh, had heard of the festival and decided to drop in past on the Sunday afternoon. I have great memories of seeing them for the first time on stage in Kinross Town Hall - but no recordings or photos, unfortunately.

That is brilliant. Michael Tubridy and indeed myself are self-isolating (as we all are). He's in Dublin. I'm in London.

If you can digitise the cassette that would be great. The format we'd really like is WAV or FLAC. Or MP3 at 320kpps.

Ignore the 1985. We have tracked down a recording of The Chieftains at the John Peel Wiki archive. This was recorded at the Paris Theatre on 1-April-1976. It was aired on 24-April-1976 when the group was touring the USA.

It is introduced by John Peel with the words: "Start of show (JP intro): "...they are fighting I understand about who is going to keep it at home in the kitchen, but they won it and deservedly so. And their music has an amazingly wide appeal - covers everybody from Grateful Dead buffs through to classical music fans, and amongst the audience here in the Paris are students from Germany and students from France. And all of them I think capable of appreciating the music of - the Chieftains!"

But what was the award he refers to?

Looks like they worked on the Academy Award-winning soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's 1975 film Barry Lyndon, which could be what they're referring to.

They were also named Group of the Year in 1975 by Melody Maker

I saw them at the University of Western Australia in the early 1980s. David Bell strode straight across the auditorium stage to the piano on the other side, saying "I've heard of this piano!", and treated us to a classical piece or two on it, before returning to his harp for the set.

Haven't forgotten about you. I've had a go at digitising the opening sets from the concert. Could I forward them to you as MP3 files to see whether or not you think it worth my while continuing ? email address required.
If you don't think the quality good enough, I will contact my friend with the recording studio to see if she can improve the quality.
Alternatively, I can send you the cassette tape itself to you, if you have any contacts who might clean it up a bit.

Also we have pro. Nakamichi cassette decks - these lift the pressure pad off the read head and give a truer capture. Of course the cassette can be posted back, and the digitised files (WAV, FLAC, MP3 320kbps) can be sent to you too.

There is a documentary about the band on RTE's Nationwide as I write. Some old footage. But at some point they said a number of original members had since died and Michael Tubridy was included in the list, for feck's sake!

What year was their trip to China? Used to have that on VHS cassette.
