Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Apr 20 - 05:18 PM This is from the link that Starship posted: https://www.petforums.co.uk/threads/thinking-of-getting-a-border-collie-but-undecided.444447/page-2 Needs some cleaning up, but it's a start. Rich Hall has just released a song called the Border Collie song. He wrote if after watching his neighbour's dogs on his ranch in Montana. Here's the lyrics: BORDER COLLIE SONG (Rich Hall) I'm ready to work, I'm ready to work, I'm ready to work, let's go! What's the hold up? I'm ready to work, let's go I am ready to work, I'm ready to herd I'm ready to go, just say the word In case you dogs have not heard, I'm a working dog Now I've got issues, I'll admit, I basically don't know when to quit My one and only occupation, keep those herds in a tight formation Missing heifers, wayward strays, it tends to put a damper on my day It's in my blood, what can I say? I'm a goddamn working dog Get off my porch, get out of my way I'm a goddamn working dog. Working dog, you son of a bitch, I take my bath in a drainage ditch Wait one second Let me scratch this itch (plink plink plink) I'm back Yippee-ki-oh, yippie-ki-yay I can do this all damn day, get off of my porch, get out of my way I'm a goddamn working dog Off my porch, get out of my way, I'm a goddamn working dog." Pretty good description of a Border Collie. I think this youtube video is Rich Hall himself. If so, the lyrics above are way off. Whatever the case, this performance is terrific: |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Apr 20 - 05:46 PM Hall's introduction: "I wrote this song in three minutes, sitting on a fence post in Montana, watching a border collie, and its supercilious attitude towards every other dog. It's called "The Border Collie Song." BORDER COLLIE SONG (Rich Hall) I'm ready to work, I'm ready to work, Fuck, let's work, let's go! Ready to work, Who's ready to work, I'm ready to work, I'm ready to go, I'm ready to work, I'm ready to herd C'mon, just say the word In case you dogs have not heard, I'm a goddamn working dog Well, I got issues, I'll admit; basically don't know when to quit, My one and only occupation, keep them herds in a tight formation. Missing heifers, wayward strays, tend to put a damper on my day It's in my blood, what can I say? I'm a goddamn working dog. [I need a nap. I'll get back to this later. Contributions gladly accepted.] [this verse is a disaster, and then I gave up] Give-a-guy-o, Give-a-guy-yip ....from a medicine lick (need help here) No time to waste, gotta get there quick, ...start flyin' and the dust starts stingin' (??) Get off my porch, get out of my way I'm a goddamn working dog. Working dog, you son of a bitch, I take my bath in a drainage ditch Wait one second Let me scratch this itch (plink plink plink) I'm back Yippee-ki-oh, yippie-ki-yay I can do this all damn day, get off of my porch, get out of my way I'm a goddamn working dog Off my porch, get out of my way, I'm a goddamn working dog."

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: GUEST,Starship Date: 11 Apr 20 - 07:08 PM I doubt there is a 'definitive' set of lyrics. Looks to me like he adds or omits stanzas as the spirit(s) move him. Thompson, here's a link to him singing the song with the lines you refer to at 5:59. The stanza is the last one in the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BqUsEF63kE |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: GUEST,Gallus Moll Date: 12 Apr 20 - 05:14 AM The late John Wright used to work as a shepherd in the Scottish Borders. One of his songs was (i think) about the demise of hill farmimg after foot and mouth disease and no more need for tge workinv dogs....i'll need go find the cd. Might have been called 'come by'? Don't know who composed it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: GUEST,Gallus Moll Date: 13 Apr 20 - 02:39 PM Haven't found John Wright song yet - but amazing film on BBC4 19.00-20.40 Monday 13th April - The Great Mountain Sheep Gathering, 8 shepherds and their dogs collecting sheep from Scafell Pike in the Lake District, bringing them down in July to be sheared....brilliant wee film!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: Thompson Date: 13 Apr 20 - 06:12 PM Caught the last half hour or so of it. Brilliant. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: GUEST,Guest Gallus Moll Date: 14 Apr 20 - 12:10 AM A while back I saw a film of the merino sheep gathering in New Zealand...totally amazing! Something like 10,000 sheep (? ) and herders were helicoptered to the mountaintops ..I seem to recall the helicopters did some of the herding but I might have made that up. As for the John Wright song about the collie, first i have to find my cds - not sure if it is on cd, maybe I only heard it live in concert? Think it was about a shepherd no longer needing dog due to (would it have been foot and mouth? Do sheep get that? Or other ecconomic decline..) it is so sad - and John had worked as a shepherd, so it was very personal..... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: GUEST,Gallus Moll Date: 15 Apr 20 - 07:44 AM Here's the correct info (! Amazing how one's memory modifies facts.. well.mine did!) The song Come By was composed by Steve Knightley after a conversation with John Wright (who was a shepherd in the Scottish Borders, and previously in N England) It was based on what happened after the Chernobyl disaster, the clouds of contamination affected the Borders so badly that livestock and wild deer were not allowed to be eaten - this went on for many years, and I believe there are still areas that react to geiger counter? I am not certain, but assume much of the domestic stock would have been culled? Hence no work for shepherds or their collies? I don't recall.much publicity at the time, but I expect there would have been some governmental covering up so as not to cause panic? What year was Chernobyl? I recall it was May, must have been about 1986? Shall check. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: Gallus Moll Date: 24 Apr 20 - 04:20 PM Here's the lyrics - I've not heard the Show of Hands /Steve Knightley's group version, but the John Wright version haunts me still - wonderful, sad song. Think it is on Dangerous Times cd which can still be obtained, check the John Wright website. Come By Show of Hands My father found this land in the early sixties And he led me by the hand across the endless fields He made these hills his own Clearing every stone In the wind and the rain alone He was a farmer Our dogs would drive the flock to the higher pasture And I'd watch him choose the rocks to mend the dry stone walls The steel beneath the skin When he'd call the stragglers in His voice upon the wind Ever a farmer Come on Away Come by Lie Down In 1986 when the dark clouds gathered And the cold winds from the East Was dusted with decay On the great and on the small It settled on us all And we watched the margins fall For the farmer So where are the shearlings now To gather in the folds To count to clip and mark when there's No fleece to be sold And when a life of learning skills Out on these Western hills It barely pays the bills For a farmer Come on Away Come by Lie Down So now he sits and stares into the distance Then I watch him climb the stairs where Restless in his sleep He stretches out his hand And the dogs on his command Strong eyed still work the land With a farmer Come on Away Come by Lie down Steady That'll do. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: leeneia Date: 25 Apr 20 - 11:46 PM That's a great song, but I'm pretty sure that growly manner he sings in is bad for the voice. Don't do it. One day long ago I watched some videos about border collies. They convinced me that these dogs have a remarkable amount of energy. Each one should come with a farm or ranch. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: Gallus Moll Date: 26 Apr 20 - 12:02 PM I've not heard Steve's version of his own song, only John Wright's - and I found it so moving, particularly as he had been a shepherd in the North of England and the Scottish Borders. Such a sad loss, John's songs were always well chosen and memorably delivered! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Working Dog From: Thompson Date: 08 Sep 23 - 02:45 PM Chernobyl was at the end of April 1986; took a few days for the news to get out that a nuclear power station in Ukraine had decided to join its maker, with a strong rainy wind driving northwest across Europe. I heard about it when I got off my bicycle, wrung the rain out of my hair and went in to work, like a lot of other people. I suppose it was worse for those driving, though, with the grilles of their cars pulling the poison in the same way they now do with NO2 pollution, tyre dust, etc. The news had come in from Scandinavian weather stations, as far to the north of us as Ukraine is to the south… When I got home I went around to the nearby health food shop, where they sold me kelp tablets for all the family. After a few days a ban came in on eating mutton or lamb or goat, I think, or venison - the reason being that sheep and deer both graze right down to the soil, and eat a proportion of soil with the pasturage. Mostly in Ireland sheep are eating mountain sward, making it all the more likely for them to be nukey as the rain drove hard against the hills. |
