I'm sure quite a few Mudcatters knew Carl and his music. What a terrible loss. He was a brilliant guitarist and singer, a lovely person, and he had the rare gift of being able to make traditional songs sound fresh and arresting to any audience. Our thoughts are with his wife Miranda, and son Oliver.

Farewell to our colleague

Monday, April 6, 2020
We are sorry to say farewell to our colleague Carl Hogsden, who passed away last Thursday after a long illness.

As a key link between the Communications Team and IT, Carl provided specialist support in the major task of upgrading and future-proofing the Department website. He helped develop many new aspects of the website, and most recently was developing on-line reporting systems to simplify the administrative workload.

Carl was a very kind colleague, who always found the time to help out any members of staff who needed a hand in navigating issues around the website.

Prior to his move into the IT world Carl was a professional folk musician both as a vocalist and instrumentalist. His work was much influenced by traditional styles from his native East Sussex and beyond. Carl travelled widely with Miranda, and enjoyed recounting tales of their experiences in South America and New Zealand.

Our sympathy goes to Carl's family and friends at this very sad and difficult time.

Here's a video from Facebook that turned up in a search.

Thia is terible, awful. unexpected news. I remember Carl as a young man living in Sussex and performing with his brother, Leon. We booked Carl & Jane regularly at our club in Lewes.

Yes this is saddening news. He was indeed a quiet, kindly human being as is Jane with whom he visited Southport's Bothy regularly some 30 years back though it's ages since I saw him last. The duo toured with John Kirkpatrick's Wassail show in the '90s and there was/is a CD out there of Jane and Carl.
Sincere condolences to Carl's family and friends.

Very sad and far too young to go. I remember Carl coming to Swinton with Jane a few times. I always likened them to a young Tim Hart and Maddy Prior!

RIP Carl.

Sad news indeed. His duo partnership with Jane Threlfall was magic, but i'd not seen him since. The phrase "quiet, kindly human being" sums him up well. Condolences.
