Tonight Joe Solo did another of his 'Live from the Shed' gigs. His first one a few weeks back was a triumph - almost three hours of uplifting and moving songs. This Saturday was an absolutely fascinating and, at times, heart rending gig as he took us through the stories behind what is probably his best album, 'No Pasaran' - based on the experiences of some of those who went to fight the fascists in the Spanish Civil War

Both gigs are available on his Facebook Live from the Shed Group and if you enjoy them please support the causes he has nominated

No Pasaran (The Ballad of Joe Atkinson) written by Joe Solo (words and music)

My name is Jack Atkinson and I'm not afraid
I'll live and die by this vow that I've made
The only good fascist is a dead one they say
And Jarama here we are

When I first left Hull all them months ago
I told them I'd come not to kill but to cure
But for an 'ambulance driver' my shot's pretty sure
And Jarama here we are

There'll be no pasaran
No pasaran
No pasaran today
The fascists have come for our freedom
And we ain't gonna give it away
There'll be no pasaran here today

I told my mother, "Now mother be strong,
For the left way is right and the right way is wrong
And you can stick that on my grave when I'm gone"
For Jarama here we are

There'll be no pasaran
No pasaran
No pasaran today
The fascists have come for our freedom
And we ain't gonna give it away
There'll be no pasaran here today

The curse may be cast, and the cast may be cursed
But you armies of darkness you'd best do your worst
For to win, yeah, well you'll have to get past us first
And Jarama here we are

There'll be no pasaran
No pasaran
No pasaran today
The fascists have come for our freedom
And we ain't gonna give it away
There'll be no pasaran here today [END]

Off on a tangent, has anyone watched the documentary Nae Pasaran about the workers in the East Kilbride Rolls Royce factory who 'blacked' the repair of Hawker Hunter plane engines belonging to Chile during the overthrow and killing of Allende, instatement of Pinochet (Maggie Thatcher's pal), hellish treatment of the people of the country.
It is a great film, made by the son of one of the journalists who managed to escape the country. Worth seeking out!

Here is a 6 minute review of the movie. I understand it ia also available through various view-on-demand sites (for the cost of a pint).

When Nae Pasaran was shown at Glashow Film Festival they had the film maker and I think two of the retired engineers there for a Q&A. And at Dunoon film festival a coupld of years later the film maker came (i am so bad at remembering names! Felipe Busto?)
If is really interesting to see history that happened in your own lifetime, from the perspective of those who were involved in it!(as opposed yo the political spin put on by the UK establishment at the time).
I found the film very moving..... have seen it several times now. Highly recommend.
