I don't think SpaceX has the track record yet to be transporting humans. Some of y'all know more, though, about what is actually involved, so, y'all, whaddaya think?

Well Elon says he has more successful launches that the US based competition, & points to the level of insurance he pays on each launch, and reckons it is much less.

There are compounding factors like the value of the payload, and his charges for each launch which he brags are half the price. But, who, other than Roscosmos have any current track record on transporting humans to the ISS?

If we get clear skies, the ISS will be visible in the UK at around 21:20, followed by Space-X at 21:50 tonight. Look west, just to the right of the moon, they will be travelling to overhead.

Tornado warnings were mentioned and the announcer is more suited for a sporting event or dog show. Tensions are rising, the countdown has begun and THEY HAVE cut to a Verizon commercial followed by Good RX and a Miralax commerial.

The President and his sidekick Pense just arrived a little late at which point Elon Musk immediately scrubbed the flight due to weather sighting of lightning in the last half hour.

Trump grumbled about a **** waste of time and may drag this out with an Investigation that is rumored to be called Elon Gate.

To what profession do they belong, Mrrzy? They're transport vehicle operators--highly trained and skilled, I'll wager--but transport vehicle operators all the same. Transport vehicle operator is an occupation, not a profession, as it lacks ethics and has no social sanction for its own control over admission to the occupation. (It does have operating principles: stay alive and deliver the passengers and cargo. These go to ensuring returns for the shareholders.)

What an incredible waste of time, money and human resources. We don't have the will or moral decency to even attempt to save our own planet but we're eager to spread our garbage into the rest of the universe so rich guys can cross another item off their "bucket list" with a ride into outer space.

Mrrzy wrote: "We have to be able to survive our planet."

It would be far more realistic to put all that time, effort and treasure into restoring and preserving our own planet rather than try to build an inhabitable environment somewhere out in space for billions of people and do it before we destroy the earth. Imagine the technology that could develop from the former endeavor, plus, and far more importantly, succeeding generations would actually have a place to live. But then it would be difficult and space travel sounds far more glamorous and intriguing than saving the earth.

In case you have not heard, one big meteor strike wiped out the dinosaurs. We need to spread out to ensure our continued existence. We also need to clean up this litter box we live on.

Tesla's mission statement is to accelerate the move away from fossil fuels in vehicles. And colonise Mars. One out of two ain't bad.

He gives and the takes away. He ain't perfect, but he ain't stoopid.

'sides - he will be dead before there is a colony** on Mars.

Tesla's mission is to make ginormous gobs of money for Elon, full stop. No, he ain't stoopid, which makes him all the more dangerous - kinda like a Trump with a brain. If he thought he could make more money by pushing fossil fuels instead of electric cars, he'd do it in a New York minute.

I beg to differ. Like I said he ain't all bad.
His brother Kimbal, and erstwhile busness partner, is something of an entrepreneur also with an environmental edge to him. And there's a business minded sister. And a entrepreneurial eco-cousin.

Just be thankful - being born in SA - he can't be president! Mind you, would that stop him trying? Look out Canada!

Yes we'll just tidy up the litter box a bit then toddle off to Mars to build an artificial biosphere for billionaires and their useless offspring so they can reseed the Universe while the riff raff stays behind treading water. Jolly good plan.

I am a bit bemused at the negative comments from several above who seem to view any venture by a billionaire entrepreneur as merely self-serving and wasteful.
Yes, Musk stands to make a lot of money with his projects and yes, his ego is well documented............ but... there are thousands of Tesla vehicles bearing satisfied consumers happily ticking off non-polluting miles... and more to come. Tesla has developed a new type of rechargeable battery that, if it proves successful, could make putting up with Musk's ego a minor inconvenience.
In the same way, they are developing a better way to put solar panels on buildings and designing underground transit systems. You don't do these projects overnight and not without setbacks and LOTS of money. NASA did choose Tesla over Boeing for this rocket, and LO! they have a cheaper way to send payloads AND now passengers to the ISS..... and land the 1st stage on a barge in the ocean for re-use!
The argument that "we need to solve problems down here and 'clean up the planet' before committing billions to space" is a common one ... but who really believes that NOT going to space will actually get money diverted to all those other nice goals? It just don't work that way. As was said above, the space program over the last 50-60 years has resulted in more useful stuff than I can type here... including the GPS that a lot of you carry around in your pockets!

The major problems confronting humans right now are... too MANY humans and political upheavals partially fueled *BY* too many humans. Maybe if an Elon Musk would figure out a gentle and fair method of population control, we could concentrate on stopping Trumps, Bolsonaros, Putins, Erdogans and Dutertes from making life miserable for so many.....maybe...

I shake my head sadly at the simplistic way so many evaluate the complex problems of humans fouling their own nest. Making fun of idiots like flat-earthers is one thing, but when technology is actually working, it is silly to act as though a few billion constitutes waste.
Here's just one article that I doubt anyone else here has seen..

Bill, I have no problem with Musk (except for when I put on too much of it) seriously though, I don't see the logic of going to space in order to develop technology to save us from climate change when we should act like adults and make the commitment to cut out all the middlemen and develop it for it's own sake, from every thing I've read and seen time is of the essence. Have we got time to build a dome on Mars for people who can afford to live in it and use the resulting technolgy to "clean out the litter box". It seems like our priorities are terribly skewed. I'm sure I won't leave my grandson the price of a ticket. I know saving this planet is a daunting task but if we don't we really don't deserve to survive as z species. Now back to work.
