Subject: RIP Robin Roberts
From: Thomas Stern
Date: 27 May 20 - 11:03 PM

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of ROBIN ROBERTS (1928-2020)
(Robin Howard in her theatre work), age 92 following a fall.

Active on the folk scene in the 1950's and 60's. She worked
with Alan Lomax on the COLUMBIA WORLD LIBRARY OF FOLK AND PRIMITIVE
MUSIC series, major work on the disc for IRELAND. Also produced
a number of recordings for TRADITION (NY). Worked in theatre,
and combined the folk music and theatre muses in some stage
work and as participant in the REVELS (Cambridge, MA).

I will post a resource document listing her recordings, film,
and theatre work.

Does anyone know if she appeared on the OSCAR BRAND WORLD OF
FOLK MUSIC transcriptions? These 15 minute programs sponsored by the Social Security Administration were available to radio stations as 12-inch LP format transcriptions. Full details if possible,
but any information appreciated. Thanks!

Heartfelt condolences to family and friends.
Thomas.

Robin Roberts on folk singing in Ireland, and on Alan Lomax:

She also had "connections" with Liam Clancy, I think - an extremely attractive lady
There are recordings of her on the Lomax site

Jim
Looking at Liam Clancy's autobiography, there is no suggestion of a "connection" (to use your quaint term!) with Robin Roberts. She was, however, romantically involved with his brother Paddy. Are you confusing her with Diane Hamilton?

Possibly Derek - I quite often do
Which one was related to the millionaire Dynasty and financed the early folk-music trips - can't remember their name either ?

I have an album, Olympic 6173, Banjo Music of the Southern Appalachians, Eric Darling – Banjo, sung by The Kossoy Sisters, Robin Roberts. In fact, only two of the songs are sung by Roberts: Hard and it's Hard, and Little Birdie. Olympic was evidently part of the Everest Record Group, which in turn was in the Tradition family.

A life long exponent of folk music! You can find examples on the Internet. I have included her in the "In Memoriam" thread and send my condolences to all those who know and love her.

Where would Thomas's list of recordings appear on Mudcat? In the links section? (I realise I may be jumping the gun in looking for it.)

There are a some remembrances on the BALLAD LIST.

I will post the resource document, hopefully next week.

Thomas.

Did she make an lp of her own? I think I used to have a recording of Robin Roberts. I didn't know she was still alive until she died, if you know what I mean. So often we only learn about people with significant achievements until they are no longer with us.

No mention of the husband's identity in the obit. I may be wrong, or he may be wrong, but Bill Leader mentioned that a Lomax associate, called 'Robin' he thought, married John Gibbon, a guitarist who took lessons from Rev Gary Davis and cut a 10" LP, John Gibbon's Disc (Topic 10T11) in the late fifties, one of Bill's early engineering jobs. Does anyone know? These are arcane waters, I'm aware. I'm researching Gibbon for a book I'm writing about Bill. Indeed, it's turned into a series of books, and Vol. 1 is in my publisher's hands now. Gibbon became a distinguished professor of psychology who specialised in time in animal and human cognition ("time is everything" he was fond of saying), circadian rhythms and "temporal discrimination".

I thought I had a funny handle, but I notice I just appear as 'GUEST' (it's been a while since I contributed to Mudcat). My name is Mike Butler, and I can be contacted at wildchild.butler@gmail.com, if anyone is interested in reading about Bill Leader, or perhaps wants to tell me something about Bill.
