Subject: Mudcat online singaround?
From: GUEST,Chris Lamb
Date: 05 Jun 20 - 06:01 AM

Link posted here Mondays for the week's Mudcat Worldwide Song Circle.
Singing starts Mondays at 8 PM London time. That's Noon here in California, 3 PM at Mudcat Central in Pennsylvania, and early Tuesday morning in Sydney. Doors open half an hour earlier.

Back in March (2020), on a thread that's now closed, Joe Offer said: "And I think it would be really nice if we could have a weekly Mudcat singaround online."
Was this suggestion taken up? It would be great to put a face and a voice to some of the regular Mudcatters and to hear them sing, on Zoom, perhaps. I'd love to hear Jim Carroll sing again, for example, as I haven't heard him or Pat McKenzie sing since Critics Group days.

The many singarounds that have sprung up since lockdown started have brought together some fine singers from across the seas and enabled us to hear those we would never have been able to listen to in normal times.
Can the Mudcat community respond to this opportunity?

Okey-dokey. I think we have a minyan. Well, it's supposed to be 10 adult, circumcised males, but we'll make do with what we've got.

Monday at 8 PM London time. That's Noon here in California, 3 PM at Mudcat Central in Pennsylvania, and 5 AM in Sydney.

I'll host. I'll post the link to the Zoom session here in this thread just one hour before we begin, and I'll open up half an hour early at 7:30 PM for cocktails and conversation. There will be a waiting room, and I reserve the right to reject people I don't recognize - so please use your Mudcat names. Sorry.

This should be fun!

When you enter Zoom, you will usually be give the opportunity to give the name you want to be known by for the session. If you have not used Zoom since June 1, you may be asked to update to the new, encrypted Version 5 of Zoom. It seems to be quite stable, so just OK the download and there you go - good reason to show up early, though.

I'm looking forward to this.

I will post the link in this thread Monday, an hour before the gathering. I will also send links by personal message Sunday, to members who post in this thread. If you've pasted anything above, you'll get a pm from me Sunday. Sorry, I can't send personal messages to Guests, so you'll have to look here Monday for the link.
I will change the meeting ID every week for security purposes.
I can't handle anything that comes in Monday, because I'm teaching a Class Mondays and have just half an hour free after the class.
Looking forward to seeing you Monday.
Joe

Yes that’s right Amergin, for security reasons the new link is only put up about an hour before the start each week, so less likely to attract gatecrashers.

I think it’s even better than the old HearMe (which I remember very fondly) because we can see each other too!
Joe Offer has of course gone another step further and often searches for and adds info and words for the song being sung, in the chat box in real time... which sets this Mudcat Singaround apart from all others I’ve been involved with.

Mudcat is once again in the vanguard of new ideas!
(I wonder whether the wonderful Max might join us one week?!)

This thread is getting pretty long, but I think I'd like to preserve it as the go-to place for the singaround.
Feel free to post whatever you like here (especially lyrics to songs you have sung or will sing), but I'll probably move most messages over two weeks old to our overflow thread (click).

I'm having the best time at this Monday singaround. My big black dog Madeleine loves it, too, and she often comes into my office to listen while we're singing.

If there are songs posted here, they will eventually be moved to a thread for that particular song. So, free to post lyrics here, and I'll move them in good time.
We don't currently have a way of correcting the Digital Tradition Folk Song Database (DT), and maybe it's a good idea to leave it as Dick Greenhaus left it when he died.
I am gradually trying to ensure that there is a thread to cover every song or family of songs in the DT. The best place to look for correct lyrics is in the threads, not in the DT. If the lyrics in a thread have proper title, songwriter, and source information, you can be reasonably sure they're correct. If the title is allcaps and bold and large, that means it has been reviewed for correctness.

-Joe-

I will use this thread as the permanent notification thread for the singaround. As messages get out of date, I'll move them to the overflow thread or to song threads.

re Painted Veil, I believe the phrase w\s first used in a sonnet Lift Not The Painted Veil by Percy Bysshe Shelley. It was later used as a book title by Somerset Maugham, and more recently as a film title. Not sure where Iain heard / read it - I'll ask him!

From an earlier post by Joe Offer:
8 PM London time. That's noon here in California, and 3 PM in New York, and early Tuesday in Australia and New Zealand. I had no idea what time it starts in Israel (Shlomo says it's 10 PM), but we have singers from there, too.
Come join us! We open doors half an hour before the scheduled time, sing for about 5 hours, and then chat until people are done chatting. All in all, it's a wonderful time. Some people just listen - that's OK, too. Hope you can come.
If you'd like to be included on the email list, contact me, joe@mudcat.org

For security reasons, we change the URL/address of the singaround every week, and post the URL here in this thread for only a short time.

Happy New Year, Everyone!
Our next Mudcat Worldwide Singaround is Monday, January 4. It starts at 8 PM London time, 3 PM in New York, and noon in Los Angeles. People in the rest of the world are smart and can figure out the time for themselves, but I do know that we're on Tuesday morning in Australia and New Zealand.
Doors open for cocktails and conversation half an hour before, and we start singing on the hour. We sing for about 5 hours, giving everyone the chance to sing two songs.
Hope you can join us.
I emailed the invitation just now, and I'll post it here a couple of hours before the singaround. I change the link every week to try to avoid evil zoombombers.
-Joe-

Wendy, if the email address is correct on your Mudcat registration, you should be on the email list and should have received an email.

for people who didn't get an email, you can join the list by emailing joe@mudcat.org

Here's our contribution. For some reason Zoom wouldn't let me paste.

Bugeilio’r Gwenyth Gwyn (Watching the White Wheat)?Original Welsh words by Wil Hopcyn (1700-1741) ?English translation by David Llewellyn (2002).??Mi sydd fachgen ieuanc ffol
Yn myw yn ol fy ffansi
Myfi’n bugeilio’r gwenith gwyn
Ac arall yn ei fedi
And what a simple fool am I
Who loves at fancy’s pleasure
For whilst I tend the ripening wheat
Another reaps the treasure

Though they may lock you dungeon deep
Our love to die aborning
Upon a leaf, blood’s true words speak
Your deepest feelings for me
But I can’t stay, my heart would break
For you must take another
Though stars will fall, our love may shine? As endless time discovers

Then in a dream, your vows set free
And to your side I hurry
But from a heart, so torn in two
In this life you’ll not tarry
And now I lose for a second time
To He whose love is greater
For whilst I tend the ripening wheat
Another reaps the treasure

Mi sydd fachgen ieuanc ffol
Yn myw yn ol fy ffansi
Myfi’n bugeilio’r gwenith gwyn
Ac arall yn ei fedi

Follwed by??Little Collier

Yr wyf i little collier, yn gweithio underground,

Hi, Everyone -
Please note that because the US and UK change to Daylight Savings time on different dates, our Singaround for the next two weeks, March 15 and 22, will begin at 7 PM London time. In the US, starting times will be the usual Noon in Los Angeles and 3 PM in New York. Those of you in the rest of the world will have to figure out the starting time on your own, because you're less likely to confuse it than I would be.
We open the doors and chit-chat for half an hour before starting time, and then we sing for about 5 hours and then have an online party.

I'll post a link here about an hour before we open our doors on Monday. If you want advance notice, email me to get on the weekly email notice list. I'm sending out this week's email right now.

Another wonderful gathering. We had something over 50 participants. That keeps us singing for FIVE hours, going twice around the circle. I think we can sustain this as long as we have twenty participants. After that, I think we should talk. But for me, every Monday has been wonderful since we began.....and then I have to take a serious nap right afterwards.

Come one, come all! The announcement for the April 5 Singaround just went out by email. If you'd like to be added to the list or if you didn't get your announcement, email me, joe@mudcat.org

It happens every Monday and goes for about five hours. Doors open half an hour early.
Singing begins at Noon in Los Angeles, 3 PM in New York, and 8 PM in London. Hope you can come.

I've been asked to remind people to keep conversation and spoken song introductions to a minimum during the singing portion of our gathering - but we do appreciate it if you give us the name of the song before you sing, and a brief explanation is always welcome. Our schedule makes some people be up at ungodly hours, and they've come to sing, not talk. We stay open for conversation afterwards for as long as people want to stay.
In general, we have a five-minute time limit per person. Don't fill obliged to fill up the whole five minutes.
In short: Don't talk Too Much!!

As requested, here are the words of the parody I sang this evening.

Note: This is written by someone in the UK, and verse 4 (which I skipped this evening) refers to a now-infamous incident in the spring of 2020 during the UK's first lockdown, when Prime Minister Boris Johnson's chief adviser Dominic Cummings violated the rules he had helped to write – by driving himself and his family ~250 miles from London to Cumbria, after discovering he and his wife had clear symptoms of Covid and then about a week later drove 30 miles to scenic Barnard Castle "to test his eyesight" before returning to London (it was just a coincidence that it happened to be his wife's birthday) – and, in spite of public outrage, did not resign and was not sacked. (
More info here.)

I LOVE NOT WHERE I LIVE
A topical parody of the song 'I Live Not Where I Love'
by Colin Andrews

Come all you folks who social distance
at least two metres from your friends
Come let me tell you what I miss and
ask when will restrictions end

We're not allowed to kiss or cuddle
or give a friend a loving hug
Or even sing a song together
just in case we spread the bug

Regulations now require us
to wear a mask when in a store
To help defeat corona virus
we (must) keep our distance when outdoors

But government advice is farcical
when its adviser all the rules ignores
And takes a trip to Barnard Castle,
no apology, just a curt 'Up yours'

Around the world among all religions
folk have in their thousands died
While some leaders don't care a smidgeon
and others still the threat deny

The world has changed and life seems strange
no jet-setting to distant lands
Virtual socialising, sanitizing
and the government will wash its hands

So be aware lads be aware lasses,
if I could only have a choice
I'd fly away to safe New Zealand
far from Johnson's waffling voice
But since I'm furloughed I can't follow
my wishes or my job I'd lose
I'll stay in my pod and pray to God
for some day soon much better news

I don't know which are my best songs (if anyone wants to pmail me with advice ...?). But we also had a suggestion to sing songs about parties and celebrations, so I am hoping some singers take up that suggestion. And probably a couple of Mudcatters would be inspired to compose a ditty specifically for the occasion.

Time again to go Mudcatting! Join singers from all over the US, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, and...where else? Hear singing in English (both British and American), Irish, Scots Gaelic, Occitan, Hebrew, French, German, Breton, and… what else?

We start sing at NOON pacific daylight time, 3 PM in New York, and 8 PM in London. We sing for around five hours, depending on how many attend, and it's always wonderful. Doors open half an hour early for schmoozing and numbering the singing order. Be sure to update to the latest version of Zoom.

Through the miracle of technology, this session will be hosted by Noreen Keene (in England with Irish connections) with backup hosting from Casey Casebeer in California. And let’s have a round of applause for the wild and wooly Mudcat session assistant volunteers, without whom all would be anarchy and pandemonium. (Anarchy and pandemonium have their place, granted, but not at an event that gets through 30 to 60 singers every session!)

Joe is on vacation, and about time. He’ll be back next week.

We won't be meeting next week because we'll all be at the FSGW Getaway (Oct 8-11, 2021), so come sing with us today and every Monday except next week (come to the Getaway next week).

If you're short on time and can't wait two hours to sing, let me know in the Zoom chat and I'll squeeze you in early. The idea of the Worldwide Singaround is for Mudcatters to meet each other and share songs. I try to be as flexible as possible to accommodate everyone.

Chris - you just have to ask Joe Offer to email you the zoom link, which changes each week. Everyone who attends is welcome to sing; you are given a number when you sign in. So we take turns singing in roughly the order that we sign in to zoom. There is some juggling to accommodate late comers when the early birds have all had a turn, or to accommodate people who have to rush off. Most people do not stay for the full 4 hours plus; some leave early and some arrive late.

Pretty much anything accoustic is acceptable. Some people accompany their singing and others don't. There is a Mudcat thread you can look at which lists songs sung at past singarounds Songs from the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround

Ray Nichol send some pretty good advice for online singing sessions:

VIRTUAL SESSIONS:

The following apply to most live sessions:

• Switch your settings to have microphone and video off when joining a session.
• Check your equipment and settings before joining meetings to save time.

• Be conscious of background environments and others in the room. ?
• Computers used should be in appropriate areas, and where possible be against a neutral background. ?
• Cameras may be turned off if other distractions in the household may a disruption. ?

ETIQUETTE
• In any meeting the Host is in charge, let them deal with any questions do not butt in unless asked.

• Language must be professional and appropriate, including any family members in the background.

• Be polite and remember the other people are sitting in their own homes.

• Save non-relevant discussion for elsewhere.

• Remember that most people will know the history of songs etc, no need to tell the full story every time.

• Make use of 'Chat' to ask for information on tunes privately, or to post the information on your performance.

• Repeats are fine but remember some people may have heard the same one last time.

• Possibly keep a note of your own performances to help you plan for next time.

• Try not to practice during someone else’s performance, and mute to tune up.

• Do not post links to other sessions without permission.

• If you join a session give it your full attention, joining just to perform is very rude.

• Even if there is no time limit, don't drone on.

• Choose pieces that are of an appropriate length, don't expect a welcome back if you go on for 15 minutes.

• There is no such thing as constructive criticism on Zoom sessions. Keep it to yourself.

• If you are late for the session, you can still join but expect to be at end of list.

RULES
• Participants are expected to adhere to Club rules and maintain appropriate behaviour.

• On most sessions, No Politics or Religion, Zoom groups are very mixed everyone is entitled to their own views.

RECORDING

• Sessions should NOT to be recorded on any device unless permission is granted.
• If any members would like a recording of 'their performance only' please ask Host who may send you the video file. (if you ask, we will let you record your own performance at the Mudcat Singaround, but please keep conversation and disturbances related to recording at a minimum).

We've been doing this Mudcat Worldwide Singaround for almost 3 years now, and we're still having fun. Come join us on Zoom Mondays. We start at noon Los Angeles time, which is 3 PM in New York and 8 PM in London. Doors open about half an hour earlier.

Please remember to keep song introductions short and between-song conversations at a minimum. I got a lot of complaints last week because I let some newcomers prattle on. So, folks, quit prattling. People tend to think it's boring. And if you feel driven to give tech advice, please refrain. If you're giving advice to a singer, our tech people can't talk to them. So, HUSH!!

We rely, as always, on the skills of the volunteer co-hosts to do the zoomy part of running the session. Are you curious about how Joe’s Fuzzy Logic works in the second round? see the note below.

And don’t forget to post to Chat the title and origin of songs you sing (we guest hosts don’t have quite Joe’s well-known superpower for finding a song on line! Help us get your song info, so it appears on the list of songs and readings that Gerry posts to the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround thread every week.)

-------------------------------
JOE’S FUZZY LOGIC - how the singing order works in the second round.
-------------------------------

—The Mudcat Worldwide Singaround continues until everyone who wishes to has sung twice.

—Participants are given a number as they arrive. If you’re just listening, let the host or a co-host know, and you’ll be given the number 99, indicating to the host that you aren’t planning to sing.

—In the first round, we sing in the order of our numbers.

--There are always singers who can’t be there for the first round. This is to be expected in a large session that incorporates busy people from many time zones.

— Joe has his own system to insure that people arriving in the second round still get to sing twice.   Joe tries to avoid having anyone sing their two songs back to back. Therefore, he likes to incorporate latecomers into the queue to sing their first song soon after they arrive, and then have them sing their second song when we reach their number.

-- He accomplishes this by calling on the singers with numbers 1-10, then detouring to anyone who has only arrived in the second round and has not yet sung at all. When the late arrivals have sung their first song, he continues with singers numbered 11-20.   Then he checks once again for any additional arrivals who haven’t yet had their first song, and calls on them.   Finally, Joe continues with singers from numbers 21 on, and we sing through to the end of the queue. He may decide to let a very late arrival sing twice in a row, depending on how late the session is running.   That’s Joe’s Fuzzy Logic!

Hi, Everybody -
Three years ago, I wouldn't have believed that we would still be singing every Monday for three years, but here we are. I'm glad to be back to singing with my local friends, but it has turned out to be wonderful to have the opportunity to sing every week with people from all over the world. And the songs and singing continue to be of such high quality. I think we'll keep this going indefinitely, as long as we have songs to share - and as long as I can depend on Dave Kidman and Casey Casebeer to fill in for me when I get the Wanderlust.

Come join us every Monday for 4 hours of singing on Zoom at the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround. We start singing at noon Los Angeles time, which is 3 PM in New York and 8 PM in London. Singers in other time zones are required to do their own calculations. Doors open half an hour before the singing. Hope you can come.

Alternate blurb: Come one, come all to Monday's Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom. 8 PM in London, 3 PM New York, and Noon in Los Angeles.
We open half an hour early for cocktails and conversation, sing twice round the circle for about 5 hours, and then party afterwards until we're done.

Do I have a Mudcat name? If so, what is it? If not, how do I get one?

I swear I’m legit; my Dad, Charles Polacheck, was an Almanac Singer in his youth.

David Polacheck, I don't think you need to email Joe Offer to register for membership on Mudcat; I think you can still do that directly from the Mudcat website by clicking on "membership" and submitting your email addy and a user name. And it is a good idea to register with this site. But you also don't need to be a Mudcat member to participate in Monday zoom singarounds. To be on the email list to receive the codes weekly, you DO have to email Joe Offer. But Joe is travelling at the moment and Gerry Myerson sent out the zoom code this week. You could get this week's code from someone you know who is a regular participant.
Incorrect on three counts, Felipa. You do have to register through Joe Offer to become a Mudcat member, and Joe is back home. And he has been working on registrations while traveling.

Hi, Felipa - people DO need to contact me to become a member. I'm still processing memberships while I'm on my Great American Road Trip. I hope I'm still being pretty efficient with that.

No Mudcat Singaround on December 25 and January 1. We'll be back January 8.
As the year comes to an end and we've completed 3-1/2 years of the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround, I'd like to thank all the people who help so much to keep this thing going. It's amazing what they do.

David Kidman
Casey Casebeer
Gerry Myerson
Monique
Arlene Immerman
Gayle Wade
Melissa Marosy
Noreen Keene
Dawn Berg

There are several others who help out now and then, but I've tried to list the ones who help out regularly. I thank them all, and I thank everyone who makes this weekly gathering so much fun. It's been such a pleasure to sing with so many Mudcatters online. It's not a perfect way of communication, but it's pretty darn good.

Hi, Everybody - I hope you can sing with us on Zoom on Monday January 22. Singing starts at noon Los Angeles time, which is 3 PM in New York and 8 PM in London. We sing for 4-5 hours, and always have a good time.

There's been a little discussion lately about our policy on between-song conversation and length of performances, and the like. Different singarounds do things differently. We like to emphasize music and not conversation, and we like to keep the session moving along. We have 25-35 singers every week, and the session can get tedious if there's too much conversation. So please help to keep the session moving along - without being rushed. In general, each person's turn is one song or recitation, plus a brief introduction - limited to five minutes but hopefully shorter. But if a ballad or recitation goes a minute or two overtime, I don't think everybody's going to mind.

And sorry, but we really don't want participants giving technical instructions to participants. That's what we have cohosts for.
I don't want to get all rulesy about this, but the idea is that we want to keep the session moving along and not get bogged down by conversation. Thanks.

-Joe-
