Subject: RE: Obit: Vera Lynn (1917-2020) From: Bonzo3legs Date: 18 Jun 20 - 01:30 PM What a woman indeed and what a lot she did for our country’s morale through dark days. What a generation they were, and how lucky we are as a country to have had them. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Vera Lynn (1917-2020) From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 18 Jun 20 - 12:38 PM In the 50s/60s we had one of her old records but I can't find it on line. It showed her singing in uniform with a background of soldiers - her image had been laid over a picture of soldiers, perhaps it was a special cover for Australia. It was a favourite RIP |
Subject: RE: Obit: Vera Lynn (1917-2020) From: Bob Hitchcock Date: 18 Jun 20 - 11:07 AM As a teenager in Sussex I worked part time at the local supermarket. Vera Lynn would come there to shop with her husband quite often, she always lit the place up and chatted with everyone. I shall never forget those moments, and the songs of course. R.I.P. Dame Vera. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Vera Lynn (1917-2020) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 Jun 20 - 10:38 AM We played and sang the songs live at our street 6ft-apart gathering on that Friday of the big VE Day celebrations, but chose to do it earlier than the suggested 9pm to allow local kids to join in. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Vera Lynn (1917-2020) From: Neil D Date: 18 Jun 20 - 08:59 AM I'm not of that time, not many around now who were, but I am a sucker for WWII movies and programs. Every time I hear "We'll Meet Again" I choke up and get teary eyed. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Vera Lynn (1917-2020) From: Senoufou Date: 18 Jun 20 - 07:35 AM An absolute icon for us Brits. She seemed to epitomise the 'Dunkirk spirit' and kept up morale during dark times. During the recent VE Day celebrations (socially-distanced of course) we had a street party and our neighbour played a CD of all Vera's well-known songs. What a long life - 103 years! She must have seen so many changes. RIP Vera, we won't forget you. Perhaps 'We'll meet again'! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Vera Lynn (1917-2020) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 Jun 20 - 07:34 AM A wonderful voice and an amazing life: and so glad she lived to see and contribute to the 75th anniversary commemoration of VE Day, though she was a heroine to those who served in the Far East, as did my father-in-law. (She was awarded the Burma Star in 1985) My friends and I had been playing some of her songs in the last few weeks: White Cliffs of Dover, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, and, of course, We'll Meet Again. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Vera Lynn (1917-2020) From: r.padgett Date: 18 Jun 20 - 07:23 AM She was more than a singer of course to us Brits ~ she was the personification of the British spirit ~ loved by all the troops and all people in Britain during the War ~ as a youngster she was in the right place at the right time and sang the tear jerkers that people could identify with and kept morale high Some one of the people that the nation could identify with totally Only other could have been Gracie Fields of course God bless Vera Lynn! |
