Dave, in the US we had a cult called XIVM, commonly used to describe the personality cult of imprisoned racketeer and sex offender Keith Raniere.
Warning: branding women with his initials on their 'hoo haw' was a common practice.

While I have posted over a hundred times how as a hypnotist I found how any person of any education or wealth is extremely vulnerable to cult manipulation, I will say it again and ask that you give the documentary 'The Vow' a view.

Mormons did it, Scientology did it and Keith almost did it too.

I have been delving into the issue of cults since I was 20. Trumpism is a cult and the Trumpist is the fundamental cult member.
It is traumatic to wake up and realize you were the jackass for a cult and decide to leave. Most people will not have the strength.

That is why the 9 prime time Televised investigations about the insurrection has actually persuaded more people to believe Trump.
It went up 4 percent. The stolen secrets at Mara Lago probably had a role in this mess.

Trumps folks had already thought of that response and put an order in place prohibiting the National Guard from being called to the Capitol. Another sign of the premeditation of the assault on the Capitol.

This is a thread about Trump and his hacks, it's not about a comparison between US presidents and what an Englishman living in Ireland thinks about them. That would be a different, probably very short thread.

Trump Responds to Jan. 6 Committee Subpoena
On Oct. 13, the House select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol publicly voted to issue a subpoena to former President Trump seeking information about his involvement in the insurrection.

In response to the subpoena, Trump issued a letter to select committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) calling committee members “highly partisan political Hacks and Thugs whose sole function is to destroy the lives of many hard-working American Patriots, whose records in life have been unblemished until this point of attempted ruination” and called Congress’s Jan. 6 investigation a “Charade and Witch Hunt.” Trump then urged Thompson and other committee members to examine the “massive Election Fraud” that Trump insists took place during the 2020 presidential election.

Trump also defended his actions leading up to and during the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, which were a point of scrutiny at the Jan. 6 select committee hearing on Oct. 13. Trump claimed that the committee “willfully ignored” that he allegedly recommended and authorized thousands of troops to be deployed to the Capitol in the days before Jan. 6 because he “knew, just based on instinct and what [he] was hearing, that the crowd coming to listen to [his] speech, and various others, would be a very big one, far bigger than anyone thought possible.” He then blamed Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) for the hours-long delay in the deployment of the National Guard to the Capitol during the Jan. 6 attack, arguing that he “did [his] job long ahead schedule” and that the “troops were ready to go.”

In closing, Trump lauded the “great American Patriots” who participated in the attack on the Capitol, and said that they “have had their lives ruined” by the committee.

Follow the link and you can see his entire 14-page diatribe called a letter.

Unless you are a narcicist, in a polarized America it feels like
"WE ARE ALL OUTSIDERS! in one way or another.

Manufactured hate in the Alex Jones sphere concentrates pre existing fears and the feelings of betrayal in the poor folks who sacrifice for the American dream with time effort and money but end up with nothing. Lieing for profit works. PT Barnum said a sucker is born every minute. The real suckers don't want to identify as suckers and sometimes double down. They are already angry so why not double down with violence.
Lies about;
Pizza Gate, Sandy Hook, Hillary murders, the big lie...kitty litter, yet the truth is called fake news.
Taking advantage of the suckers who have been had is easy - there is a mob waiting for orders, this time from Trump. In 1930 it was someone else.

Our Republican politicians have grown up with examples of winning elections they lost as in the case of George W Bush.
Mitch McConnel denied Garland a Supreme Court seat because an election was a year away but installed a Republican Justice 2 weeks before an election. Lieing and fighting have been a successful formula for them so I'm not surprised at the lock-step marching to Trump's premeditated tune.

Biden is participating in defending Ukraine from Trump's friend Putin. It costs money. Trump was toying with Zelinskyy while trying to trap Hunter Biden in a campaign strategy to use against Joe, and in the process essentially telegraphed to Putin that he could do what he wanted as far as Ukraine was concerned. Take the entire nation.

Omniscience is hard to come by, whoever you choose.

Trump is of two minds regarding testifying. He wants to stone wall and he wants a stage to lie. He probably thinks if the big lie loses steam, a bigger lie should do the trick.

I think online viewing will come from various sites. The News Hour is a good starting point, they usually stream hearings from the PBS site.

Trump loves Putin. If Trump were to catastrophically be reelected, he would throw Zelinskyy and Ukraine under the bus. Goodbye weapons and support.

The difference between Trump and Biden is obvious. Unfortunately McConnell spent a lot of time putting judges in office so a number of those judges are leaving Trump era policies in place after states sue to prevent Biden removing the cruel policies that Trump and his troll Stephen Miller put in effect.

If you're a subscriber, or you haven't exhausted your four free The Atlantic articles a month, here is an article being discussed by the talking heads tonight: THE INEVITABLE INDICTMENT OF DONALD TRUMP
It’s clear to me that Merrick Garland will bring charges against Donald Trump. It’s just a matter of when.

By Franklin Foer

As an appellate judge, Merrick Garland was known for constructing narrow decisions that achieved consensus without creating extraneous controversy. As a government attorney, he was known for his zealous adherence to the letter of the law. As a person, he is a smaller-than-life figure, a dry conversationalist, studious listener, something close to the opposite of a raconteur. As a driver, his friends say, he is maddeningly slow and almost comically fastidious.

And as the nation’s chief law-enforcement officer, he is a hyper-prudential institutionalist who would like nothing more than to restore—quietly and deliberately—the Justice Department’s reputation for probity, process, and apolitical dispassion. Which is why it is so difficult for me to imagine him delighting in the choice he now faces: whether to become the first attorney general in American history to indict a former president.

I listen to a Sunday morning gardening show on a local AM radio station that normally has the hot-head conservative and/or religious radio folks, interspersed with wealth advisors who want you to send them your money.

The news on the hour frequently plays clips of Trump, who just makes it up as he goes along. During a three-hour program I'll hear several of those pieces of BS and that's plenty for the week.

The best thing is to keep on reading about her. Be informed. She is at the head of a coalition, not the absolute leader. She is rowing back all the time on her previous extremist views. She will limit but not ban abortion, for example. She will not now try to take Italy out of the common currency. She is opposed to Putin and his depredations and has said so quite vehemently. She is saying a lot of things that her new political allies don't like her saying. Remember that almost all Italian administrations are short-lived.

Of course, a lot of this is talk and we needn't feel fooled. By her fruits shall we know her (we have no option, frankly). As for your duck, remember that there are many species thereof.

The trouble is, you really have nothing to say. Do your homework. Read about her history. Read about the complex and convoluted history of the hard right in Italy since the war. Sure she is not a nice lady. I wish she would just evaporate. But try to be accurate and truthful about her via going to the trouble of properly FINDING OUT. And try, for a change, to see her in a modern context instead of rattling on about Mussolini all the time. Ms Meloni would rather you stopped the rattling on. And that is the one tiny, tiny, teensy thing, the only thing in the whole world, that I agree with her about.

And when have I said I think she'll set aside the divisive stuff, Maggie? Do you say these things because you want me to be even worse than you already think I am? I've said several times that she opposes same-sex marriage, abortion, immigration and anything to do with LGBT. That's all anathema to me, as I think should be clear from my posts down the years.   I've reiterated more than once that there is nothing at all to commend her. I've said that her election was very unfortunate. I HAVE said that she is not a direct political descendant of Mussolini, much as you see that as inconvenient. I HAVE said that, despite her far-right predilections, she will have to work within the context of the tenets of the European Union, which means she has to abide by democracy, a fair justice system and the rule of law. So far, she has not made any move that suggests she wants Italy out of the EU (there are good reasons for that which I won't go into), and she does not want Italy to leave the euro (which is a change of mind). I did not point to that article because I agreed with everything in it. I pointed to it because I thought it had an interesting take on her political positioning. And comparing her with the most dangerous man on the planet (possibly with the exception of Putin) is hardly taking a softer view, is it? There are plenty of things in these threads you could be shaking your head at. I suggest that stuff I haven't said shouldn't be one of them.

I shake my head at the idea that you think she is going to set aside all of the divisive stuff she said in past years and operate more rationally now. She said what she thought people needed to hear to elect her, but I doubt she has changed her opinion on any of those issues. Already you see her aligning herself with Trump. Trump who admires dictators. The GOP doesn't care a jot about what Trump thinks as long as he lets them undercut the government and Democracy.

In a churlish mood I am keeping my fingers crossed that Hurricane Ian manages to do some damage to Trump properties (his and the kids), even if it is out of the direct path. It's the least he deserves.

In today's Guardian. Some slightly more nuanced and subtle thinking on Meloni than we've seen from some in this thread:

Italy’s Giorgia Meloni is no Mussolini – but she may be a Trump
[Lorenzo Marsili]

Hahah. The headline is provocative enough, but it's definitely an article worth a read. Have a google. Trying to make a link gets my knickers in a twist.

As I keep saying, she has to work within today's European context, which the old-time fascists didn't have to do. My initial feeling, looking at her activity over the last ten years or so, is that she could be a much cannier operator than we think (and certainly cannier then Trump). There is still nothing to like, I emphasise.
