Trump is a symptom of a really broken GOP that started down this path with the Tea Party folks. I was listening to an interview yesterday that described how Trump took that broken party, and not knowing how political things usually work, simply made his own "deals" with the religious right to do things other presidential candidates would never say out loud. He said he'd pass supreme court justices to eliminate Roe V. Wade. The book has to do with how "The GOP Lost their party and got everything they wanted."

Don't be afraid to credit Fresh Air with Terry Gross. She is an American treasure. She typically has a preternatural gift of interviewing people who know what they are talking about ahead of such magazines as "60 Minutes". She is fearless, inquisitive, and inquisitively fearless. She deserves her own thread.

But on to the snooze:

I read in today's paper that Representative Don Young, longest serving Rep. at this time, has aligned himself with our senior Senator Lisa Murkowski to slam the recent RNC statement that the Jan 06 insurrection was "legitimate political discourse." 2 out of our national delegation still have a sense of smell.

I never considered ol' Don good for much except as a milepost in time. But if he has not redeemed himself for a mis-spent career he has at least done the right thing. I also owe his campaign a thank-you for a timely donation of whiteout at a critical time during the Alaska State Fair, but that's another story.

I love Terry's interviews - I just didn't remember which interviewer I'd been listening to. Here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area we have Krys Boyd, who is as close to Terry in her interview style as anyone I know. And I hear both of them most days.

National Archives asks Justice Dept. to investigate Trump’s handling of White House records
The request came amid revelations that officials recovered 15 boxes of materials from the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence that weren’t handed back to the government as they should have been

It would be sublime if a group of archivists and librarians were the ones to actually take down Trump.

The National Archives and Records Administration has asked the Justice Department to examine Donald Trump’s handling of White House records, sparking discussions among federal law enforcement officials about whether they should investigate the former president for a possible crime, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The referral from the National Archives came amid recent revelations that officials recovered 15 boxes of materials from the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida that were not handed back in to the government as they should have been, and that Trump had turned over other White House records that had been torn up. Archives officials suspected Trump had possibly violated laws concerning the handling of government documents — including those that might be considered classified — and reached out to the Justice Department, the people familiar with the matter said.

Anything above a 3% dna match for Neanderthal would be record breaking. I usually frown on eugenics but she may be a throw back worthy of being thrown out of the gene pool. She is not good natured.

Politics in the Age of Trump. Republicans
‘Disgusting’: Republican Senate hopeful condemned over ‘showdown’ TV ad

Jim Lamon’s ad depicts ‘shootout’ with Democrats including Mark Kelly, senator whose wife Gabby Giffords was shot in deadly attack

A Republican Senate primary candidate in Arizona has been condemned for a “disgusting” campaign ad in which he shoots at lookalike actors portraying Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and the incumbent Arizona senator Mark Kelly.

Jim Lamon, an energy executive, shared the ad on Twitter, saying it would be aired at this year’s Super Bowl.

Lamon would face Kelly in a general election in the autumn should he secure the Republican nomination.

Kelly is the husband of the former Democratic congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, who was shot in the head in 2011 while greeting constituents outside of a local grocery store.

Ha! Another judge rules against the Trump clan and they have to testify.

N.Y. Attorney General Can Question Trump and 2 Children, Judge Rules
Former President Donald J. Trump and two of his children had sought to block Letitia James, the attorney general, from interviewing them under oath.
Lawyers for the Trump family had sought to prohibit Ms. James, a Democrat, from interviewing Mr. Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump. They had argued that she was politically biased against Mr. Trump and was inappropriately using her civil inquiry to aid the district attorney’s criminal investigation, which she is also participating in.

But the judge, Arthur F. Engoron, wrote that “this argument completely misses the mark.”

He ruled in favor of Ms. James’s lawyers, who had asked that the former president and the two adult children be interviewed in the next three weeks. The order also requires that the former president provide the attorney general with documents she sought in her subpoena.

You know what about this reporting will really gall The Donald? They refer to him as Mr. Trump.

There are several recent interviews with Fiona Hill, all right before the invasion started. But she hit the nail on the head - Trump has a lot of blame in Putin's deciding to make this move now. Trump made it clear to Putin that he considered Ukraine

Explaining Putin’s Decades-Long Obsession With Ukraine
We spoke with Fiona Hill, a former Trump adviser, about how the Russian leader’s view of history has led him to the brink of war.
Winston Churchill once described Russia as “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.” It’s a phrase that could equally apply to Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin’s leader, as the world awaits his next move on Ukraine.

To better understand him, we reached out to Fiona Hill, one of Washington’s foremost experts on the Russian president. Hill has served in multiple U.S. administrations as an intelligence officer and policy adviser, most recently as senior director for Europe and Russia on the National Security Council under Donald Trump.

She spoke with us about Putin’s longtime obsession with annexing Ukraine, her worries about how he’s closed himself off from outside information and his private boasts about his ability to “buy anyone” in the United States and Europe.

Fiona Hill says that Trump emboldened Putin to invade Ukraine by treating the country like a 'playground'
She said Trump's foreign policy had not been driven by concern about the US national interest, but by personal interests and impulses.

"There's no Team America for Trump," Hill said. "Not once did I see him do anything to put America first. Not once. Not for a single second."

Hill recalled Trump's praise for Russia's authoritarian leader, Vladimir Putin, as well as his disdain for NATO. She also mentioned his campaign to pressure Ukraine for manufactured dirt about Biden in the run-up to the 2020 election. The Ukraine pressure campaign saw Trump threaten to withhold military aid from the nation, which led to his first impeachment.

"All this did was say to Russia that Ukraine was a playground," Hill said, drawing a direct line to events today, as Russia has amassed a huge military force around Ukraine, prompting fears in the US and European countries that a military strike is imminent.

On a more serious note, in addition to Steve's question, is the Republican party likely to nominate Trump again or has the balance of power there switched to the saner elements? I don't know how that side of it works so any info would be appreciated.

And what are the chances of the well outdated electoral college system being replaced with one man one vote? Surely everyone can see how undemocratic it is to have some states carry more weight because they owned more slaves! Or have I got that wrong too?

During an 85-minute speech to a packed ballroom at CPAC, Trump, who contested the 2016 and 2020 elections, also gave his strongest hint yet that he will run for president in 2024. “We did it twice, and we’ll do it again,” he said. “We’re going to be doing it again a third time.”

They would pick him because he'd win! Alternatively, give me a scenario in which Candidate Trump would lose, based on what we see and know now about the state of US politics. Biden is an old man and he shows it, he screwed up big time (in the eyes of the public) over Afghanistan and he is showing weakness right now. And he's heading for gloomy lameduckery. We hear lots of grumblings about Trump's dirty dealings and his dodgy family, etc., but, as with Johnson and partygate, he is ultimately non-stick.

Donald Trump's Detention Club convenes for Putin's Ukraine invasion

Gloria Borger lets Trump have it right between the eyes.
Former President George W. Bush condemned the "unprovoked and unjustified invasion" of Ukraine, expressing solidarity with "our friend and democratic ally" against Putin's thuggery. Ditto for former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Former President Barack Obama said Russia acted "in violation of international law and basic principles of human decency."

Trump stood alone, outside, a caricature of himself (which, admittedly, is hard to imagine), calling Putin's xenophobic and dangerous actions "genius. ... Here's a guy who's very savvy. ... I know him very well."

Over the days and hours, it actually got worse. Trump's minions encouraged his geopolitical garbage and excuses to flourish. A favorite: This never would have happened during my administration.

Let's see: Well, maybe it wouldn't because you were already doing Putin's bidding. Maybe it's because you were very busy trying to destroy NATO as Putin happily watched. And could it be that you were too busy blackmailing the Ukrainian President to get dirt on Joe Biden so you could win reelection? Which, of course, you did not. Let's say that again: You did not win.

It would be comical if it weren't so pathetic to watch Trump describe recent events as the results of a rigged election. So now Trump fealty comes down to a three-legged stool: The election was rigged, the insurrection was fine and Putin is a genius. Oh, and Biden is bad. No matter what.

At some point a huge chink in the wall of lies that Trump surrounds himself with will be prized loose and not only will everyone be able to see inside his domain, that house of cards will start to fall. Sorry about all of the metaphors, but his whole life has been lived based on bad ideas and selfish behavior.

The GOP is two distinct factions - Old School Republicans who were rational people who happened to be fairly conservative, and the Tea Party loons who showed the way for the evangelical crowd. The old school folks aren't going down without a fight.

I really really really hope that Merrick Garland has something going on in his Justice Department, though I fear he has a lot of previously embedded Trump folks in there who are making things difficult for moving forward (and are probably difficult to remove under Civil Service regulations).

Will the GOP Dump Trump?
Republicans have a clear off-ramp, but it’s up to them to take it.
Donald Trump withers in darkness. He needs sunlight—media attention—to thrive. Otherwise, he reverts to his natural state: Florida-based hotelier who will direct you to the omelet station or maybe give a toast at your wedding or bar mitzvah (though the toast is likely to focus more on the 2020 election than your blessed event). As Ukraine, gas prices, and other events of actual note dominate the news cycle, there is less and less room for Trump. Add in the fact that he’s also on the utterly wrong side of one of those events—Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—and for the first time since 2015, Republicans have a relatively painless way to rid themselves of the Mango Mussolini once and for all. Will they take it?

Probably not. But they should.

Trump is clearly feeling his displacement from the media ecosystem; hence his single-spaced three-page letter to NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt about Holt’s interview with Bill Barr (part of the Bill Barr Historical Revisionism Book Tour, as I call it). Some might see the letter, which boils down to a greatest-hits collection of Trump’s usual complaints, nicknames, and lies, as a Trumpy way to correct “the record,” whatever that means in Trumpworld. But I see it as yet another desperate attempt to inject himself back into the media discourse. The problem is that Trump, like an elderly vaudevillian, has only a few tired topics in his repertoire.

Trump doesn't let self-contradiction get in his way. When informed of Putin's move on Ukraine he spoke of it as 'genius' indicating he thought it was 'smart'. He now says he didn't mean it approvingly, but that's not so clear. He is currently saying that if he was President Putin "wouldn't dare" (invade).

I think that a debate against Trump could be successful if the debater sticks to his guns and hammers out the contradictions that are inherent in Trump's self-aggrandizing arguments. Likewise that his information does'nt hold up in a factual manner, as sometimes happens in this forum.

The danger is, robo, that seventy million or more voters, the ones who voted for Trump, might not be too much impressed by the nuances of political arguments. Just one bon mot from Trump could swing it. "Make America great again," for example.

The trouble is you cannot reason with those who have made up their minds without reason. Make America Great Again in the US and Take Back Control in the UK were dog whistles to which people reacted with no thought. How do you counter such populism? Hopefully, if there is one good thing comes out of the war in Ukraine, it will show people how propagda works. Whether those who voted for Trump or Brexit will accept that they were duped by populist sound bites is another matter :-(
