There is hope that within two years the toxic nature of social media (Tik Tok, Facebook, Twitter) will be understood by most people and treated like tobacco. The gladiatorial nature of the most toxic remarks and claims of the utmost evil will still be spread but will be seen for the swill it is. BUT...
We will have a candidate, Trump. Inflation will be the steroid that inflates a revolutionary spirit. Inflation almost always precedes political revolution despite good policies and reason. Hmmm Germany comes to mind.

Well we'll see about that. Lula has been lauded by most decent democratic leaders in the last few days and I feel that that will bear fruit. He will have to deliver, but he's done it before and we need to give him a fair wind.

As for your other point, you do obsess over Trump in joke threads and just about every thread, and I am far from the only person who thinks that. As for me, I have lots of interests in politics of all shades. In recent months I've been appalled by the paralysis in the US when it comes to doing something about him, not least in the matter of the urgent need to stop him from standing again. I post more frequently about him these days because I think that he is a severe threat to all of us. Your first paragraph is incredibly patronising and is replete with the kind of hubris that is not justified by your rather limited intellect and your penchant for ill-informed comment, not to speak of your inability to express yourself in clear and simple English. In view of this, I'd advise you to take a humble pill and try to express whatever opinions you harbour in far more measured terms than you currently do.

Before a year ago you refused to believe my take on Trump cultism and its dangers Steve. You called it my Trump obsession. That you are coming around shows that you are slow to learn beyond your personal prior beliefs, but you do learn. That is more than many folks. I do not think it was me who earned the term 'the usual suspects.

I have pushed back against negativity and schoolmaster cruelty many here were subjected to. You claim you are being attacked. I do not attack you but respect you for being a survivor. Aren't we all?

We quip we all have our 'quarks'. Mine is to return to my editorial cartooning days which are now either misunderstood or dangerous because of the fake news idiocy.

In opposition to your observation, I believe that Brazil is bracing for turmoil and war brought on by the losing president. We shall see.

Anyway, back to the substantive, hopefully. Trump has seriously damaged the concept of democracy, not just in his own country but in the world in general. Bolsonaro, Johnson and Orbán have been his henchmen and we see neofascists sniffing around in Italy. The danger has far from gone away. In the UK we currently have a regime that plays fast and loose with both the law and with the ministerial code (the rules which constrain the behaviour of senior politicians). Over our shoulders we have Xi, Putin, Modi, Erdogan. The election of Trump would be the pivot point beyond which the world may become unimaginably brutal. He needs to be stopped.

For generations, the credo of the CIA was "Perception IS Reality"
Trump and the violent right have adopted and nurtured this mind-control credo for themselves. While there is new thinking in the CIA and past failures like missing the dissolution of the USSR have taught new lessons, old beliefs remain.

Rupert, Donald, and Elon celebrate their ability to divide for their own purpose, to prosper by their message and pay less tax.
I include Elon because of his wealth and his first tweet on his Twitter saying John Pelosi was in his underwear with his homosexual lover and was having a domestic quarrel. Despite deleting his tweet the echo chamber expanded the divisive lie.

My whistle blower sacrifices on this Mudpuddle consist of conservative forces here sending the FBI to my house over claims of inciting violence and the efforts of Steve and cooperative mods to delete my message. When good people go silent for whatever reason, bad things happen to good countries. Bad things are happening and the wild pendulum of events is in free fall as denialism and what aboutism lies grow.

Beware of right wing fanatics in sheep's clothing and wisdom from unearned sources.

Well I was a bit harsh there. I was thinking of the historical serial undermining by the CIA of left-wing regimes in times gone by, and admittedly that isn't going to happen under Biden. But Bolsonaro and Trump are bedfellows, and therein lies the danger if Trump returns. That danger threatens the whole planet, not only via the dismantling of democracy but also via destruction of the Amazon.

Lula In his speech this evening: President-elect Lula invited international cooperation to preserve the Amazon rainforest and said he will seek fair global trade rather than trade deals that “condemn our country to be an eternal exporter of raw materials.” [Guardian]

Let's hope that he can achieve these things.

And America (I really don't want to be provocative here...): OK, he's a leftie. But he's a leftie who has done good things and who could do more good things. Please, CIA, do not undermine him.

Slightly off-topic, but Lula has just beaten Bolsonaro by the slimmest of margins. It remains to be seen whether Bolsonaro will cry fraud and stolen election, Trump-style (they're bedfellows). Bolsonaro's son has already said as much, several days ago, in what might be called a preemptive strike...

This is actually incredibly important for the whole planet. The next 24 hours are going to be interesting.

*MLK, the Kennedy brothers, Lincoln, Jan. 6th etc.

For 25 years I have warned of the descent into pandemics and climate change and civil war that adjudicates with the gun, sword and hammer instead of laws.

We can go a long way towards making our posts self-explanatory if we express ourselves in clear, simple English and try to avoid over-clever attempts at being as obscure as possible. Language is about the art of communication, and obscurantism and strange, meandering attempts at "poetry" merely serve to pervert that. Anyway...

From the Guardian today:

"Fears are growing that Jair Bolsonaro could refuse to accept defeat in Brazil’s crunch election this Sunday after his politician son claimed Brazil’s far-right president was the victim of “the greatest electoral fraud ever seen” amid unproven allegations of foul play.

The assertion from the president’s senator son, Flávio Bolsonaro, was almost identical to language used by Donald Trump – Bolsonaro’s most prominent international backer – after he lost the 2020 US election to Joe Biden."

Looks like another potential attack on democracy coming up. We all need to wake up.

We all assume that what we say is self-explanatory but it's not.
We have to tell a better story about our nation, heritage, and principles than our divisive opponents. We have to saturate every media with a positive story than let the hateful own the internet and other media with lies. We have to fight fire with water. Lots of water.
Facts are never enough, we have to instill deeply held feelings as we tell our story.
The Democratic party is slowly catching on.
The Republican playbook is basically 'divide and conquer'.

I had a grand overview epiphany that the Republicans have had hundreds of ideas from their think tanks to dismantle the NEW DEAL. Any one or two of those ideas to turn back the clock would have worked, BUT in an embarrassment of riches, the Republicans will try all the hundreds of their kooky ideas to gain and keep power all at once. OVERKILL!

Bob Woodward has a new audio book out, and it is again scaring the bejeezus out of people.

In a taped conversation with Bob Woodward, Donald Trump boasted about US nuclear weapons development.

“I have built a weapon system that nobody’s ever had in this country before,” the then president told the veteran Washington Post reporter. “We have stuff that you haven’t even seen or heard about. We have stuff that Putin and Xi have never heard about before.”

The recording aired on CNN on Tuesday, the day Woodward published The Trump Tapes, an audio book of 20 interviews carried out as Woodward wrote three bestsellers on the Trump presidency, Fear, Rage and Peril (the last co-written with Robert Costa).

Woodward said he looked into Trump’s claim and was told by an official it was true.

“Xi [Jinping] and [Vladimir] Putin would not know about” the weapons system, Woodward said. “But why is Trump bragging about it?”

Trump’s cavalier attitude to nuclear issues has landed him in hot water elsewhere. Documents dealing with nuclear weapons policy were reportedly among classified material recovered from Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida home, by the FBI in August.

Trump bragged about new US nuclear weapons, Woodward tape shows

Maybe this is a strategic news release, intended to scare Putin into backing off in Ukraine? Not likely, but maybe something good can come from Trump's braggadocio stupidity.

Re: Lindbergh he qualified in his own time as an aviation hero and he could definitely write. He married well, his wife Anne Morrow was personality wise worth two of him, read her book as well as his. I've seen part of her recorded interviews and I believe she shared some of his racist views pre-War. I believe she may well have lived to learn about his unpublicized German family. Got to keep those good Northern European genes in the mix.

During WW2 he was not allowed to serve in combat, but he consulted for the Army Air Force in developing guidelines for extending the range of military aircraft for long water overflights, something we can all agree he knew about.

The reason we didn't hear about Lindbergh's politics in school is that he was a minor historical personage who only figures in history books because he was first to fly the Atlantic alone and nonstop.

The only reasons to mention him are that it was a big deal in 1927 and he represented American knowhow and daring.

I don't think it's worth anyone's time to tell schoolkids, "But he later admired Hitler as a national leader."

Even in a college course on the Depression, it's no more than disappointing (though possibly disillusioning) trivia.

I agree that we shouldn't make a Big Thing of this, but I think we should be very careful to get names right even if we think that the named person doesn't deserve our courtesy. But this isn't in the same league as the need to get rid of Trump, that's for sure.

You have to first know you misspelled it to correct it. Spelling and grammar are a form of manners, according to one of my favorite English professors. When we manage to get the meaning across the basic work of language has been accomplished. In most instances I try to use the correct spelling, but some words and names are so commonplace in one particular form that the common form is what is written, regardless of some idiosyncrasy of the actual spelling. You will recall your umbrage over Moseley/Mosely. Big deal (not), you knew who I was talking about.

Going through therapy for dealing with dyslexia as a kid meant having spelling rules hammered into my head. The rules don't dictate how to spell the anomalous names. Let's move on.
