I didn't know much of Lindbergh's dalliance with the 3rd Reich until I was well into adulthood, we were pretty much fed the "Lone Eagle" story in school. The man did quietly redeem himself somewhat by flying combat missions as a civilian in the Pacific Theater during the war. |

Put a dyslexic at a keyboard and you'll discover all sorts of ways of spelling words that are still understandable. (raises hand - except for the red squiggly line under many of my posts, there'd be a lot more typos coming through.) It's pretty amazing what was known during Lindberg's lifetime that was soon covered over. I never heard about his Nazi leaning views until years after I was out of school. (No squiggly lines under my spelling, though I can cut and paste Lindbergh from another post.) There's a news clip from CNN's Jake Tapper interviewing Bob Woodward in the news this morning discussing pandemic failures and other topics from when Trump was in office, but the day is young yet. Trump manages to do or say something outrageous pretty much every day these days. |

Joe Offer was taught that Charles Lindburg was a great patriot and American hero. When I introduced him to the history I was taught/learned, I became the 'other' in his mind. Lindburg was wined and dined by Hitler's leadership and offered a free mansion in Germany. Only Lindburg's wife got him to not take the bait but still he admired the Nazis big time. It is obvious that Stilly and I share the same history of which Joe has said, "I do not understand". I should not be surprised Robo knows his history too. |

He was on the air and in the popular and prestigious magazines for a long time. Plus the Catholic church was far stronger and more antisemitic prior to World War 2 and the Second Vatican Council. The US also had strong antidemocratic (populist) leaders such as Huey Long. And Democracy was doing even worse than it is now and racism more endemic. We had popular heroes such as Charles Lindbergh practically rooting for the other side. On the other hand, we did not have the unbelievable speed, spread, and flexibility of the internet and its abuse by everyone from major governments to weird nerds. |

In response to the journalist E. Jean Carroll’s claim that Donald Trump raped her in the 1990s, the then-president said in January 2019 that “she’s not my type” and that “it never happened.” That denial, of course, suggests that being Trump’s “type” governs whether he would rape that person. Carroll sued Trump for defamation, and he has reached the point where he is out of good options, at least good legal options. The former president has been ordered to sit Wednesday for a deposition (yes, that means under oath) in a defamation case that centers on his denial of Carroll’s allegation. As I’ll explain later, this is one time where pleading the Fifth Amendment won’t help him much. "The legal questions here are whether Trump, as president, was considered to be an “employee” of the government and whether he was acting within the “scope” of that employment when he said that Carroll is not his type and that he didn’t rape her." |
