Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: robomatic Date: 04 May 22 - 09:29 PM My non-legal understanding of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision by The Supremes is that they derived a right to privacy out of the 14th Amendment, and proceeded from there. Roe v. Wade is not the only decision based on the 14th Amendment. Joe Biden made some comments yesterday or today that I think accurately called our attention to the fact that other aspects of 'settled law' may become unstuck if the Alito Draft, released yesterday, becomes a majority decision. If someone with relevant Constitutional chops could comment on this I'd be very interested. It might deserve its own thread. I have also mentioned among friends that if Roe v. Wade is reversed, which I think is the correct term, it will lead to women dying while trying to force their own abortions or obtain illicit unhygienic abortions. I think this is a medium term to long term Trmp effect but is also related to the overall lowering of the bar that Trmp has introduced to this country and also the world. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Donuel Date: 03 May 22 - 04:43 PM The Supreme Court has the power to interpret the Constitution. Its rulings on cases determine the meaning of laws and acts of Congress and the president. Knowing the key decisions of the Supreme Court and the precedents they set is vital in understanding the meaning of laws, how our country has changed over time, and the direction the country is headed. However if the Court by way of minority rule loses the respect of the people it places the Constitution and Nation in grave jeopardy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Stilly River Sage Date: 22 Apr 22 - 10:48 PM One of Trump's lifetime appointed judges (who the ABA ranked as totally unqualified) blocked the CDC mask mandate. For all of the wrong reasons. How a Trump-appointed judge reignited a major debate over power in the courts Are we comfortable placing such power in the hands of individual, unelected district judges — especially in an age when the federal courts often look just as polarized as the country? On Monday, Tampa, Florida-based federal District Judge Kathryn Kimbell Mizelle threw out the mask mandate the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had imposed on all interstate transportation hubs — including commercial airports and airplanes — to suppress the spread of Covid. Mizelle’s analysis, such as it is, focused on two distinct holdings — that the CDC lacked the statutory authority to impose such a mandate (because wearing a mask is unrelated to “sanitation,” a dubious piece of statutory interpretation, to say the least) and that, in any event, the CDC had taken procedural shortcuts in adopting the mandate that also rendered it invalid. Because her decision purports to vacate the entire CDC rule, it has nationwide effect — meaning that, by Monday afternoon, most major airlines and transportation services were no longer enforcing mask requirements. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Apr 22 - 11:47 AM Yes, I've heard about that, and Rachel Maddow discussed how Putin smeared people who built a monument to Stalin's victims (accusing those caretakers of the site with being child pornographers, "the worst of the worst human beings.") Then buried them in prison and had the mass graves bulldozed. Maddow pointed out hints of that same strategy in how GOP tried to suggest that (then) Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson was "soft on child pornographers." All of this led to an interview with Jane Mayer, who wrote The Slime Machine Targeting Dozens of Biden Nominees In an escalation of partisan warfare, a little-known dark-money group is trying to thwart the President’s entire slate. Rather than attack a single candidate or nominee, the A.A.F. aims to thwart the entire Biden slate. The obstructionism, like the Republican blockade of Biden’s legislative agenda in Congress, is the end in itself. The group hosts a Web site, bidennoms.com, that displays the photographs of Administration nominees it has targeted, as though they were hunting trophies. And the A.A.F. hasn’t just undermined nominees for Cabinet and Court seats—the kinds of prominent people whose records are usually well known and well defended. It’s also gone after relatively obscure, sub-Cabinet-level political appointees, whose public profiles can be easily distorted and who have little entrenched support. The A.A.F., which is run by conservative white men, has particularly focussed on blocking women and people of color. As of last month, more than a third of the twenty-nine candidates it had publicly attacked were people of color, and nearly sixty per cent were women. A bit later in the article, we learn: The A.A.F. told the I.R.S. that its mission is to conduct nonpartisan research, but it is curious that the largest contribution by far to its parent group, C.P.I., is a million-dollar “charitable contribution” from Save America—Trump’s political-action committee. Trump reportedly raised much of the pac’s money from supporters after his 2020 defeat, and his campaign has called the group an “election defense fund.” |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: robomatic Date: 16 Mar 22 - 06:37 PM Trump doesn't let self-contradiction get in his way. Likewise that his information does'nt hold up in a factual manner, as sometimes happens in this forum. |
