New England Patriots head coach Bill Bellichick refused the Medal of Freedom from trump with an eloquent statement. Pardon my cynicism but the old coach would have lost his locker room if he'd accepted. Besides, trump has obviously cheapened the award when you consider recent recipients, lackeys Devin Nunez and Jim Jordan.

Interesting article here, copied from a live feed. I don't know how widely it is being discussed.

John Nichols writes for the Nation on how a 14th Amendment strategy could bar Trump from ever holding office again.

To imagine that Trump will fade away after January 20 requires the denial of everything Americans know about the president’s massive ego, his aversion to being seen as a loser, and his determination to avenge his defeat in the 2020 election.

Added to the Constitution after the Civil War, the 14th Amendment is a blunt instrument, which mandates in its third section: “No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who … shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

Section 5 of the amendment declares, “The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.”

This is why focusing on the 14th Amendment is relevant. As Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Eric Foner reminds us, the House and Senate House could, with a simple majority vote, censure Trump for inciting insurrection and, with the approval of a President Joe Biden, effectively bar Trump from running again for the presidency.

“This can be invoked against anyone who has ever taken an oath to support the Constitution, including the president,” Foner says of the 14th Amendment. “It’s much simpler than impeachment. It is not a judicial proceeding. It’s a political proceeding. It doesn’t involve lawyers or trials. It is simply about qualification for office. You could have one afternoon of debate and a vote.”

An article regarding section 3 of the 14th amendment by Bruce Ackerman also appeared in the Washington Post this morning.
WaPo
It sounds like a good alternative to Impeachment but there needs to be a thorough investigation into all the wrongdoing of the current administration by Congress and all relevant agencies or we risk seeing another would-be strongman attempt to overthrow our government.

Trmp has served, is serving, a larger purpose in the same way that America has in the past actually turned sh$t into shinola.

It is not Trmp's fault that he was elected. It is our fault. He was elected by the Constitutional regulations that established the electoral college system. And his folks made the rational argument that that is exactly what they worked for, if a majority vote was required, that would have been their strategy. Instead they worked the political border states which the Democrats assumed was part of their 'blue wall'. They exploited weakness in a perfectly legitimate way according to the Constitution.

You can say with truth that Trmp has been a fault detector. And we got it when we needed it. It is our job to recognize it as such and use what we've learned to fix our system and protect us for the time when the enemies of democracy will be, for want of a better word, competent.

Getting rid of Trmp is not fixing the system, merely getting rid of the stain showing where the disease is in the cells, the hiss of the pressure showing the leak in the tire, that stain you can put on your teeth to show where your brush does not get at the plaque. It is a kind of gift you get that you don't want, but if you work it, it will save you.

There's work to do, a lot of work to do.

Yeah, the extremists are still extreme, now with St. girl-who-got-shot.

The RushLimbows are doubling down. They are blaming the victim playing the "whatabout" game and projecting their motivations and emotions onto their opponents.

Really depressing was watching the Sunday talking heads shows interviewing former Trump chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and he was saying how when he was in the White House Trump was reasonable, just 'don't know what happened since I left'... This was unbelievable and reprehensible.

As I'm typing this NPR is going into a special report on the House of Representatives' resolution to issue the second impeachment of Trmp. 1800 Hours East Coast U.S. time.

So far he has never been less than appropriate. A couple nights ago he was inspired. If I remember his short pungent take on the Capitol uprising it was:

I found yesterday's letter from the Joint Chiefs of Staff to the troops comforting:

MEMORANDUM FOR THE JOINT FORCE
SUBJECT: MESSAGE TO THE JOINT FORCE

The American people have trusted the Armed Forces of the United States to protect them and our Constitution for almost 250 years. As we have done throughout our history, the U.S. military will obey lawful orders from civilian leadership, support civil authorities to protect lives and property, ensure public safety in accordance with the law, and remain fully committed to protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

The violent riot in Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021 was a direct assault on the U.S. Congress, the Capitol building, and our Constitutional process. We mourn the deaths of the two Capitol policemen and others connected to these unprecedented events.

We witnessed actions inside the Capitol building that were inconsistent with the rule of law. The rights of freedom of speech and assembly do not give anyone the right to resort to violence, sedition and insurrection.

As Service Members, we must embody the values and ideals of the Nation. We support and defend the Constitution. Any act to disrupt the Constitutional process is not only against our traditions, values, and oath; it is against the law.

On January 20, 2021, in accordance with the Constitution, confirmed by the states and the courts, and certified by Congress, President-elect Biden will be inaugurated and will become our 46th Commander in Chief.

To our men and women deployed and at home, safeguarding our country-stay ready, keep your eyes on the horizon, and remain focused on the mission. We honor your continued service in defense of every American.

Everyone is bailing on Trump now. He's no good to anyone with his seditious cooties.

America's oldest conservative magazine comes out in favor of Trump's impeachment

"In an opinion piece published by The National Review this Wednesday, The Editors of the nation's oldest conservative magazine declared that there is "no doubt that Donald Trump has committed an impeachable offense."

The op-ed stressed that President Trump "urged a crowd to march on the U.S. Capitol and pressure his vice president and Congress to abuse their authority" to overturn a free and fair election that Joe Biden clearly won.

As the mob breached the Capitol, Trump failed to forthrightly tell the rioters to stop, The Editors write, and the violence that ensued was the culmination of Trump's "ceaseless campaign of misinformation meant to delegitimize an American election.""

The rest is at the link.
