I watched her award-winning performance in the film
"The Heiress," based on Henry James,
in which she is jilted by Montgomery Clift.
She earned that award.

I read that book a couple of years ago, and have been meaning to watch the movie. This is a good reminder.

Her sister, Joane Fontaine, died in 2013 aged 96. There must be long-living genes in that family.

The beautiful person she was showed reality in Gone with the Wind where she acted in contrast to Scarlett O'Hara. RIP

We are 3/4 through Gone With The Wind, and she seemed like a very nice lady.

Indeed, these are two very professional actresses in their time
(and before poor Leigh had her breakdowns),
and GWTW is a good combination of professionalism and typecasting.

As to Scarlett, I recall a quote from a reviewer when the film came out, and the critic was well acquainted with the novel on which the film was based. The review praised Vivien Leigh for her achievement in the "fiendishly difficult role of Scarlett O'Hara." In other words, a portrayal faithful to the novel, which I know only slightly, in which the author pays particular attention to this character, faults and all.

And Olivia de Havilland has disclosed, in a lifetime of subsequent interviews, how she was approached through casting early in the undertaking of filming, and could in fact have had her pick of roles. She remarked rather bluntly that she was all too well acquainted with roles like the character of Scarlett (a subtle dig, perhaps, at her own sister, from whom she was famously estranged), and embraced Melanie wholeheartedly, right down to the plain black dresses that the character wore.

I've never read anywhere that Olivia was considered for the role of Scarlett.
BTW, talking about being faithful to the novel, in the book Scarlett is described as not being particularly good-looking, and so who do they get to play her? An actress for was considered one of most beautiful women in the world.
