Subject: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: keberoxu Date: 01 Aug 20 - 10:37 PM No, I haven't got this one! But: our Mudcatter JennieG from "Oz" just commented on it, and when I looked up the song using a search engine, I found that the sheet music exists in a digital file at the Petrucci Music Library in the Wiki system. Also known as the International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP). |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: Helen Date: 02 Aug 20 - 12:26 AM The ad was still aired when our family bought our first TV in 1964. The Aeroplane Jelly Song Coincidentally, and totally off topic, we got the TV just in time to watch the first season of Dr Who. It first aired in Oz in the early to mid '60's. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: JennieG Date: 02 Aug 20 - 12:57 AM Helen - some of the words have been left out in that ad! I remember it being sung on radio before we had TV; it's a rare person in my generation who grew up in Oz and who can't sing it. My ukulele group plays it as part of a waltz medley. When we get to it our audience (mostly older folk) chuckles, then joins in singing with great gusto. It's also a good dance tune should you wish to twirl around the floor; back in my dancing days it was often played for tripping the light fantastic. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: Helen Date: 02 Aug 20 - 01:10 AM JennieG, my sister has been running a beginners' ukulele class for a few years. When the group performed at a Senior Citizens' hall I suggested AJS and the same thing happened. It's a guaranteed smile-maker and group participation song. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: andrew e Date: 02 Aug 20 - 01:15 AM I have an A Cappella SATB arrangement. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: rich-joy Date: 02 Aug 20 - 01:19 AM Well JennieG, you may have to add the West Aussies of your generation to that mob not singing, as we didn't have that brand in WA then; not that I am aware of anyway. I only learnt it from my boyfriend in the late 60s, who was from "The Eastern States", haha!! :) Cheers! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: JennieG Date: 02 Aug 20 - 02:12 AM I didn't know that, rich-joy! I just assumed it was Australia-wide. Does W.A. sing "We're happy little Vegemites"? That and "Aeroplane Jelly" go hand-in-hand in my memories, I grew up in N.S.W. Helen, does your sister's group use "The daily ukulele" books? We found some waltzes in them, so our medley is "Let me call you sweetheart", "Around the world", Mexicali Rose", and AJS. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 02 Aug 20 - 03:14 AM Inevitably such a "national icon" will be found on the UTube: here is the apparently complete version. And of course some background information on Wiki. Notable: although the young singer is said to be from Sydney, I do not hear the slightest trace of an Australian accent; almost BBC "received pronunciation"! Times have changed since, haven't they: nowadays even many Lib politicians (comparable to Conservatives in UK) are proud of their national flavour in vowels, not only in food. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: rich-joy Date: 02 Aug 20 - 08:33 AM yes JennieG, we certainly had the Vegemite song in WA (even though I was raised on Marmite :) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 02 Aug 20 - 12:43 PM Is there a Marmite song as well? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: rich-joy Date: 02 Aug 20 - 08:34 PM Dunno, Keb - good question! Although, there has been some controversy about it all as many Aussies will not touch Marmite, instead favouring Vegemite. I've tried all the yeast spreads and Promite is the only one so far that I can't bear (sickly sweet)!! Even changed to Japanese Miso paste for a while, in an effort to eat more healthily ........... ANYHOO - just checkd YouTube and there are quite a few re Marmite!!! (I'll have to listen and get back, haha) R-J |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: rich-joy Date: 02 Aug 20 - 09:15 PM No, there are just Too Many Marmite Songs On YT to listen to (I've got stuff to do!), so I'll go with this one and you can practise your Iso Kitchen Dancing!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw4eCD3-UxA |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: JennieG Date: 02 Aug 20 - 10:06 PM I can't remember if I have tried Promite - if I have, the taste hasn't stuck with me! Have tried Marmite, but it tasted like Vegemite with a lot of added dust. I didn't like it. Himself doesn't eat Vegemite at all, he's a peanut butter boy. Much as I like Vegemite, having grown up with it, I seldom eat it these days as it gives me bad indigestion.......so it has become a rare treat, either on hot buttered toast topped with cheese (winter) or in a chese and lettuce sandwich (summer). |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Aeroplane Jelly Song From: Helen Date: 03 Aug 20 - 02:32 AM JennieG, I don't know whether my sister's group uses the "The daily ukulele" book. I think she just uses whatever music takes their fancy. |
