They lyrics are fine. Just split them in four-line verses.

It's from Sandy's last solo album "Rendezvous", released in May 1977. The 2005 Island CD reissue has a demo version with piano only that is much more interesting than the bombastic official version.

Oddly, I always prefered Richard & Linda Thompson performing that song, in particular the version from the BBC 2 "Little Night Music".
