Subject: In print folk magazines still around? From: GUEST,Lin Date: 20 Aug 20 - 09:18 PM Seems like there are no more folk magazines around anymore. In U.S.A. "Dirty Linen" has long ceased publication. "SING OUT" gone too. In UK, "Froots" has ceased publication. Is "Living Tradition" still in print? Can't find it in any stores in California. Back in the late 1990's there was this one book store that very occasionally would have a copy (not on a regular basis) but that store closed many 15 years ago, well all their stores everywhere closed for good. So,just curious if there are ANY folk music magazines anywhere that are in print? Actually still being published? I know there are other music genre magazines still in print but I am just asking about magazines that were primarily about folk music, Thank you, Lin P.S. Hope I didn't have too many typos or errors in above statements. It's about 106 degrees and AC barely working. Even my crappy fans barely cooling the house. Too hot to think.???? |

Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: GUEST,Peter Date: 21 Aug 20 - 06:26 AM So is Folk London. Selling well in the US despite the postage cost for some reason. Most of the surviving regional and local magazines seem to have suspended publication as there are no clubs or sessions to list at the moment. |

But is available on-line at the moment. Not sure about Shirefolk (Oxon & Hants & Herts etc) but I picked up a copy at the last Oxfolk ceilidh before COVID intervened (probably March). Haven't checked on Solent Waves (Dorset Hant & IoW ish) or Broadsheep Shrops/Wales border ie the Marches) Most of these I link to from mister.red and are listing sites for thing wot ain't happening at the moment. Though I did hear of some clubs doing real and virtual night. |

Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: GUEST,Lin Date: 22 Aug 20 - 08:30 PM Hi Vic, I am in California. Is there any distribution here? Years ago, there was a book store that used to carry a lot of music magazines. This was in the late 1990's. I used to occasionally find "Living Tradition" there but that book store and all their locations permanently closed at least 15 years ago. The only book store near me now is called Barnes & Noble and they do not have that magazine in their system to even special order it. They said it is not available fot their store to order it. I really enjoyed that magazine very, very much but cannot afford to order from Living Tradition directly. Do you know anywhere in USA I can find it? I am a senior citizen alone and on a very fixed income. If I can order from somewhere/someone in USA, I wouldn't have to deal with overseas very expensive postage so that would save me something at least. If you could please advise if you know where I can find it in USA I would greatly appreciate it. It is a great magazine!! Thank you, Lin |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: GUEST Date: 22 Aug 20 - 09:16 PM @Lin Vic is a contributor, not the editor. You will need to contact them direct. |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Aug 20 - 11:36 PM Tower Records in Sacramento used to have all the music magazine. It was so much fun hanging out at their magazine rack. Alas, Tower is no more. |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: GUEST,Lin Date: 23 Aug 20 - 09:39 AM Joe, Yes, Tower Records in Glendale, Calif. the one in Hollywood on Sunset and also Pasadena all had folk music magazines - all these stores long gone. |

Credit should be given to all the editors over the years, mainly members of Windsor Morris - currently by Beth Neill assisted by Jill Griffiths. Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: GUEST,Christopher Conder Date: 23 Aug 20 - 01:56 PM I gather that Canada's 'Penguin Eggs' is still going as a quarterly publication - next issue due on the 1st of September. I recall reading that it is subsidised, so is better able to weather storms like COVID. And in the UK we still have 'Songlines', a world music magazine but with a fair bit of folky content. |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: GUEST,Guest - RM Date: 23 Aug 20 - 04:00 PM Sean McGhee’s Rock n’ Reel is still in print with a folk review section and almost always has folk related articles |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Aug 20 - 09:14 PM While Sing Out! does not have its own issues online, it does have a complete or near-complete collection of Broadside Magazines online: https://singout.org/broadside/ I wrote to Sing Out! editor Mark Moss twice to explore how big a donation would make all issues of Sing Out! available online, but got no response. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: JHW Date: 24 Aug 20 - 05:22 AM Folk Roundabout, NE England, (as kindly mentioned by sandman) is still publishing quarterly. As there are no FCs in which to sell the magazine it can only be bought at present by subscription, even a single copy ok. Anyone wants contact I can advise by PM but obviously won't post. |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: Vic Smith Date: 24 Aug 20 - 08:59 AM Reply to GUEST Lin re. Living Tradition: - You could try going to their website and leave a message for their editor (Fiona Heywood) regarding USA availablity. It is at https://www.livingtradition.co.uk/index.php/contact. To get a flavour of the magazine go from there to their Home Page where there is the facility to read the cover articles of recent issues (several of which have been written by me). |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: GUEST,Mike Yates Date: 24 Aug 20 - 09:50 AM I know, and understand, that this thread is about printed folk magazines. But are readers aware that the on-line magazine 'Musical Traditions' is also having a problem at the moment? The editor, Rod Stradling, is now 77 years of age and thinking of retiring. He edits the magazine and has also produced many, many CDs of traditional music - including my 5 CD set of Appalachian recordings 'Far in the Mountains'. Rod is trying to find somebody to take over the magazine and CDs. But so far, so I am told, there has been no interest shown by anyone. It would be a shame if this magazine also folds. |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: Vic Smith Date: 24 Aug 20 - 09:54 AM Couldn't agree more, Mike. I would like to offer myself, but I am the same age as Rod! |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: JHW Date: 24 Aug 20 - 03:30 PM Similarly to last two posts the 'Folk Roundabout' Editor is determined that the next issue is the last unless volunteers step up. Equally we are none of us as young as we were. I still like a printed magazine that can be picked up and perused on a whim. |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: GUEST,Peter Crabb Date: 24 Aug 20 - 06:49 PM Similarly to last two posts the 'Folk Roundabout' Editor is determined that the next issue is the last unless volunteers step up. Equally we are none of us as young as we were. That was the only way that I could retire after 10 years at the helm of Folk London. The new editor is continuing to publish but without any clubs open sales are by sub, mail order, or more recently, from one of the three shops that stock the magazine. Putting the magaiznes in front of the public is the big problem for all small magazines. Circulation is too low and the margins too tight to use a distrubutor and a lot of outlets won't deal direct. Pricing is the next problem, too low and you can't give the retailer a decent cut, too high and people won't buy. Selling in the outside world has other problems, at least in the folk scene, because it is a fairly close community, people do tend to pay their bills. |
Subject: RE: in print folk magazines still around From: GUEST,Fiona H Date: 25 Aug 20 - 07:59 AM Hi all, Fiona here from The Living Tradition magazine. We are still publishing - thanks to lots of support from the folkie community, and advertisers and subscribers. Apart from a few specialist shops and some folk clubs, mostly in the UK, the best way to get the magazine is by mail-order through our website (www.livingtradition.co.uk). For those who would struggle to pay for a whole subscription, it is possible to buy individual copies from us, and we have a flat postage rate for them, so it costs the same to post them anywhere in the world. Please do feel free to get in touch with me at editor@livingtradition.co.uk, and if I can help I will. Keep well everyone, Fi. |
