“John Moulden On Irish Songs” – New Website - https://johnmouldenonirishsongs.wordpress.com/

I’ve been writing and talking about Irish songs for over fifty years. For some of those, friends have been suggesting I gather my published work together. I’m afraid these suggestions have now been acted upon. Under pandemical pressure, I’ve constructed a website “John Moulden On Irish Songs” with the address https://johnmouldenonirishsongs.wordpress.com/. At present it has some introductory items built into a structure which, I hope, can be easily followed. Eventually, a few items each month, it is intended to hold house all my papers and a good number of presentations. Essentially, it’s to be quarried, according to each user’s interest and inclination, though it would be best to start at Home and follow suggestions. Feedback will be welcomed; my full arguments will only become clear when it’s all been posted.

I've been threatening to do something similar but keep getting distracted by my other interests - no not beer and women but railways and photography.

Malcolm,I'm glad to see you energetically involved and still able to muster the traditional north English greetings. You old bugger! And don't just sit there contemplating your yet to be nascent website - do it!

Felipe, as you may gather, I'm well and more active than my generally sedentary pose would suggest; you? Derry seems a long way from Carn at the moment - a whole mindset away!

Both of you - and anybody else - give your braincells a workout; argue, complain!

It all looks well worth spending time on but I'm bothered about the cookie policy. Whereas some websites let you choose to accept or reject all but "essential" cookies, John's, though hosted in wordpress.com, just offers a link to "Cookie Policy", which turns out to be in an entirely different domain, automattic.com, and with no facility for being selective other than by blocking them in the browser. If I wish to do that, do I tell the browser to block cookies from wordpress.com or from automattic.com?

Either or both. automattic will be 3rd-party cookies: I would always block those. Then you can block the rest - or not, to taste.

This mobile firefox has cookies set to 'enabled, excluding tracking cookies' (which is the default) which will keep me signed in here but block cookies known to be from advertisers. (Not that doing that will stop Google knowing I've been here - there are other methods of tracking users.)

I regret the cookie situation which is imposed on me by wordpress unless I opt for a Paid Plan. I'm waiting to see how advantageous this might be. However, it's my understanding that these cookies can be blocked and strongly advise that anyone concerned should do so.

I paid for a Wordpress plan and then never got around to reworking my blog site. And they keep trying to sell me new features. It renewed this year without having any substantive changes made, so I'll probably go back to the free version.

What a wonderful resource! Many thanks for this.
I am in accord with much of your philosophy and when I get time I will certainly have a much more detailed browse.

Loved your work on the Belle-isle ballad. By all means please let me know when you add anything regarding any printed material from before roughly 1820. Steve and I are still working on pulling together as many earliest appearances of songs as possible.

I'm also very interested in anything new or definitive that turns up on those pieces that came from Ulster over to England quite early on, Streams of Lovely Nancy, Molly Whan, Willie Leonard, Fanny Blair, etc.

Steve, I'm touched! I do this, in the same way you do yourself, without thought of anything but the thrill of the chase and to make things as clear as possible for others, so its lovely when someone with as much experience and reputation as yourself, finds time to commend my work. Thanks - were you in Dublin when I 'did' Fanny Blair and the Spanish Snow? My work on the Spanish Snow is on the website - Fanny Blair's in my thesis.

Yes, I have your Fanny Blair history. I'll check out what you have on Spanish Snow, although it does ring a bell. No more experience and knowledge than you, John. We both do our best in our own areas and help each other when we can.
