Subject: Bert Jansch BBC recordings - request
From: GUEST,Colin Harper
Date: 17 Sep 20 - 05:57 AM

Hi all - Chris Brady suggested I try this forum. I'm curating a 6CD box set of Bert Jansch at the BBC for Earth Records. The project is well advanced and contains recordings from 1966-2009. But I'm still keen to find anything 'out there' that hasn't come to light thus far.

The 1971 'Sounds of the 70s' session is the Holy Grail, but there is also a strangely elusive BBC6 'Freak Zone' session from early 2005 (not the 2006 one with 'A Woman Like You' and 'The Old Triangle'). Also, Bert made many live-on-air sessions for BBC local radio in the 90s/00s, of which I only have a few.

If anyone has cassettes or reels in the loft, don't assume that anyone else has them or that the BBC has them - it may well be that these are the only copies of these things there are!

So, if you think you can help, please get in touch. :-)

Colin

Hi Colin, I'm sure there will be some people here who can help you, or who have an interest in Bert Jansch's songs. They may even have some of the recordings you are hoping to find. They are a knowledgeable and helpful bunch of people, so let's see what happens.

I have to admit that I am not familiar with Bert Jansch's songs but I'll check him out.

This is a great project. Like commensurate projects such as recovering and releasing Sandy Denny's many recordings, this is a project of love. I hope Colin gets as much support as we had for Folk Song Cellar.

probably this is not at all relevant but .....though i was brought up in glasgow and have since lived in inverurie and stirling and aberdeen i now live in cumbria and have done for the last 11 years. however, on the day of the scottish independence referendum we went up to glasgow - hoping for a great party. despite the late on rumours in the west end of a yes victory and the fact that we owe alisdair gray a pint (i later found that everyone in glasgow owed him a pint) - the victory was not to be. anyway - back to the point - the following morning i was walking round the botanic gardens listening to bert jansch in the drizzle. though sad, it was a perfect and lovely scottish moment that i won't ever forget.

Hi there - well, it isn't BBC but actually it might be useful in a (possible) different project. I'm at colinharper123 [dot] gmail [dot] com

Thanks!

I heard yesterday that a 16/12/2004 'Travelling Folk' BBC Scotland concert by Bert that I believed was in the BBC archive is no longer extant there. Surely someone must have recorded that one off-air at the time?

I might have something, but if you can track down one Dave Gaule, who used to live in Manchester, then Hull, I'm pretty sure he has stuff on reels. Clinton Heylin might know where he is now.

Thanks Bonzo. Dave Gaule's name rings a bell - I'm sure I would have acquired anything relevant from him tape-trading in the 80s.

I would have thoght that there would be some 'Richard Digance and Friends' recordings around from Capital Radio. We have about 15 recordings from various web sites, but alas none with Bert Jansch.
