Subject: Hullabaloo (UK TV 63-64) on DVD
From: Tony Rees

Hi all, this just appeared via my Facebook feed:
Network/The ABC Collection: Hullabaloo: The Complete Series - DVD, Region 2, 296 mins - available 30 November 2020

From the blurb (https://networkonair.com/coming-soon/3244-hullabaloo-the-complete-series):

"Massively influential but now almost completely forgotten, this early '60s music show featured the cream of British Folk and Blues – as well as some highly important foreign artistes. Hosted by musician, poet, sculptor and all-round polymath Rory McEwen, Hullabaloo was a key part of the early '60s Folk boom, with guests recorded live in front of an invited audience as ABC's Teddington Lock studios.

Featuring home-grown talent in the shape of Martin Carthy, The Clancy Brothers, Isla Cameron, Tommy Makem, The Spinners, Long John Baldry, Davey Graham, The Ian Campbell Folk Group, Bob Davenport and Rory's brother Alex, the series also showcased early British appearances from Carolyn Hester, Bill Clifton, Peter, Paul & Mary, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Sonny Boy Williamson and Esther & Abi Ofarim.

Unseen for over fifty years, all thirteen shows have been transferred from film materials especially for this release."

Looks amazing, pity shipping to Australia is heavily disrupted at present... Our UK friends must buy copies immediately!

I think this 1963 clip of Davey Graham playing "She Moves Through The Fair" (as instrumental - very raga influenced!) originates there as well:

Takes me back to see Lisa Turner's name among the others. Lisa was one of the regulars at the Half Moon in Putney when I first frequented it. There was a classy set of residents singers there, which included, Cliff Aungier, Gerry Lockran' Royd Rivers, and Lisa herself.

This is good news and will take me back to my days booking artistes into the show several of whom were handled by our agency.

Any idea from whom they can be ordered?

RE the question above about what was (the former) ABC Television, relevant info is here: https://www.comedy.co.uk/tv/news/5864/network-on-air-for-itv-archive/

Quote:
----------------
ABC Television, a major former ITV franchise holder (1956 - 1968), whose programming is now owned by STUDIOCANAL. ... Formed by film makers and distributors Associated British Picture Corporation, which also owned the ABC cinema chain, ABC Television was awarded the Midlands' franchise to broadcast the then-regional ITV at weekends from February 1956, some five months after the network's launch. It expanded across the North from May the same year, also at weekends, but found itself forced out of the network by structural and licensing changes from 1968. ... Due to its huge success, regulators the Independent Television Authority forced a merger between the company and London weekday franchisee Rediffusion: the two would relaunch as the now iconic Thames Television. ... David Hamilton says: "In October 1960, I made my television debut as an announcer for ABC TV at the Didsbury studios in Manchester. In those days there were only two TV channels - BBC and ITV. ABC, the weekend contractor in the North and Midlands, had a blockbuster schedule and people went to work on Monday mornings talking about the programmes they had all seen the night before, something that couldn't happen today - truly a golden era of television".

It seems that content is available for streaming via https://watch.networkonair.com/ - however probably for UK only (blocked for me here in Australia...)

Look like lost opportunities and tv coverage non existent?

Davy Graham, Martin Carthy, Lisa Turner, Rory McEwen, Pete McGurk, "My Girl" - a snippet (or 2) included in a brief Rory McEwen doco here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsMdCCkNFSY - from around 04:38 onwards (preceded by RM doing intro to the show around 04:15)...

All kudos to Rory McEwen - host of the series, under-appreciated UK folksong pioneer and also, amazing graphic artist, see the whole doco for more information.

Also - pretty sure this is a Hullabaloo track as well, despite the claim that it is from an "Australian folk music show" (maybe the show was syndicated there): Carolyn Hester "Once I Had a Sweetheart" (1963) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nsl6Su5eSz8

My long time colleague and co-conspirator David Thomas of London has spent time compiling this amazing tracklist of the original shows as per the DVDs, and has provided the following for me to upload here. Any comments/corrections or additional song or tune IDs are welcome.

It seems that the shows were not necessarily taped in the sequence or format of the broadcasts, but that the latter "shows" were composites from (sometimes/often) original recording sessions. He also suggests - though is not sure - that the 16 November broadcast was the pilot, but it's only a guess.

Thanks David!

A fascinating cross-section of folk (and some blues/R&B) artists from the early 60s - many no longer with us of course... Davey Graham (prior to Jansch & Renbourn's rise to prominence, as his one time disciples and rivals to a degree), UK R&B exponents the Cyril Davies Rhythm & Blues All Stars, Long John Baldry, etc. (prior to the rise of the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, etc.), Isla Cameron plus others representing the female side of the revival - before Sandy Denny, Jacquie McShee, etc., early Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick (in separate or solo affiliations), and so on; also reaffirming the place in history of performers like Rory & Alex McEwen, little known today but pioneers of folk music in the UK from the early 1950s, and with 10 years or so performing experience by 1963 (who were popularising not only folk/scottish music but also American blues with their performances). Plus visiting U.S. performers as well - Carolyn Hester, Sonny Boy Williamson, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Peter Paul & Mary... quite a cast list!
