Subject: Origins: Big Red Combine Harvester From: Senoufou Date: 02 Oct 20 - 08:09 AM Our lady vicar has been getting a Harvest Service together for the children, using a bit of online technology for our Village Facebook. One of the songs she chose was 'Big Red Combine Harvester', so I listened to it on Youtube. Now, I've been going to church for over sixty years, and was a teacher for thirty, but have never heard this song before. Anyone know it? When was it composed? It epitomises for me Norfolk in all its glory, because we have so many combine harvesters chugging up and down the fields, massive wonderful machines. WARNING! It's the most infectious EAR WORM imaginable, so don't go there if some songs uncontrollably invade your brain!! |

Our neighbour services and repairs combines, and during harvest-time (which is long over now) he is on call, as the blooming things seem to break down a lot. I've been humming/singing the song for days now - very catchy! |

Subject: RE: Origins: Big Red Combine Harvester song From: Senoufou Date: 16 Aug 22 - 03:04 AM Well at the moment our narrow, winding Norfolk lanes have 'big, red combine harvesters' chugging slowly along almost everywhere, and they cause the most annoying tailbacks. But I cheer myself up by singing this song in my head. And my neighbour (the farm machinery mechanic) has the biggest red tractor I've ever seen parked right in front of his bungalow. He's been spot-welding the huge cutters attached to the front, and fitting a new bracket to hold the counter-weights. I might compose a new song :" Big, red bloomin' tractor! Park it somewhere else, you clot!" |

If one lives in an agricultural region (as I do) one has to accept a bit of 'dust on one's sandwich'! Here in Norfolk, the locals would say, "Dew yew moind bor? Wot a load of owld squit! Oi hev ter git this haaaaarvist in!" |
