My posting on 8 January, stating that Kelly Harrell's January 1925 recording of 'New River Train' was the first, was wrong. 'New River Train' had been recorded almost a year before, on 26 February 1924, for Okeh recording company by Henry Whitter who had begun his recording career in December 1923. As far as I can determine, Whitter's recording of the song has not been reissued on LP or CD, although all of his later duo recordings with G.B Grayson are available on 2 Document CDs and about half of them (15) on a County CD release. Whitter met Kelly Harrell where they both worked - in a cotton mill at New River's edge in Fries, Virginia. It is thought that Whitter, one of the embryonic record industry's few contacts with southern musicians, may have had a hand in arranging Harrell's first session with Victor in January 1925. Of the 4 songs Harrell recorded at that first session, Whitter had already recorded 'New River Train' and was to record 2 others - 'I Wish I Was a Single Girl Again' and 'Butcher's Boy' - in April 1925. In August 1925, he accompanied Harrell on harmonica and guitar in an 8-song recording session for Okeh in Ashville, NC. It is likely then that Harrell's 'New River Train' is very similar, if not identical, to Whitter's. Whatever, 'New River Train' is an old folksong that was taken up by the early old-time recording artists. It seems the song was particularly well known in Virginia. Archie Green commented in his informative notes to 'Railroad Songs and Ballads: The Library of Congress Archive of Folk Culture' Rounder CD 1508 that Fields Ward's family had learned the song in Galax, Va, in about 1895.

You're welcome, Spaw. However, I stuffed up on the last line of the Harrell 'Remember' verse - the word 'ridin' should not be there just 'Than to see me on the new river train'.

The previous thread does not mention that it is also classic old-timey. And someone said once that 'bluegrass is old-time music in overdrive'. It was first recorded in January 1925 by the great Kelly Harrell of Virginia with Carson Robison on harmonica. Kelly 'I'm leavin' rather than 'ridin'. Monroe has basically the same words, including 'honey from my beehive'. The Watson verse mentioned comes from Harrell with a slight change. Harrell sang: 'Remember what you said, that you'd rather see me dead/Than to see me ridin' on that new river train'. Two takes by Harrell (he did at least 6) have been reissued on Kelly Harrell 'Complete Recorded Works Vol 1' Document DOCD 8026.

The song you're after is called "New River Train" and if you will enter that name in the box that syas "Forum Super Search" (delete that first) you'll find several old threads on the song.

When requesting lyrics, use the song or a line from the song in the thread title and you'll get a quicker response. A lot of us don't even open threads that simply say "lyrics request"....but today is your lucky day!!! Plus, I'm trying to avoid working on the remodeling of my bathroom.
