There's a cassette listed on Folktrax under JAZZ - Britain -

"Ballads & Blues - Sea Music" RPL radio prog prod Denis Mitchell 1956: CASS-0376

https://www.folktrax-archive.org/menus/music-types_jkl.htm

Does anybody know what this is?

Well, the Ballads and Blues Club was a folk club in London in the fifties.

Google came up with this BBC documentary about Denis Mitchell, whom I presume is the person who made the programme. I haven't listened to it yet, but the fact that Peggy Seeger is featured might lead one to suppose that it's something to do with that London folk club... maybe a listen will reveal more.

Interesting documentary, including what sounds like it might be footage from a programme about sea music (perhaps the programme in question?)...

I've done a cross-ref search of the folktrax website to get the track listing.

Calypso Woman - Cy GRANT
Captain's Apprentice, The - A.L. "Bert" LLOYD
Erie Canal, The - Jazz version
Haul Away Joe
Haul On The Bowline
Johnny Todd
Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her - Jazz version
Lowlands (Away) - Isla CAMERON (unacc)
My Bonny Lad -- Isla CAMERON
Round The Bay of Mexico - Ewan McCOLL
Stormalong
Titanic, The - Bert LLOYD & ch
Van Dieman's Land - Ewan McCOLL with gtr
Venezuela

It looks like a recording of an episode of MacColl's Ballads and Blues series (1953)'The Singing Sailormen'.

I wonder if anybody still has a copy of it?

Guest RA

The Ballads & Blues Club in London went well into the the 1960's.

May 1965 in fact. The last night was at the King of Corsica pub in Soho.

with Long John Baldry and Lisa Turner.

Thanks Hootenanny. Although it's before my time, I was aware that the club went on into the sixties. I mentioned the fifties in my first post because the original poster made a reference to 1956.

Thanks Doug for that link.
Even though PK has the cassette listed, I don't think it's likely he sold (m)any, or it wouldn't have passed under the radar.
It was a ground-breaking series and influenced the later Radio Ballads.

It was a "Recording of broadcast of March 10 [I presume 1953] in the North of England" and it mentions home office.

The British Library does have this recording in the Peter Kennedy archive, but it is amongst those that are available to listen to online.
