Not today, but the weather forecast says
that day after tomorrow,
the daytime high will stay BELOW the freezing point
(whether in degrees F or C).

Are you not somewhere in the Berkshires, keberoxu? I believe that’s a part of the world that gets a full-bore genuine winter.

True enough, Charmion, in the southern part of the range.
And yes, there are skiing resorts hereabouts.

The autumn, though, has been warm and wet,
and some oak trees have leaves on them still;
the grass remains green at the moment.
So this week is going to be
the first shock of winter coldness in this specific area.

Breaking out the long underwear ...

I guess I better get my winter coats out. Got a lighter-weight down one, and the serious LL Bean down, waterproof parka. So far, I've been fine with a heavy-ish flannel shirt.

It's supposed to get down to 70 in S.W. Fl tomorrow. I'll have to break out the cotton t-shirts.

We don't know yet whether we are having an early onset of winter or if it was a one-off. A couple of weeks ago we suddenly got a ton of snow and it has snowed lightly from time to time ever since. It has stayed cold enough that there is still quite a lot of snow against buildings, etc.

Typically, it is mid December before we have snow that stays with us.

Climate change for us, the way I see it, is that here in southeastern Alaska we are far enough north that we have cold weather, high mountains all around us which makes weather unpredictable and we front onto the ocean which gives us lots of moisture so that the end result creates snow. Which suits me!

Living in a conservation area, I am permitted to have an open real coal fire (the original century-old grate won't burn smokeless fuel). However in the interests of the environment, I shall refrain from lighting one until it actually snows.

Come spring I shall, however, need a smoky fire or two to discourage jays from nesting in the chimney.

The long johns feel very good under my trousers today --
it feels mild for winter and chilly for autumn.

The mountains are white, and it can damned well stay up above 8,000 feet! Snow is gorgeous up there.
