Subject: RE: Help: Where is Bill Sables today? From: Liam's Brother Date: 11 Jan 00 - 10:38 PM I turned on the TV at 7PM tonight and, much to my surprise and delight, Bill Sales was reading the news instead of the usual guy. Bill did very well, seemed to get a little confused between Washington state and Washington D.C. at one point and (possibly) muffed a story on the Swedish navy by ad libbing a comment about secret bank accounts and holes in cheese. Loma did the weather very nicely. I took all the celcius temperatures and multiplied by 1.6 so there was no problem. All in all, I think they're settling in very well.
All the best, |

Subject: RE: Help: Where is Bill Sables today? From: Andrew Sables Date: 12 Jan 00 - 07:47 AM It's great. All the people on mudcat know where my mum and dad are. Their family doesn't. They never tell us anything. So I look to mudcat for all my info. Dad, the computers being done next week. Have you seen a monster head yet (he'll know what I mean) See you soon Andy |
Subject: RE: Help: Where is Bill Sables today? From: Allan C. Date: 12 Jan 00 - 08:26 AM Sorry to have taken so long in submitting an update. This is the week before classes resume here at the college where I work and there is a ton of stuff to be done.
Bill and Lorna arrived at Dulles airport (outside of Washington, D. C. at a little past eight Friday night. From there they drove to Charlottesville, VA. By shortly after midnight, Bill and Lorna were in my livingroom where they met my good friend David (a Mudcatter in spirit only because he lacks a computer) who had come over from West Virginia. (Some of you may remember him from Anna's first gathering.) Bill and Lorna had been awake for roughly a day and a half by that time and so, after a bit of conversation all were in bed by about 2 am.
All were awake by about 9 am and we had our respective cups of tea and coffee. Then we did it all again. It was a dull, overcast day with a light drizzle and was not the best of days to show off the area. I took them on a brief tour of the old downtown walking mall (This was the same downtown that Johnboy Walton would visit from time to time. Earl Hamner grew up about twenty miles from here) and later for a quick drive around the countryside and then back to the house (for yet another cup of tea). At this time Bill and Lorna were quite receptive to some Derby-sage cheese and crackers to go with tea. I joined them in the tea from time to time during the day. They had brought some Yorkshire tea which was quite good and very rich.
Later, we cleaned up a bit and got ready to go out to dinner. My girlfriend, Kathy arrived in time to have a bit of the cheese and crackers while Bill and Lorna finished dressing. Then we left for the Copacabana restaurant. As you may guess, it is a Brazilian restaurant. I was pleased to be able to recommend a couple of dishes and also introduced the group to a popular Brazilian softdrink called Guarana. It tastes a little like a sweet gingerale. If you have ever had Verner's gingerale, it is somewhat like that. Anyway, it was a most pleasant meal. I got to speak a modicum of Portuguese to the waitress who was absolutely wonderful to us. She was from Sao Paulo and was a terrific hostess.
We were all comfortably stuffed. We returned home and started up the music. Bill was in especially good voice and he played the mandola he had brought. He and David (a really good banjo and dobro player) did some wonderful picking on "Chinese Breakdown" and I joined them in what turned out to be a really interesting instrumental rendition of "Never On Sunday". Kathy joined in on the singing of a few songs like "Banks Of the Ohio". She stayed until shortly after midnight and we continued playing for at least another hour or two after that.
Sunday morning was more or less a re-run of Saturday. We talked a little about going up to see Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's home) or one of the other great tourist attractions here. But my overall sense was that Bill and Lorna needed time to overcome the jetlag. So we had a rather calm day of just having tea and talking.
While that was going on, David got on the phone and called up the members of his band in West Virginia to see if they could all get together that evening at the dome. I have mentioned the dome before in another thread:
http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?ThreadID=9058
David's calls proved fruitful so we packed up everything and everybody and headed for WVA Sunday afternoon. By 8:30 that night we were all gathered in the dome and playing our hearts out.
One of David's band members, Janet, is primarily a folksinger although she plays bluegrass with the band. She sang a couple of songs that night and clearly has a voice which should be heard by as many as possible. She was totally thrilled to meet and hear Bill and purchased one of his CD's right there on the spot. She was amazed at how Bill and I had met each other and promised to visit the Mudcat at the earliest opportunity.
The dome is owned and was built by Dave Gant (phonetic spelling here - I think it is probably wrong) who can play nearly anything on a guitar. He is one of those wonderfully relaxed artists who makes even the most difficult stuff look easy. He may also drop in on the Mudcat sometime soon.
Dave Gant's son, Jesse, plays guitar almost as well as - let's just say differently from - his father. But he is even more impressive on the stand-up bass. He can work in more slaps and slides into a tune than anyone would ever have believed possible. And it all fits so incredibly well into the music. He is a real artist.
I got low marks in school under the heading, "Plays well with others". As always, I had a hard time keeping up and so mostly sat and watched. However, after some time had passed, Jesse handed me the stand-up bass to "hold" for awhile. I haven't really played bass since I was about 16. But I have been hankering to give one a try - (actually I had been planning to purchase one this year) so this was a real treat. I can't say I did all that well, but I think I was less than disruptive - so I guess that's pretty good for first time out. It definitely sealed the deal as far as getting one. I can hardly wait!
We all left the dome shortly after midnight. Bill and Lorna remained in West Virginia with David while I made the two-hour return trip to Charlottesville because I had to get to work in a few hours. It was a very pleasant visit. Bill and Lorna are both so at ease that I never felt like I really needed to do much of anything special to please them. They were fun to get to know (better). Laura has a wonderful sense of humor and pretends to give Bill a hard time once in a while but it is clear to see her affection for him and vice versa. I can hardly wait until I will see them again at Anna's on Friday. |
Subject: RE: Help: Where is Bill Sables today? From: katlaughing Date: 12 Jan 00 - 08:40 AM That's wonderful, Allan. Thanks. I was pleasantly surprised to find Bill and Lorna on an impromptu Mudcat Radio show with Max,last night, while also chatting with several Mudcatters in ICQ. Bill was masquerading as Bert in ICQ, so I dubbed him Billbert. I didn't get to hear a lot, but Lorna has a beautiful and infectious laugh. Kept losing the connection to the show from net congestion and a quirk in real audio, but what I heard sounded really great and fun. Can't wait to hear the big show, tonight, should be a real treat! katlaughing |
