I just treated myself to an early Christmas gift.
It is the new box set, Joni Mitchell Archives - Volume 1,
The Early Years ( 1963-1967)
There are 5 CD's and a wonderful 36 page booklet in the box set.
It is all of Joni's early material, many songs never released on an album until now. It is great, great, great!
Love all these early songs, hearing Joni speak about some of the songs,
many "live" recordings at small coffeehouses and folk clubs in Canada.

The booklet inside the box set is very informative and full of a lot of nice photographs throughout.

Purchased my box set at Barnes & Nobles in California.
I bought this at the store itself, not on-line.

I can't say enough good things about this box set!
I love it!!

Enjoyable listen. I think there is quite an influence from Joan Baez and (less so) Judy Collins in song selection and also singing style in the very early ones

Awful lot of duplication for me, and it's one heck of a lot of money here in the UK, over £50. Sadly I'm neither rich enough, nor that much of a Joni nerd to make it mine. Love the lady though I most certainly do.

Here in U.S.A. I purchased it for $60.00 at a book & music store.
A lot of unreleased material and different/live versions
of songs that were later released. So even THOSE songs sound different from later studio arrangements as they were performed at coffeehouses prior to studio albums.

The 36 page booklet is also very good about her early life as a child,
her teen years and about her earliest years in the coffeehouses in Canada. I'm actually a big fan of her early very folk albums compared to her later jazzy non-folkly styles.

I think $60.00 U.S. currency is about 45 pounds British sterling
(Approximately)

I figure spending $60.00 or $12.00 per CD with a 36 page booklet is a fair price in USA. for a box set.

Heard a bit of it from a local radio folk show here in Ashland Oregon. Sounded like real folk music! A voice and a guitar. I don't like folk music that is over produced with drums and a whole slew of instruments drowning out the voice. Don't like the folk shows that play mostly singer/songwriter where you'd have to listen to a hundred of them before you hear one you'd want to hear again (I turn the radio off before I get to that one in a 100).

The studios like to have you lay down an instrument track then lay the voice over that. There is too often a glitch in synchronicity I do not care for either. Rather have a normal live burp in a live recording, real music. So the tracks I heard from Joni was real music, folk music. Prefer that over her studio stuff. gopherit

I know what you mean about listening to a lot of singers until you hear the one outstanding one. I used to go to a lot of open mikes and most were just ok, or pretty bad. Then you will that one
"Gem" of a singer who stands out from the rest.
But of course you hear all levels of talent at open mike nights.
