The first powerful snowstorm for the northeastern US is on top of us now,
so might as well start a winter storm thread for the season.

Cue the gritters, the snowplows, and the tow trucks.

Charlottesville got ice. I have power, but people I know don't. It did the beauty thing in a big way, seen from heated provisioned shelter. I wish I could share one of the pix I took...

I gather it will ice more overnight. Looking forward to more beauty tomorrow and I hope I keep my power. I have candles but, it occurs to me, no battery-powered heat sources.

Ah, I do have chemical heat things for hands and feet, and lotsa clothes and blankies. Conclusion: no outage likely.

I also claim my lining up someone to shovel my sidewalk is why we got no no snow.

We have 4,657 quilts of varying ages, two woodburning fireplaces, electric blankets, camping gear, and clothing good down to -40F (and C, the same temperature). The house is extraordinarily well insulated, and there is both a gas and electric furnace.

We also have several bottles of excellent distilled spirits, adequate tea, coffee, and hot cocoa. Due to the Covid Plague we are well provisioned.

And the highs are supposed to be nearly 40F for the next week.... A dusting of snow may happen tonight.

No tellin' WHAT'S coming in the New Year anymore, however.

Our winter storms have nothing to do with those on the east coast but have several forecast for this next week. It's been snowing for a couple of days but just now my phone said that it is raining and the snow won't come back until 5 o'clock tomorrow morning. We shall see. They often promise us snow and then renege. :)

We just get incessant rain, one Atlantic depression after another, steered by that damned polar jet. We had that for six months last winter too. I'm driving about ten miles this morning and I'm expecting big road puddles (again). If I coloured in my barograph traces they'd look like mountain ranges. Oh, the joys of country life...

One city in New York state got 39 inches of snow between 1 and 6 AM. Imagine waking up to a silent, white world where you can't see your car because it's completely buried.

Snow shouldn't sneak up on us like that.

My question about your post is,
how close was that New York municipality
to the Great Lakes?
Because heavy snow is a way of life
for the snow belt formed by the Great Lakes.

Well, other places are getting snow dumped on them;
we're far enough south of the current weather
to be thawing out the tiniest bit
before it all refreezes after sundown.

We live more or less at the top of the North Downs, roughly 16 miles south of the centre of London - odd that you have to go up to get to the top of a Down!!! But, there have been occasions when we have 2 feet of snow but in our nearest town Croydon, which is only a couple of hundred feet lower, has just a sprinkling!!

In our Maryland suburb of Wash DC, we got several inches of snow. I had put a tarp over the car, and I'm glad I did, as the snow turned to 'freezing mix' for awhile and made the next couple of days nasty. I had done the shopping, so didn't need to go out... but the tarp kept the icy mess from clogging the wipers and kept me from tedious scraping. It's been just above freezing for 3-4 days, and gradually the stuff is melting. I slid the remaining ice off the tarp and uncovered the car yesterday as I do have to go out Monday and/or Tuesday.
   No new snow expected right away....

Might have snow by morning: we are 200 m above city centre level here so can quite often have snow while the centre has none.

There is definitely some sort of storm
cranking itself up in the middle of the continental US.

Nobody amongst the forecasters is certain
what sort of precipitation will fall,
because temperature lines are complicated for some reason.

Everybody seems certain that SOMETHING will be dumped on us.

In North Texas we don't get snow very often and when we do it's quite remarkable but short-lived. I put on boots and winter climbing gear and go out with my camera. I've had neighbors flag me down and ask if I can take photos so they can send them to the family in Guatemala. I enjoy getting photos of the dogs racing around, when it's fresh and deep they're like a bunch of little kids. The trick is to set the camera for really fast shots in the bright light and pan with the dog so you get some stop action, like the famous photos of race horses running on the track. Dogs running in the snow are much more compelling images.

This wintery weather we're getting this week and into next week will be a road hazard, and overnight there will be some freezing, but nothing so beautiful as a snowy landscape is due. If there is a "silver thaw," as we in Washington State used to call the ice-coated branches after a sleet storm, that's another occasion to bundle up and head out with the camera.

AAAAAAAAAND here it is:
first little invisible pellets of frozen rain
pinging off the windshield as I drove back to campus;
then little hard pellets of white snow;
slowly developing into something thicker.

The storm clouds are already thick overhead.

The Met Office (UK) is saying that we could be due for a re-run of 2018's "Beast from the East" in the next couple of weeks, with temperatures dropping to -10c. While that may not seem much in Northern US terms it is not common in UK.
Also recent 'gritting' of UK roads has not been as effective as previously. The system used here relies on the vehicles using the roads to spread the grit and force it down into the snow and ice. Much lower traffic levels due to Covid/lockdowns means the gritting loses its efficacy.

Not really stormy here now in Edinburgh, but sheet ice everywhere: lots of broken bones in falls etc, so as I already have one sustained 6 weeks ago, I'm not going out! Crampons and ice-axes even on our local Pentland Hills!
