Anybody got the dots for Fergie Macdonald's tune "Jimmy Savile's Welcome to Lochaber"? I have one of Fergie's tunebooks but it's not there.

I can't find a way to listen to it free, but it's on Apple Music (which I can't access). It's a 2/4 pipe march.

Not a very happy name for a tune, sadly. There must be people all over the country, including those in schools suffering unfairly from having been landed with that name.

This title is credited on the MCPS/PRS database as follows:
Composer        George Nicolson                        

Original Publisher        Isa Music.   

It would therefore appear that Fergie may only have recorded the tune, and didn't write it.

Jimmy Savile's association with Lochaber and the games is that he was
chietain of the games for 30 years,which led to tunes being named in his honour.I doubt many people would play them these days after he was exposed.

It's quite a good musical pun title to go with J.S's Chieftain role and easy to see how it would have been written to be used with or just inspired by the movement and atmosphere of these events   "..... thronged as Chieftain of the games, disc jockey Jimmy Savile marched the Lochaber Senior Pipe Band to the park". P and J 1975. The MCPS/PRS are having difficulties with fully distributing the tiny royalties associated with this work. Relatives of George Nicolson..or said writer himself (if living), may not be standing proud today of their association with this one.

Many trad tunes or tunes in the tradition seem to have several names anyway so I take it they can just rename the tune to something else rather than not playing it.

It's only a very average modern medley tune. It's only novelty is the title written for a specific tribute purpose. It is a modern copyright work (C) 1975 owned by a publisher and writer You really have no right to re-title without permission and credit to the writer. It is not traditional.

The tune doesn't have many titles. It has an original and one slight variant (registered), both in tribute with J.S's name   It's an average medley tune. Many of these bespoke tribute/vanity titles have little substance, and were written for the novelty of the moment. Sadly, the later debacle over J.S's horrible other side, gets in the way of this work being written in 1975, at a time and for a purpose of paying tribute to J.S' massive charity and Scottish tourist/ cultural boosting efforts. Still revisionism and cancel culture should not apply to a title written in a specific period and for a particular purpose. Also when you call a tune by a different title it wreaks havoc with copyright databases, unless its all set up with permission.   This one is forgettable and if it wasn't for re-issuing by digital companies on a minor scale - it would still be lying in the vaults.
