Subject: Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford From: cnd Date: 24 Dec 20 - 11:22 PM I'm creating this thread as a sort of repository of all the information I have on a fairly obscure gospel group from Maryville, TN: Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford. If anyone else has any information on the two of them, feel free to contribute. Pastor Leonard B. "Buck" Ledford was born on January 30th, 1922 in Yancey County, North Carolina [1]. He was apparently born as Leonard J. King but changed his name after he was saved by Christ, taking on his mother's maiden name. He joined the army in January 1940; while in Jackson, SC he was sent to the hospital for appendicitis, at which time he went AWOL for 13 days. Upon returning to camp, he discovered that his unit had been moved to Fort Sill, in Oklahoma. After being put in "the stockade" for about 2 weeks, the army gave him a ticket to Ft. Sill and told him to meet back up with his unit; instead, he returned to Weaversville, saying he was homesick and tired of army life. After some time in Weaversville, Ledford left for Knoxville, where he got a job working with the Happy Valley Boys (the incarnation of The Bailey Brothers created after Charlie Bailey joined the military) starting around October 1941, before the US joined World War II [2]. While with the Happy Valley Boys, he played on WROL, playing sacred and hillbilly songs with the band both on the radio and in local schoolhouses; he also conducted revival meetings in rural communities. During that time he was twice drafted and rejected from military service for being unfit to serve. In 1943, he married his wife, Elva Lee Ledford (née Lane), who was born in Robbinsville, North Carolina on June 11th, 1925 [3]. After getting married, he returned to Robbinsville, where he got a job working with the Tennessee Valley Authority at Fontana Dam before working as a farm hand and eventually getting his license to preach in March 1945. By October he was pastor of the Atoah Free Will Baptist Church [4]. He was arrested briefly for his desertion a month after the surrender of Japan [5]. Though I wasn't able to find how long Buck was arrested, he was free and preaching again by 1949, at which point he was living in Andrews, NC; while there, he helped officiate funerals and guest preached at local churches around the area [6]. He appears to have moved to Maryville by 1951 [7]. Buck helped found Victory Baptist Church in Maryville circa 1951 [8], a few years after starting his gospel music radio program, "The Soul Winning Gospel Hour," which ran for 55 years. The earliest I found Ledford specifically mentioned as a solo radio performer was in April 1951 on Versaille's WVLK; the first time I found his program specifically referred to by name was on Lenoir City's recently-founded WLIL in June 1953 [9]. After 7 years of pastoring Victory Baptist, he helped build and found Morning Star Baptist Church. For much of the 1950s, Ledford continued as a preacher and a funeral officiator, though he did also join a group of Baptists who rejected the new Revised Standard Version (RSV) Bible (the group wrote that the RSV contained "blasphemous statements" [10]) and also helped found the East Tennessee Youth For Christ group in 1955 [11]. 1955 was also the first year I found any mention of Ledford's former singing career, where in an add for a Baptist Youth for Christ meeting he was described as "formerly a hillbilly singer." This was important, as the meetings were centered around creating fellowship via gospel readings and hymn singing [12]. Despite his singing background, many of the revival meetings Ledford led had the singing done by other groups rather than Ledford himself. The earliest evidence I found of that changing was in 1957, when an ad for Ledford's Soul Saving Gospel Hour implored readers to "Tell Your Friends To Tune In For Good Singing And The Word Of God" [13]. By the following year, Ledford was helping host a series of revival meetings throughout Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina alongside his radio show, and was no longer formally the pastor of Victory Baptist Church; by September 14th, Ledford had founded and was pastoring Morning Star Baptist Church (also in Maryville), which he pastored for 38 years [14]. In 1960, Ledford sang with the Morning Star Quartet for a special service held to benefit the Tri-State Children's Home in Bristol, Tennessee; around this time, ads for his revivals also more frequently mentioned "special singings" alongside the services, though that doesn't necessarily mean previous ones didn't include any singing, or even that Ledford sang [15]. He also lessened the number of funerals he officiated (though he did not stop entirely) and spent the majority of his time leading revival meetings and preaching; he continued performing with the Morning Star Quartet (or other groups generally and unhelpfully called "his singers") through the mid-1960s. By 1963, Ledford's radio program was gaining popularity; it was carried on 6 radio stations in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina, as well as at least one station in the British West Indies [16] The following year was the first mention I found of Buck Ledford performing specifically with his wife; the paper advised its readers that "He and Mrs. Ledford will be singing the old songs of our Lord" [17] Miscellaneous fun fact, but Buck Ledford was the uncle to singer-songwriter Malcolm Holcombe, who remembered him as one of his main influences to start playing guitar and singing [18]. Buck Ledford passed away on November 22nd, 2002 (age 80) in Maryville, Tennessee; his wife passed on September 9th, 2007 (age 82) also in Maryville, Tennessee. Unfortunately, I could find no information regarding any of their musical releases, which I will discuss in a subsequent post. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] - FindAGrave for Buck Ledford [2] - Rogersville Review, October 16, 1941, p. 4 [3] - FindAGrave for Elva Lee Ledford [4] - The Asheville Citizen, October 3, 1945, p. 11 [5] - The Evening Telegram (Rocky Mount, NC), October 4, 1945, p. 2 [6] - Asheville Citizen, November 25, 1949, p. 34; Asheville Citizen, August 2, 1949 [7] - The Interior Journal (Stanford, KY), March 16, 1945, p. 5 [8] - A Baptist Bibliography, vol. 14, Edward C. Subject: Lyr Add: Heaven Was There (W. Huntley) From: cnd Date: 25 Dec 20 - 07:41 PM As sung by Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford, Heaven Was There, LFLP 15 HEAVEN WAS THERE (William E. Huntley) I'm thinking today of my old-fashioned home With father and mother in prayer While praying to Father that we might not roam It seemed that sweet Heaven was there I'd like to go back and think my days over And hear my name spoken in prayer When father would pray, "Lord, save my dear children" It seemed that sweet Heaven was there That beautiful place, as I think of it now No other with it could compare When by the old fireplace we humbly would bow It seemed that sweet Heaven was there Such singing and shouting we had in those days It lifted us out of all care When God would come in and we'd turn from sin's ways It seemed that sweet Heaven was there I'd like to go back and think my days over And hear my name spoken in prayer When father would pray, "Lord, save my dear children" It seemed that sweet Heaven was there |

Subject: Lyr Add: The Lord's Last Supper (Ledford) From: cnd Date: 24 Feb 21 - 02:48 PM As sung by Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford, The Lord's Last Supper, Lasting Faith Records LFLP 16 THE LORD'S LAST SUPPER I'd like to tell the story about the long ago A holy man named Jesus walked this earth as you all know He shared with His disciples a love both kind and strong And at the Lord's Last Supper, He taught them right from wrong He called them all together to sup with Him eve To break the bread and sip the wine although His heart did grieve He took the bread and blessed it, and shared the cup so red It was the Lord's Last Supper when Jesus softly said: "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sin. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's Kingdom." He told them of His sorrow and asked them all to pray He said the soldiers soon would come and take their Lord away Rough hands were laid upon Him, they jeered at Him with scorn They tortured and they mocked Him, and crowned His head with thorns "And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, 'Take, eat; This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me, for as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you do show the Lord's death til He comes." They marched Him off to Calvary and high upon a hill They crucified our Savior and the world went dark and still He did so men could live on set free from sin's dark plane Let's share the Lord's Last Supper until He comes again |
Subject: Lyr Add: No Depression (Ledford) From: cnd Date: 24 Feb 21 - 02:59 PM As sung by Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford, The Lord's Last Supper, Lasting Faith Records LFLP 16. Note the additional stanza not found in the Carter Family recording. NO DEPRESSION For fear the hearts of men are failing These are the latter days, we know For a great depression now is ready God's Word declared it would be so In that good land there is no hunger No orphan children cry for bread No weeping widows, toil and trouble No shrouds, no coffins, and no death I'm going where there's no depression To a lovely land that's free from care I'll leave this world of toil and trouble For my home's in Heaven, I'm going there This world's dark midnight hour is nearing The tribulation time will come The storm will break in mighty fearing And sweep lost millions to their doom Look up, rejoice, ye blood-washed people Before this awful time will fly The Lord will come as He has promised His Bride will meet Him in the sky I'm going where there's no depression To a lovely land that's free from care I'll leave this world of toil and trouble For my home's in Heaven, I'm going there |

"I came by free salvation, how about you?" CHORUS |

Subject: RE: Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford-Tennessee gospel group From: cnd Date: 15 Jan 22 - 10:54 AM Just before Christmas, I found an online seller out of Kingsport, TN who had a copy of Buck Ledford's Amazing Grace for sale. Out of what was either an insane stroke of luck or the grace of God, they had posted images of the label that did not match the album. When I messaged them to ask about it, they commented that they had several more albums of the Ledfords available as well, and asked if I was interested. Finding just one copy of his work online was crazy enough for me; before now, I had only owned 3 of Buck's records, and I'd found them at two thrift stores at least 4 years apart. Additionally, I'd never found anything for sale online. So imagine my surprise when I came across 5 more albums and 2 EPs put out by the Ledfords on eBay. I've already updated the directory to include the additional information I have. Over the next few days, I'll be adding the additional lyrics, and hopefully cleaning up the "Release not known" section. With this acquisition, I am now missing only 2 known albums (The Great High Mountain and Glory Road) along with an indeterminate number of EPs. I've loosly been planning a trip to the Maryville area for some time in the future, so who knows, maybe I'll find some more while I'm there. One final comment I'll make: a Discogs user named TheGlassbee has gone and added release dates to two of the albums online: Heavenly Mansion and A Shut In's Prayer. Both were pressed 1973 based on their Sound of Nashville matrix number; this lines up with my estimated time of release from known information fairly well. I do know that Buck made re-releases of several albums, so what I believe has happened here is that that those two copies were pressed in 1973, but that one or both of them were released before then. Unfortunately, however, with the sparseness of information elsewhere online and the lack of concrete dates associated with the releases, it's hard to say for certain. |

Subject: Lyr Add: I'll Be Gone (Ledford-S. McGinnis) From: cnd Date: 15 Jan 22 - 11:30 AM After some quick searching, this song seems to have become fairly widespread. Evangelist Rev. Earl Hughes (1927-2012, McCaysville, TN) picked up the song, and there's even a spirited recording of him singing it online. There's a fun modern version by Walt Mills (though Mills credits M. M. Conrad and Leona Conrad, so I can't claim with total certainty this is a Ledford original). As sung by Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford, Faith 969 I'LL BE GONE (Ledford-S. McGinnis) When this world begins to rocks, infidels and sceptics mock There's a time and awful anguish coming on Oh, what groans and bitter pain when the antichrist shall reign When the tribulation nears I'll be gone When the earth quakes everywhere and this world is in despair There I'll pestilences and famine all around Christ is coming soon to claim all who suffer for His name When the tribulation nears I'll be gone I'll be gone (I'll be gone), yes I'll be gone (yes I'll be gone) When the tribulation enters I'll be gone Soon the trumpet loud shall sound, with a shout I'll leave the ground When the tribulation enters I'll be gone When the antichrist shall reign, all must have his mark or name For without it you can neither sell nor buy Marvelous wonders He will do, call down fire from Heaven, too It is either worship Him or you must die Foolish virgins then will find they have here been left behind With their empty vessels and their lamps so dim They awoke themselves to try, for their lamps some oil to buy But the bridegroom comes and we have gone with Him But we'll be back (But we'll be back), yes we'll be back (yes we'll be back) When the tribulation's over we'll be back We may go most any day, but we're coming back to stay When the tribulation's over we'll be back |

Subject: Lyr Add: Amazing Grace (Amazing Grace Story) From: cnd Date: 15 Jan 22 - 02:00 PM As sung by Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford, Amazing Grace, LFLP 18 AMAZING GRACE In one of our southern seminaries, a young man studying the Word of God was asked to define the word "grace." Now this young man had been saved by God's grace, but in his heart he felt that he just didn't have the words to explain what it meant. So he went to his father and said, "Father, tomorrow I must answer this question. Now tell me, just what is the meaning of the word 'grace'?" This father looked at his son a long time, and he said, "Son, a long time ago, down on my knees, God saved me by His grace. But truly I know only but one answer that I could give." And this is what he said: Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost but now I'm found Was blind but now I see Now this young man was not quite satisfied with the answer, so naturally he turned to his mother, and said "Mother, tomorrow I must answer this question, and I'm sure you can help me. Just what is the meaning of the word 'grace'?" His mother looked at her son through tear-dimmed eyes and said, "Son, it's been many years since God saved me by His grace. And through the years He's kept me by His grace. And son, it's by His grace that I have taught you to be just what you are. But truly, I know only but one answer that I could give." And this is what she said: Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come 'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far And grace will lead me on Now this young man pondered these things in his heart, and on the next day returned to class. And the professor said, "Now son, I'd like for you to stand and tell the class just what the meaning of the word 'grace' is. This young man arose to his feet and with the spirit of God in his heart and tears in his eyes, said, "Yes sir, I think I know the meaning of the word grace." And this is what he said: 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed Now this old professor, of course--down through the years--he had been teaching these young men in the class about the Word of God and various truths out of the scripture. 'Course, he knew in his heart what the meaning of the word "grace" was. But today he looked over the congregation in astonishment, for a group of young men arose to their feet, and with the spirit of God in their hearts, they began to sing: When we've been there ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we'd first begun |

Subject: Lyr Add: Redemption Or Judgment From: cnd Date: 15 Jan 22 - 03:14 PM As sung by Pastor & Mrs. Buck Ledford, Amazing Grace, LFLP 18 REDEMPTION OR JUDGMENT While meditating on the words and the sayings of my Lord It seemed to me stood before the bar It seems I've come my debt to pay, I've heard the angels plainly say You'll now be judged just as you are I stood before the Savior's throne, met millions there, I stood alone Words can't explain the way I felt just then I thought of all the songs I've sung, thought of all the deeds I've done It seems I lived my whole life o'er again You know, we must all stand before the judgment seat of Christ, that we may receive the things done in our body, whether it be good or bad. Can you imagine having to stand before someone so great that even the Heavens and the earth will have to flee away from before His face? Well friends, whether you believe it or not, you too someday will have to stand in judgment, and give an account for the things done in this life. I tried to think of some good things I had done, but I knew that all of my righteousness were as filthy rags in his sight, and I thought of the words of Job, "all that man could plead with God for man." And then I plainly saw His face, He then stood up to take my place Tears filled my eyes as he began my plea He said "She's broken all the law, but I stand now to plea her call She's one of those that you gave to me." The book of life was written plain, and praise the Lord they found my name And with a cry I heard it understood Though all my deeds were written down, yet not a stain of sin was found Because they've all been covered by the blood The blood that flows from Calvary still reaches down to you and me It's the only thing that'll save this fallen race For when you stand before the throne, the only claim that you can own Is your redemption by amazing grace |

Would you bring the prisoner forth, please? And what, sir, is your name?" And He said, "Jesus of Nazareth." "You're accused of healing on the Sabbath day, and many other things the Elders did say. And they say that your disciples did pluck corn on the Sabbath day and did eat, and that you yourself sat with sinners at meet. What do you have to say for yourself?" But Jesus kept silent that day. "But wait, let's see what the witnesses have to say." Guilty of love in the first degree "My name is Bartimaeus, and I could not see the light of day. But I can see today because of Him." And another came, and another, and another, and he said, "I was a leper. I was one of the ten. And I just had to come back this final time just to glorify Him." And on and on they came that day. And each for Christ had kind words to say. But then the crowd began to cry, "Crucify! Crucify! Give us Barabbas. Today, this man Jesus must die." So they took him away to a hill called Mount Calvary; there, they nailed his hands and his feet to the old rugged cross. There He shed his last drop of blood for you and for me because the jury surely found Him guilty that day. Guilty of love in the first degree. Guilty of love in the first degree So He had to go to Calvary Where He shed His last drop of blood for me As they found Jesus guilty of love in the first degree |
