I have the chords to the Clancy Bros. (slow version). In their songbook they start off with Cm, but I find it easier in this position. Great song, but so sad. I don't think the reel tempo (i.e., Wind that Shakes the Corn) does it justice.

To me, the F# sounds strange, and I would better play simply a C instead. But I may know a different melody.
