From Donald Gorman on Facebook:

Members of ESF who have been around for a long time will be saddened to hear of the passing of Dr Peter Cook who was a regular at ESF when he lived in Edinburgh and worked at the EU School of Scottish Studies. Shetland fiddle music was one of his areas of professional expertise as an ethnomusicologist.            RIP Peter.

A lovely man. We met him at the Kinross Festivals and he invited us to spend a day with him at the School of Scottish Studies. Decades later we were in touch again sharing recordings of traditions that we had recorded in different parts of Africa. I also met him a couple of times through Dave Sykes - Peter's cousin and the dance caller with the first folk dance band that Tina and I played in.

Lordy lord, I am so sad to hear this.
My deep commiserations to Di and the family. Peter was a true gentleman, active in so many areas, key in the ongoing collecting and preservation of Ugandan traditional music and support for musicians there, maker of fascinating recordings about the non-official aspects of Scottish piping, and so much else.
One of the best workers, encouragers and facilitators I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Sad news Oh dear.   Peter and I sat on the Board of The Scottish Traditions of Dance Trust whilst it existed and shared our Shetland experiences.

Prior to Peter collecting in Shetland I had lived on Unst for a while and was able to pass on to Peter some recordings I had made of Gibbie Gray the Unst fiddler , who played in a style that was different to those on the Southern Shetland Isles. It was fascinating to hear him compare my earlier recordings with his later recordings. Absolutely wonderful to hear him talk.

RIP

Bob Blair

I was sorry to read of Peter's passing. My condolences to all those who love and miss him. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread. RIP
