We have just had a phone call from Pauline Renshaw telling us that Mick Peat has died - yesterday we think.

We knew he was not well - but.....

Just seen this on Facebook and I am very sorry to hear the news. While Mick did a lot of good work for folk music in general he was especially supportive of the singers and musicians of the East Midlands with particular emphasis on young performers.
He will be missed by all on the folk scene especially those of us on the Notts/Derby/Leicester folk scene.

Very sad to hear this, Mick was a giant in the folk-music field. His BBC Radio Derby folk programme with my old sailing pal, Lester Simpson, was superb. Condolences to Mick’s family and friends. RIP.

Fond memories of Mick in his Ripley Wayfarer days. Always a friendly and delightful chap to meet, and much enjoyed at our times at the folk events he organised and took part in. Sad news.
Regards too from Roy Johnson my Uncle.

Several years ago when I didn't know who Mick was,
I chanced upon an item I was looking for, which he was selling
[so long ago, can't now remember if the ad was in a paper like "Loot", or online...???]

We had good friendly phone calls about it;
he knew what it could be worth but refused to even consider selling it
for more than the low price he'd decided he'd be happy with..

He insisted I shouldn't feel bad as if I was ripping him off,
because he wanted to move it on to a younger skint musician..

Only after that did I discover who and how significant Mick was..

Mick Peat, what a genuine rare top bloke...

Sad news indeed. As Dave Sutherland said elsewhere in this thread, Mick was extremely supportive of East Mids musicians. When Fieldwork were gigging regularly he invited us onto BBC Folkwaves on several occasions. As presenter, performer and organiser he made a huge contribution to the folk scene.

Mick Peat was a stalwart of the folk scene and worked hard on our behalf. The Radio Derby website gives a good picture of the man. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread. My condolences go to all those who know and love him.

Sad news indeed. A great enthusiast for the music, a great encourager, especially of younger musicians, and always willing to help. He made a great contribution, particularly to the music and dance scene in the Midlands. He'll be sadly missed. Condolences to Celia and the family.

It's just so sad to think of all the people who will hugely miss seeing Mick again. Every gig we went to and every edition of "Folkwaves" we listened to were made all the more enjoyable because of his presence. Much love to Celia, family and close friends. xx

Mention of Whitby calls to mind an especial memory of Mick and Celia manning the door to The Big Bamboo on the Wednesday Bop Till You Drop nights. Such was the popularity of this event with Shagpile led by Dave Burland, that queues would develop round the Royal Hotel carpark and out into the street a good hour before 'doors.' Once these opened there was much jostling and shoving to get through the narrow entrance that it took diplomacy with a firm hand to keep us in order, achieved in no small part with Mick's gruff good humour. Woe betide any queue jumping or gate-crashing though - you wouldn't argue with Mr Peat!

The British folk scene is built on the shoulders of good, kind, humble, selfless, hard-working men and women. Mick Peat epitomises all of those values and then some. We are lucky to have had him as part of our gang, and he will be missed terribly.

Very sad to hear about the loss of Mick Peat. He was a great fan, supporter and promoter for my band Roaring Jelly and its later offshoot The Omega 3. My wife Gill remembers him fondly as someone who gave her a warm welcome to Derbyshire when she moved from the south to live with me after the break-up of my first marriage. Mick was a good mate, a warm, genuine person and all round good bloke. He will be missed. Condolences to Celia and all friends and family.

So very sorry to hear this sad news of Mick's passing. He was a great influence on the Folk scene particularly in Derbyshire. He was such a genuine, kind person. He came to Fylde festival most years. Mick will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Condolences to Celia and the family.

For the benefit of those not in the UK
Mick Peat started[as far as i know] with the group The Ripley Wayfarers
The Ripley Wayfarers were (I believe) :
Mick Peat, Barry Renshaw, Andrew Train, Arthur Renshaw, Phil Langham.
They ran a very successful folk club for many years in Ripley
They recorded Chips and Brown Sauce and another LP "The Wells" a record of trad Derbyshire trad and contemporary songs. Mick Peat, was, until recently, a co-presenter of BBC Radio Derby's Folkwaves, along with Lester Simpson

Mick Peat received his EFDSS Gold Badge as part of a special event at the virtual Derby Folk Festival in October 2020, organised by the FOLK3D team, codirector Bob Rushton, and Mick's lifetime friend and colleague, Barry Coope. Fi Fraser, a member of the Board of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, presented Mick with his badge, while Sarah Matthews wrote his citation.
