Subject: Tune Req: Duet for small pipes and voice? From: testingwithfire Date: 23 Jan 21 - 07:17 PM Hi, new to Mudcat, long-time occasional visitor. A friend of mine plays the Northumbrian small pipes. I am a singer. We're trying to find something to collaborate on. The challenges: * He needs sheet music to learn from. * I'm a woman with a fairly typical vocal range (E3 - F5). I prefer to stay in the lower range though. * Apparently we need to stick to Mixolydian mode * I need a tune with lyrics, English or some recognizable twist thereon (dialect is OK) We were thinking of Mingulay Boat Song but ... I'm not feeling it. Something a little more acerbic like Peter Bellamy's settings of Kipling's verse is more my style. I can arrange a descant but first I have to find a tune that we both like and can both learn/play. I've been spiraling around YouTube, mainlynorfolk, and now these forums for hours, and haven't found much. Figured some of you might have ideas at the ready, though. Thanks! |

From: Tattie Bogle Date: 23 Jan 21 - 07:30 PM Have a look a any YouTubes of Pauline Cato, who plays Northumbrian pipes and sings at the same time! Otherwise go for songs that YOU like and adapt them to suit your singing and your piper's scale. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Duet for small pipes and voice? From: Jack Campin Date: 23 Jan 21 - 07:54 PM Northumbrian pipes can play in any mode. Get yourself a copy of the Northumbrian Minstrelsy. "Do Li A" acerbic enough? - it's a song of the Geordie prostitutes about a shipful of punters coming in. |
