January 20, 2025 The White House Executive Order; The Secretary of the Interior shall rename as the “Gulf of America” the area formerly named as the Gulf of Mexico.

From GREAT SPECKLED BIRD (1970); "Calgary" (Ian Tyson / Sylvia Tyson)

Drive me to the airport, 'cause my baby's waiting
Up north in Calgary the ice is breaking
Color that jet plane going, color me gone

Down on the Gulf of Mexico with the sunlight shifting
I was playing cards and losing while the blizzards drifting
In Calgary she's waiting all alone, all alone

It's one twenty-eight one way
Oh you know I'll pay you back someday

Drive me to the airport, you know my baby's waiting
Way up north in Calgary the ice will soon be breaking
Color that jet plane going and color me gone

Ian and Sylvia, of course, came from Canada and, like other Canadians, could come up with dramatic descriptions of winter. I can't imagine anyone changing the words!

On this day last year, 17 January 2024, a study revealed that Greenland was losing 30 million tonnes of ice an hour, 20 per cent more than previously thought.

FAREWELL TO TARWATHIE (Fareweel Tae Tarwathie, Roud number 2562), words written by George Scroggie in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, around 1850. The piece is part of the collection The Peasant's Lyre.

Our ship she is rigged and ready to sail,
Our crew they are anxious to follow the whale.
Where the icebergs float, and the stormy winds blow;
Where the land and the ocean is covered with snow.

The cold clime of Greenland Is barren and bare;
No seed time nor harvest is ever known there.
The birds here sing sweetly on mountain and dale;
But the songsters are mute in the land of the whale.

9 January 1799: Prime minister William Pitt (the Younger) introduced income tax at two shillings in the pound to raise funds for the Napoleonic wars.

Taxman, written by George Harrison, was the first track on the Beatles' LP, Revolver, released on 5 August 1966. “‘Taxman’ was when I first realised that even though we had started earning money, we were actually giving most of it away in taxes,” Harrison wrote in his autobiography I, Me, Mine. He was outspoken in his opposition to the government using their income to help fund the manufacture of military weapons.

7 January On this day in 1857, the London Central Omnibus Company started its first services. The first vehicles were horse=drawn, of course.

It's worth it just to ride inside
That thirty-foot-long by ten-foot-wide
Inside that monarch of the road
Observer of the highway code
That big six-wheeler, scarlet-painted
London Transport, diesel-engined
Ninety-seven horsepower omnibus
Hold very tight please!

22 January On this day in 1944, the Allied army landing began at Anzio, Italy.

D-Day Dodgers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE5Cgvc3JqU Ian Campbell Folk Group

Wikipedia; The song was written in November 1944 by Lance-Sergeant Harry Pynn of the Tank Rescue Section, 19 Army Fire Brigade, who was with the 78th Infantry Division just south of Bologna, Italy. There were many variations, but the song generally and sarcastically referred to how easy their life in Italy was. Although Hamish Henderson did not write the song, he did collect different versions of it and it is attributed to him in the sleeve notes of the Ian Campbell Folk Group's "Contemporary Campbells". Many different variations have been recorded.

We're the D-Day Dodgers out in Italy Always on the vino, always on the spree.
Eighth Army scroungers and their tanks We live in Rome – among the Yanks.
We are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy.

The Volturno and Cassino were taken in our stride. We didn't have to fight there. We just went for the ride.
Anzio and Sangro were all forlorn. We did not do a thing from dusk to dawn.
For we are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy.

LOVE TO BE WITH YOU    by Andy Irvine

We pulled up our anchor and set sail in sweet November
The day was fine, the sun did shine
Such moments I remember
Your face so sad and lonely, fading from my view
But some small part of me remains with you

Sometimes I feel I must fly away
Sometimes I feel goodbye’s a word I just can’t say
Bud I’d love to be with you
I’d love to be with you

Outside the blizzard raging cares not for our distress
The bitter taste of failure so nearly sweet success
Brave enough we wer? alas, to no avail
Such stories we could tell you
Had w? lived to tell the tale
