This month I heard someone dedicate a Percy French song to the author on the anniversary of his death, but on consideration, birthdays are usually the suitable time for commemorating deceased singers and songwriters, though of course we sing some of their songs all year round. |

From: Felipa Date: 25 Jan 22 - 04:31 PM I think with Ewan MacColl there is a clear delineation between songs he wrote or co-wrote, and other songs that he recorded (mainly traditional songs, but MacColl recorded an album of Robbie Burns' songs as well). The one place there is sometimes confusion is whether a song was composed by Peggy Seeger or Ewan MacColl, as they were close collaborators. In the case of Burns, he adapted folksongs as well as writing original poetry. So sometimes you will find a Burns version and other versions of a song such as Aye Waukin' O or The Curragh of Kildare. I was thinking of what we would sing to commemorate Pete Seeger (birthday 3 May). He wrote songs but was more important as a performer and leader. There are also songs which Pete had a part in adapting and arranging, such as We Shall Overcome and Wimoweh. |

Actually, he was born in the U.S. to an Irish father and an Anglo-Irish (English born) mother. The family returned to Ireland, where Joyce was brought up. Joyce lived in England from his teens and identified as English but that was an adopted persona. I read that he became a German citizen in 1940. He was never a British citizen so technically could not be guilty of treason to the United Kingdom. Joyce did carry a British passport when he went to Germany.
