Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of January? That is : (A) Any songs with January in the title (B) Any songs with a January date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in January even if the lyrics do not actually say so.
It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and further sources of information about them.

INDEX OF JANUARY SONGS

Directly below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread. If a title in this index is blue then by clicking it you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occur. JUNE IN JANUARY is a popular song with music by Ralph Rainger and lyrics by Leo Robin, published in 1934.

Bing Crosby
June In January
The song was introduced in the movie Here Is My Heart by Bing Crosby in 1934. The Crosby recording, made on November 9, 1934 with Georgie Stoll and his Orchestra, became a number #1 hit on Decca Records and has since has become a popular standard, recorded by many artists. Crosby recorded the song again for his 1954 album Bing: A Musical Autobiography and this version was heard alongside an image of a Crosby lookalike in the film The Joker Is Wild (1957), starring Frank Sinatra. Crosby recorded it again in 1977 for his final album Seasons.

SHINE ON HARVEST MOON

Shine on, shine on harvest moon
Up in the sky
I aint had no lovin'
Since January, February, June or July

Wikipedia sez,

"Shine On, Harvest Moon" is a popular early-1900s song credited to the married vaudeville team Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth. It was one of a series of moon-related Tin Pan Alley songs of the era. The song was debuted by Bayes and Norworth in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1908 to great acclaim. It became a pop standard, and continues to be performed and recorded in the 21st century.

I did a search for song: JANUARY

and a whole bunch of songs came up but the one I was looking for is an old pop song called January by a group called Pilot.

January - Pilot

I'm not recommending it because it was annoying back in the '70's so I can't imagine it has improved with age. :-D

Also, 26 January is the anniversary of the white invasion of Australia, i.e. the arrival of Captain Cook. The beginning of the end of the real life and culture for the First Nations people here.

I'll have to think about whether I know any songs about it. I can't recall any at present.

Helen I was going to suggest "January" too. I rather like both that and Pilot's other big hit "Magic" which has been taken up as a football chant in many a football ground. Saying that I don't mind out and out pop songs and I was only a kid at the time of its release which maybe explains why I like it. The pop songs of our childhood tend to stick with us through time - though I either like a song or not without regard to the genre! Both members of Pilot had been in the teeny-bop group Bay City Rollers but left to form Pilot before the Rollers were catapulted to teeny stardom. Though the song "January" did hit #1 in the UK charts before their former group managed to do that. Both members of Pilot then went on to work with Alan Parsons Project.

For a song more suited to mudcat how about RANTIN' ROVIN' ROBIN by Burns which mentions the month of his birhday in verse one.

Thank you Reinhard you have given us a bumper crop. I added the blue click link above to Roy Bailey’s performance of Ray Hearne’s January Snows on YouTube. In doing that I found another song called January Snows which I post below:
JANUARY SNOWS (2)

The Woods Band
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IvemdETLoI

It was in the month of January
The hills all white with snow
When over hill and valley
My true love he did go

It was then I found a fair pretty maid
With a salt tear in her eye
And she had a baby in her arm
And bitter oh was her cry

Oh cruel was my father
That bound the doe on me
And cruel was my mother
His dreadful kind to see

Cruel was my own true love
Who changed his mind for gold
And cruel was that winter's morn
That chains my heart with cold

Oh the taller that the country grows???
The sweeter is the???
And the pair of clouds
A young man's deeds
No closer is his heart

He will kiss and embrace you
Until he thinks he has you won
Then he'll go away and leave you
For some other one

ROLL DOWN TO RIO
By Rudyard Kipling
Roll down to Rio (Mainly Norfolk) This poem accompanied Rudyard Kipling's story The Beginning of the Armadillos from his book Just So Stories. Peter Bellamy sang it as Roll Down to Rio, accompanying himself on concertina, on his fourth album of songs set to Kipling's poems, Keep on Kipling.

Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman sang Follow Me 'Ome and Roll Down to Rio in 1998 on their CD Bonnet & Shawl. Jon Boden sang Rolling Down to Rio as the 10 February 2011 entry of his project A Folk Song a Day. The Young'uns sang Rolling Down to Rio in 2012 on their CD When Our Grandfathers Said No. They commented in their liner notes: Rolling Down to Rio appeared in The Beginning of the Armadillos, one of Kipling's Just So Stories, and was given this lovely tune by Peter Bellamy.

I've never sailed the Amazon, And I've never reached Brazil;
But the Don and Magdelana, They can go there when they will!

Yes, weekly from Southampton, Great steamers, white and gold,
Go rolling down to Rio (Roll down—roll down to Rio!)
And I'd like to roll to Rio Some day before I'm old!

Portuguese landed on the soil of Guanabara Bay on the1st January 1502.  The bay forms the opening of a river, hence the name ‘Rio de Janeiro’ which means ‘River of January’.

A STRATON CAROL OF THE MONTHS
The Stratton Carol · Brenda Wootton
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOrE-LcqMVI

January's when cold winds do blow
February brings us frost and snow
March is when young lambs do play
April brings us flowers so gay
May is when the fields are green
June is when new hay is seen
July's days are very warm
August brings the thunderstorm
September's harvest fields are clear

By Graeme Miles

Graeme Miles' song "When the Green Man Walks the Forest", see the recently revived thread of the same name, has the first line

January's all but over; February comes soon.

Martyn Wyndham-Read sang it on his 2001 album of Graeme Miles' songs, "Where Ravens Feed".

To the fishing grounds went trawlers, crews, skippers and mates,
Out to the North Sea past Grimsby and Spurn,
But Lorella and Roderigo did not return."

The fleet were off Iceland in a howling maelstrom,
With hundred foot waves and thick ice on the mast,
Three trawlers turned over, to the sea they were cast."

FOUR RODE BY, by Ian Tyson, has a stanza,

They hung the boys in January eighteen eighty three
First time in that province that they'd strung up brothers three
And their sons killed nineteen Germans cross the seas back in seventeen
One thing that's for damned sure they're a wild old family

January 13, 1864: Death of Stephen Foster.

Larry Kaplan wrote, in the introduction to his song "Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts," "Stephen Foster was only thirty-eight years old when he died, impoverished and alone, in New York City. In his pocket at the time of his death was a small piece of paper containing the first few lyrics of, perhaps, his next song. Foster lived and wrote music in a time when America as a nation was desperately trying to define (or redefine) its own identity, a time of intense nationalism, and yet a time of civil war. Perhaps more than any other popular musician of his time, he helped to shape some of that identity."

DEAR FRIENDS AND GENTLE HEARTS
by Larry Kaplan

Down at Bellevue Hospital,
Out on those nameless wards,
Tonight a young man passed away
Alone, without a word.
Brought there from a boarding house
On the Bowery downtown,
And on his bed a list of things
The nurses there had found.
A coat, a hat, his pants, a vest,
And a beat-up pair of shoes,
And, in his pocket, signed by him,
A dollar I.O.U.;
And a slip of folded paper
Torn off from a paper bag:
The first words of another song
This whole world might have had.

CHORUS (after each verse):
"Dear friends and gentle hearts ... "
Wherever your last songs may be,
Are they lost out in America
Between the centuries?
Are the melodies still waiting
For the ones who need to hear,
Though the piano halls and minstrel shows
Have faded through the years?

Well, the hospital had sent for me,
But no more would they do,
My name and address taken from
Poor Stephen's I.O.U.
They said "He's just a vagabond;
So many more like him.
They spend the last few cents they have
On poor man's rum and gin.
But hard times in America
Are hard times for us all.
Some folks bide for better days;
Some must take the fall.
Some can turn to poetry,
Or lose themselves in song;
Some set out to change the world,
Then lose the path they're on.

So, yes, I knew this gentleman;
Perhaps you've heard the cheers
When Mr. Foster graced this country's
Finest halls for years.
And he led us in the choruses
This whole great nation knew,
But he never recognized his worth
Or what his songs could do.
Now pride brought down by poverty
Is such a tragic thing;
No matter who the man may be,
It steals most precious things.
It takes the faith to know yourself;
It robs the will to try.
But, if it spares your poetry
The music never dies.

Though we seek mirth and beauty, and music light and gay,
There are frail forms fainting at the door.
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say,
"Oh, hard times, come again no more."

STEPHEN FOSTER SONG
by Teresina Huxtable

Those whose days were like your own
Are scattered now across the years
Share no countries, plans, or times
Though once we lived on common ground.

CHORUS (after each verse):
Is someone left to know the way,
Protect us, bring us home again?
Sit at table one more time,
Sing that Stephen Foster song?

If we knew then of leaving home,
But tens and twelves are unafraid.
Foresight's dear and hindsight's not,
And far apart is how we've grown.

Roads and paths come overgrown,
Lose the time and lose the way.
Gather those around me now,
I set a table of my own.

Recordings (none online yet):
Teresina Huxtable with Carol Christensen and Liz Hood, Melancholy Baby (1986)
Ann Mayo Muir with Gordon Bok and Ed Trickett, Language of the Heart (1994)
