Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of January? That is : (A) Any songs with January in the title (B) Any songs with a January date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in January even if the lyrics do not actually say so.
It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and further sources of information about them.

INDEX OF JANUARY SONGS

JUNE IN JANUARY is a popular song with music by Ralph Rainger and lyrics by Leo Robin, published in 1934.

Bing Crosby
June In January
The song was introduced in the movie Here Is My Heart by Bing Crosby in 1934. The Crosby recording, made on November 9, 1934 with Georgie Stoll and his Orchestra, became a number #1 hit on Decca Records and has since has become a popular standard, recorded by many artists. Crosby recorded the song again for his 1954 album Bing: A Musical Autobiography and this version was heard alongside an image of a Crosby lookalike in the film The Joker Is Wild (1957), starring Frank Sinatra. Crosby recorded it again in 1977 for his final album Seasons.

So sayeth     Wikipedia.

SHINE ON HARVEST MOON

Shine on, shine on harvest moon
Up in the sky
I aint had no lovin'
Since January, February, June or July

Wikipedia sez,

"Shine On, Harvest Moon" is a popular early-1900s song credited to the married vaudeville team Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth. It was one of a series of moon-related Tin Pan Alley songs of the era. The song was debuted by Bayes and Norworth in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1908 to great acclaim. It became a pop standard, and continues to be performed and recorded in the 21st century.

I did a search for song: JANUARY

and a whole bunch of songs came up but the one I was looking for is an old pop song called January by a group called Pilot.

January - Pilot

I'm not recommending it because it was annoying back in the '70's so I can't imagine it has improved with age. :-D

Also, 26 January is the anniversary of the white invasion of Australia, i.e. the arrival of Captain Cook. The beginning of the end of the real life and culture for the First Nations people here.

I'll have to think about whether I know any songs about it. I can't recall any at present.

January Man used to get sung a lot, good song, has all months.
I've usually done 'Concerning of three young men, One night in January'
(I'm not into poaching and wouldn't eat game or shoot gamekeepers)

Helen I was going to suggest "January" too. I rather like both that and Pilot's other big hit "Magic" which has been taken up as a football chant in many a football ground. Saying that I don't mind out and out pop songs and I was only a kid at the time of its release which maybe explains why I like it. The pop songs of our childhood tend to stick with us through time - though I either like a song or not without regard to the genre! Both members of Pilot had been in the teeny-bop group Bay City Rollers but left to form Pilot before the Rollers were catapulted to teeny stardom. Though the song "January" did hit #1 in the UK charts before their former group managed to do that. Both members of Pilot then went on to work with Alan Parsons Project.

For a song more suited to mudcat how about RANTIN' ROVIN' ROBIN by Burns which mentions the month of his birhday in verse one.

Thanks Allan Conn. - Here's a recording: Jim Malcolm

Thanks for the info, Allan. I like a lot of pop songs but not that one. I never ever liked Bay City Rollers - not my thing - but I have all of the Alan Parsons Project albums.

SHOOTING GOSCHEN’S COCKS UP
Shooting Goshen's Cocks Up / The Bold Poachers:
'On the twenty-fourth of December, my time it did expire.
When I got out, I had some scran; that's what I did require;
And when I had a drink of beer, I really felt quite merry,
But my mate he don't get out until the middle of January.'

Thank you Reinhard you have given us a bumper crop. I added the blue click link above to Roy Bailey’s performance of Ray Hearne’s January Snows on YouTube. In doing that I found another song called January Snows which I post below:
JANUARY SNOWS (2)

The Woods Band
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IvemdETLoI

It was in the month of January
The hills all white with snow
When over hill and valley
My true love he did go

It was then I found a fair pretty maid
With a salt tear in her eye
And she had a baby in her arm
And bitter oh was her cry

Oh cruel was my father
That bound the doe on me
And cruel was my mother
His dreadful kind to see

Cruel was my own true love
Who changed his mind for gold
And cruel was that winter's morn
That chains my heart with cold

Oh the taller that the country grows???
The sweeter is the???
And the pair of clouds
A young man's deeds
No closer is his heart

He will kiss and embrace you
Until he thinks he has you won
Then he'll go away and leave you
For some other one

Yes indeed, and you could also try searches on 'New year', 'Hogmany', 'Twelfth night', 'Epiphany', 'Old Christmas', 'Plough Monday', etc.

ROLL DOWN TO RIO
By Rudyard Kipling
Roll down to Rio (Mainly Norfolk) This poem accompanied Rudyard Kipling's story The Beginning of the Armadillos from his book Just So Stories. Peter Bellamy sang it as Roll Down to Rio, accompanying himself on concertina, on his fourth album of songs set to Kipling's poems, Keep on Kipling.

Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman sang Follow Me 'Ome and Roll Down to Rio in 1998 on their CD Bonnet & Shawl. Jon Boden sang Rolling Down to Rio as the 10 February 2011 entry of his project A Folk Song a Day. The Young'uns sang Rolling Down to Rio in 2012 on their CD When Our Grandfathers Said No. They commented in their liner notes: Rolling Down to Rio appeared in The Beginning of the Armadillos, one of Kipling's Just So Stories, and was given this lovely tune by Peter Bellamy.

I've never sailed the Amazon, And I've never reached Brazil;
But the Don and Magdelana, They can go there when they will!

Yes, weekly from Southampton, Great steamers, white and gold,
Go rolling down to Rio (Roll down—roll down to Rio!)
And I'd like to roll to Rio Some day before I'm old!

Portuguese landed on the soil of Guanabara Bay on the1st January 1502.  The bay forms the opening of a river, hence the name ‘Rio de Janeiro’ which means ‘River of January’.

January's when cold winds do blow
February brings us frost and snow
March is when young lambs do play
April brings us flowers so gay
May is when the fields are green
June is when new hay is seen
July's days are very warm
August brings the thunderstorm
September's harvest fields are clear
October's when we brew fine beer
November's dreariest days in the year
December ends the fleeting year

January 13, 1864: Death of Stephen Foster.

Larry Kaplan wrote, in the introduction to his song "Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts," "Stephen Foster was only thirty-eight years old when he died, impoverished and alone, in New York City. In his pocket at the time of his death was a small piece of paper containing the first few lyrics of, perhaps, his next song. Foster lived and wrote music in a time when America as a nation was desperately trying to define (or redefine) its own identity, a time of intense nationalism, and yet a time of civil war. Perhaps more than any other popular musician of his time, he helped to shape some of that identity."

DEAR FRIENDS AND GENTLE HEARTS
by Larry Kaplan

Down at Bellevue Hospital,
Out on those nameless wards,
Tonight a young man passed away
Alone, without a word.
Brought there from a boarding house
On the Bowery downtown,
And on his bed a list of things
The nurses there had found.
A coat, a hat, his pants, a vest,
And a beat-up pair of shoes,
And, in his pocket, signed by him,
A dollar I.O.U.;
And a slip of folded paper
Torn off from a paper bag:
The first words of another song
This whole world might have had.

CHORUS (after each verse):
"Dear friends and gentle hearts ... "
Wherever your last songs may be,
Are they lost out in America
Between the centuries?
Are the melodies still waiting
For the ones who need to hear,
Though the piano halls and minstrel shows
Have faded through the years?

Well, the hospital had sent for me,
But no more would they do,
My name and address taken from
Poor Stephen's I.O.U.
They said "He's just a vagabond;
So many more like him.
They spend the last few cents they have
On poor man's rum and gin.
But hard times in America
Are hard times for us all.
Some folks bide for better days;
Some must take the fall.
Some can turn to poetry,
Or lose themselves in song;
Some set out to change the world,
Then lose the path they're on.

So, yes, I knew this gentleman;
Perhaps you've heard the cheers
When Mr. Foster graced this country's
Finest halls for years.
And he led us in the choruses
This whole great nation knew,
But he never recognized his worth
Or what his songs could do.
Now pride brought down by poverty
Is such a tragic thing;
No matter who the man may be,
It steals most precious things.
It takes the faith to know yourself;
It robs the will to try.
But, if it spares your poetry
The music never dies.

Though we seek mirth and beauty, and music light and gay,
There are frail forms fainting at the door.
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say,
"Oh, hard times, come again no more."

STEPHEN FOSTER SONG
by Teresina Huxtable

Those whose days were like your own
Are scattered now across the years
Share no countries, plans, or times
Though once we lived on common ground.

CHORUS (after each verse):
Is someone left to know the way,
Protect us, bring us home again?
Sit at table one more time,
Sing that Stephen Foster song?

If we knew then of leaving home,
But tens and twelves are unafraid.
Foresight's dear and hindsight's not,
And far apart is how we've grown.

Roads and paths come overgrown,
Lose the time and lose the way.
Gather those around me now,
I set a table of my own.

25 Jan - Robert Burns was even more prolific, and some Burns songs were already suggested in this discussion last January. Ewan MacColl shares the same birthday and also wrote a great many songs; the best known to the general public are probably THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE and DIRTY OLD TOWN .

This year, 30 Jan marks the 50th anniversary of the shooting by British paratroopers of unarmed civilians in Derry, Northern Ireland. The infamous Bloody Sunday, the occasion a civil rights march. A BBC Radio 4 documentary about Bloody Sunday broadcast today (22 Jan 2022, 8-9 pm GMT)open with a brief soundclip of marchers singing
WE SHALL OVERCOME . Another American civil rights song, WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED , was popular among Northern Irish civil rights campaigners of the time.

Geoff Lawes described William Joyce, aka Lord Haw Haw, as an Englishman. I thought William Joyce was Irish. Actually, he was born in the U.S. to an Irish father and an Anglo-Irish (English born) mother. The family returned to Ireland, where Joyce was brought up. Joyce lived in England from his teens and identified as English but that was an adopted persona. I read that he became a German citizen in 1940. He was never a British citizen so technically could not be guilty of treason to the United Kingdom. Joyce did carry a British passport when he went to Germany. He had obtained it by making false statements regarding his nationality. see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Joyce

Subject: RE: The DT MacColl song listing from Geoff Lawes
From: Felipa
Date: 25 Jan 22 - 02:10 PM

A GREAT MANY of the songs Geoff Lawes attributes to Ewan MacColl were older songs that MacColl recorded(and/or published in a songbook) and didn't compose: Farewell to Tarwathie, The Sweet Kumadie, Mary Hamilton, Our Goodman, Lambkin, Will Ye Go to Sheriffmuir, An Old Man Came Over the Lea, Cruising Round Yarmouth, Wee German Lairdie, Wae's Me for Prince Chairlie, Trooper and the Maid, The Trooper Cut Down in his Prime, The Newcombe Gauger, The Gairdner Child, The Earl of Errol ... the list goes on

The Folksingers' Ball is a modern parody which mentions MacColl and a great many other singers, but which MacColl neither recorded nor wrote.

Springhill Mine Disaster is by Peggy Seeger, MacColl's wife who both composed songs are her own and together with Ewan.

Many other songs on the list were MacColl compositions, including Freeborn Man of the Travelling People, Joy of Living, Go Down You Murderers (The Ballad of Tim Evans), Sweet Thames Flow Softly .

I think with Ewan MacColl there is a clear delineation between songs he wrote or co-wrote, and other songs that he recorded (mainly traditional songs, but MacColl recorded an album of Robbie Burns' songs as well). The one place there is sometimes confusion is whether a song was composed by Peggy Seeger or Ewan MacColl, as they were close collaborators.

In the case of Burns, he adapted folksongs as well as writing original poetry. So sometimes you will find a Burns version and other versions of a song such as Aye Waukin' O or The Curragh of Kildare.

I was thinking of what we would sing to commemorate Pete Seeger (birthday 3 May). He wrote songs but was more important as a performer and leader. There are also songs which Pete had a part in adapting and arranging, such as We Shall Overcome and Wimoweh.

Felipa, the songs which I copied and pasted just above are the songs which are listed for the DT when " Ewan MacColl" is entered in the search window at the top of the discussion forum. Yes, some of the songs in the list were clearly not written by him.

Pete Seeger and Percy French were both born in May and both died in JANUARY. I have added them to the Any May Songs thread. This month I heard someone dedicate a Percy French song to the author on the anniversary of his death, but on consideration, birthdays are usually the suitable time for commemorating deceased singers and songwriters, though of course we sing some of their songs all year round.

Another song to commemorate Bloody Sunday Derry, N Ireland 30 Jan 1972 is Séamus Heaney's THE ROAD TO DERRY. The lyrics have been posted on a Heaney Poem thread on Mudcat https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=152057. I've found recordings of the poem recited, but not of it sung. Some people do sing it as a song.

SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY (RAP)

Right from the start this here's a rebel song
It's from the heart I wanna tell you 'bout a wrong
Committed by Britain back in the day
Fourteen murdered, they refused to be slaves
To the crown

In Derry Town
They wouldn't bow down
So they were shot down

A peaceful protest the turnout was large
So the soldiers decided to show who was in charge
Vexed so they flexed, did what papas can do best
When the smoke had cleared fourteen were laid to rest
No riots, no lootin' to start off the shootin'
People emulated King not Seale or Newton
Things forever changed after that afternoon
Brothers started doin' what they had to do
On Bloody Sunday

Sunday Bloody Sunday - still haunted by the cries
Sunday Bloody Sunday - twenty five years of lies

How long must we sing this song
Till the government finally admits that they were wrong

And finally show some decency
Reparation to each family
Treat our people with some dignity
You know their shit really gets to me
The way they try to deny my history
Twenty five years on our people gettin' strong
Thought may hit the Brits it's time to move on
Order the border to be cast out to sea
'Cause that is where it was meant to be
And that would be an appropriate way
To honour those who were slain
On Bloody Sunday

There are several songs and poems entitled "Bloody Sunday" - some about the 1972 tragedy, some about other massacres. And the title SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY has been used more than once. U2, Songwriters: Adam Clayton / Larry Mullen / Dave Evans / Paul Hewson : I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long? How long?

John Lennon:
Well it was Sunday Bloody Sunday
When they shot the people there.
The cries of thirteen martyrs
Filled the Derry air
Is there any one amongst you
Dare to blame it on the kids?
Not a soldier boy was bleeding
When they nailed the coffin lids!

And the one I already posted, by Chris Byrne of Seanchaí
You can also find a French translation of that one at https://www.antiwarsongs.org/canzone.php?lang=en&id=4572|

"Domhnach na Fola" is Irish Gaelic for Bloody Sunday, or "the Sunday of blood". But no, I don't have the lyrics. That song was a response to the Saville Report which accepted UK military responsibility for the 1972 killings. Most of the "Domhnach na Fola" videos coming up on youtube are about another bloody Sunday, during the Irish war of independence, when 14 people were killed in Croke Park sportsground in Nov. 1920.

Here's a new one,

Battle of January Sicketh
(Tune: 8th of January
Dialect: Missedusurpy)

In 2021 we tried our Coup d’etat
A Steel the Vote march on the Capital
Teutonic horns, machetes and camo flack jacks
Snorting meth and coke, we put our Glocks in our packs.

They fired their tear gas but our riot kept righton a coming
Our boys let us through the barricades and Freedom Heros owned the day
We killed some cops, then they walked us out like tourists
Confederate flags a-waving we made our rebel getaway.

Ole BoneSpurs said we could take them by surprise
Sick us Proud Patriots on the Gov’ment, we’ll see who’s telling lies
March up to that Libertarred Congress, kill Pelosi and Pence
TeaRump’s in the White House laughing at yuh Dems.

We couldn’t find AntiFa, so we killed with fire extinguishers
We chased Pense to his bunker with our crow bars and tasers
We ran real fast and the Guard was standing down
We Tea Partied the Capital with an insurrection.

DEM NAYNTN YANUAR     [Ninth of January]
Dem Nayntn Yanuar [Ninth of January],” a Jewish folk song that references the Bloody Sunday March of 1905, was originally collected by ethnomusicologist Moshe Beregovsky. Eléonore Weill, vocalist and flutist for new-traditional klezmer band Tsibele, composed and arranged a new melody for the band. “Dem Nayntn Yanuar” is on Tsibele’s album It’s Dark Outside – Indroysn iz Finster.

Translation:

“On the ninth of January we wept and wailed
As they took our brothers from the stock exchange to the jail
Soon as we got there, we all took a vow:

“Brothers and sisters, don’t be afraid of any jails
Come out of the jails to awaken the people,
Come out of the jails with bombs and dynamite.
Destroy the tyrants who are sucking our blood.

“They suck our blood like it’s the best wine
The czar and the government should go to hell–
And they will.

“When someone yelled: Jews, Muslims, and Christians,
We responded with: Down with Capitalism!
Then we, the workers, will raise our heads.
The world will be renewed,
when we, the workers, are free.”

Tsibele is a new-traditional klezmer band based in Brooklyn, NY. Tsibele emphasizes Klezmer’s relationship to regional musical genres and dialects by drawing from the Jewish music of Romania and Moldova, 19th century secular Yiddish folk songs from Eastern Europe, and contemporary folk and improvised music. The band includes Zoë Aqua (violin), Eva Boodman (trumpet), Zoe Guigueno (bass), Hannah Temple (accordion) and Eléonore Weill (wooden flutes and vocals).

08 January 2023 13:15 BBC1 S0ngs of Praise On 1 January 1773, John Newton’s now famous words were first performed in the parish church where he was curate. 250 years on, Claire visits that same church to discover the remarkable story behind the hymn, the extraordinary life of its composer and the reasons for the composition’s enduring power. In Olney, Claire meets local experts who reflect on the life of John Newton, from his early years of debauchery as a sailor and then as a slave trader to his later life as a dedicated clergy man, hymn writer and abolitionist. Claire hears how a moment of epiphany at sea sparked a deep Christian that faith helped him to realise the full horror of his actions and compelled him to spend the rest of his life serving others and striving to abolish the evil of slavery.

The midwinter majesty of THE MARI LWYD

Mari is taken around a village traditionally, often between Christmas Day and Twelfth Night, She is dressed with festive lights and decorations, and is usually accompanied by an ostler. When the group gets to a house, they sing Welsh language songs or wassails, or more traditionally indulge in a ritual called pwnco: an exchange of rude rhymes with the person who lives there.

3rd January 1870   Work on the Brooklyn Bridge began.

BROOKLYN BRIDGE by Anaïs Mitchell from the album: Anaïs Mitchell, 2022
The song is about a young woman who is leaving her home in Brooklyn to go to the city. She is sad to leave her home and her friends, but she is excited to see the sights and sounds of the city.

THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE by Barry Manilow from the album: This Is My Town: Songs of New York Year, 2017
The song is a love letter to New York City, and specifically to the Brooklyn Bridge. Manilow reflects on how the city has changed over the years, but the bridge remains a constant.

9 January 1923 Edith Thompson and Frederick Bywaters were executed for the murder of Edith's husband. Edith appears to have been innocent of the killing, and her lover claimed he had been attacked first and acted in self-defence.

LLOYD GEORGE

In the UK the Old Age Pensions Act was passed in August 1908 and the first payments were made on 1 January 1909.
David Lloyd George, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in the government led by Herbert Asquith, made a speech warning that if the Liberal Party did not pass radical legislation, the working-class would vote for the Labour Party at the next election.

Lyrics
1.
Well Ah'd walk from 'ere to Skipton,
Ten mile o' clarty lane, (clarty=muddy)
If Ah could see 'im face to face
Ah'd thank 'im for 'is pain.

Chorus
Cos 'E took me out o' t' work'ouse
An' 'e gives me life that's free,
Five shillin' a week for cheatin' death,
That's what Lloyd George gives me.

2.
Well 'e gives me leet an' firin' (=lighting and heating costs)
An' flour to bake me bread
An' tea to mash me every meal
An' sup until Ah'm dead,
An' Ah've nowt to do but thank 'im
An' mek a cross wi' t' pen,
Five shillin' a week for nowt but that,
Aye, 'e's the best of men.

3.
Well Ah don't know much about politics,
But Ah do love that lord,
For 'e spends 'is money like a king When other folks is lowered,
An' Ah know lots of owd fellers
Who are past their seventieth year,
Lloyd George 'e addles brass for them
To buy a sup o' beer.

4.
Well if my owd man were 'ere today
'E'd say that Ah spock true,
Though 'e never liked them Liberal lot An' 'e allus voted blue.
But parson's wife she telt me
That soon we're goin' to t' poll; Well Ah 'ope she's reet, Ah'll vote for 'im
With all me 'eart an' soul.

5.
Well Ah don't know where 'e comes from
'Appen it's down Leeds way,
But every neet an' mornin'
For 'is long life Ah'll pray.
'Cos 'e took me etc…

On this day in 1848, James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s sawmill in California to spark the great gold rush.

Days of 49

Jeff Warner sang Days of '49 in 2018 on his WildGoose CD Roam the Country Through. He noted: John Galusha gave this to the Warners in 1941. A nostalgic look back at the California gold rush camps, it first appears in print in San Francisco in 1872, a minstrel song (without chorus) written by Charles Bensell (aka Charley Rhoades), d. 1877, with a tune different from Galusha's. The Galusha-Warner version appeared in John and Alan Lomax's Folk Song USA in 1947 and has become the standard melody for the song."

MV Princess Victoria (1946)
During a severe European windstorm on 31 January 1953, she sank in the North Channel with the loss of 135 lives. This was then the deadliest maritime disaster in United Kingdom waters since World War II.

31st January 1953 A tidal surge came down the north sea and flooded low lying Canvey Island in the Thames estuary . Fifty eight people lost their lives and the island had to be evacuated.

Killed a wild swan
It was a kind of omen
Of everything to come
I can't believe it's happening
And that it's happening now
I can't believe it's happening
It's coming true somehow

Chorus On Canvey Island, 1953
Many lives were lost
With the records of a football team
I can't believe it's happening
And that it's happening now
I can't believe it's happening
It's coming true somehow

Don't you think it's strange, you know
The way it all works out
Brace yourself for storms and Summer droughts, so

Sometimes it's hard to tell
If it's going well
You know the odds against it
Were so phenomenal
I can't believe it's happening
And that it's happening now
I can't believe it's happening
It's coming true somehow

Chorus

Don't you think it's strange, you know
The way it all works out
Brace yourself for storms and Summer droughts

Don't you think it's strange, you know
The way it all works out
You start with everything then end without

Oh!
Oh, oh!
Oh

Oh it's happening now
Oh it's happening now
Oh

William Thompson wrote some poems about the sinking of the Princess Victoria ferry between Scotland and Northern Ireland, 31 Jan 1953
William was an ardent supporter of the lifeboat service RNLI

https://williamthompsonpoems.blogspot.com/2008/02/nancy-bryson-heroine-of-princess.html

HEROINE OF THE PRINCESS VICTORIA    William Thompson

It was a day of tragedy near Ulster’s lovely shore,
When many hoped to see the land, saw it again no more,
For precious lives were lost upon that tragic day -
Upon a wild and stormy sea where death alone held sway.

The “Princess Victoria” left Stranraer for dear old Ireland,
Her Captain was James Ferguson, who then was in command.
On leaving fair Lough Ryan to cross the sea to Larne
This noble vessel from the seas soon came to grief and harm.

The tempest raged on fiercely, there were snow blizzards, too,
The vessel soon heeled over and she was hid from view;
Her radio operator sent his message far and near,
While those on board the doomed ship were all distraught with fear.

There was a lady missionary on board the ship that day
Intent on visiting Erin to enjoy a pleasant stay;
Ere she returned to Africa’s land, where for twenty years or more
She laboured for the Lord, ere she saw her native shore.

Her name was Nancy Bryson, and she lost her life that day,
Her body was recovered from the waters of the bay –
Identified, and laid to rest, her labours at an end,
A ministering angel on that ship, the little children’s friend.

The last few hours of her life were gladly given o’er
In bringing consolation to hearts now sad and sore;
She spoke of Jesus and His love, and all His power to save,
She told the tale of heaven and home, and life beyond the grave.

As Nancy Bryson spoke those words to many a troubled heart
Who soon would bid each one farewell, as death must soon them part,
She saw the power of Jesus’ name, to calm and bring relief
To troubled hearts in sorrow, and in the hour of grief.

As Nancy Bryson told the tale of Jesus’ wondrous love
We know that many passed that day into the home above.
Where there is no more sorrow, no parting, and no sea,
Upon whose shore no storm will beat through all Eternity.

Tho’ Nancy Bryson has passed on, ‘tis true she speaketh still,
Her fame has gone through all the world, and surely ever will.
God had her there on purpose, upon that ship that day,
To point the soul to Jesus, the true and living way.

The husband and the children, though parted from her here,
Now miss her tender presence, her words of hope and cheer;
But in God’s happy heaven, where partings all are o’er
The death divided shall clasp hands, where death divides no more.

Dear Nancy Bryson feared not death upon the ocean wave,
Her trust was in the Saviour, who triumphed o’er the grave;
Her mind was kept in perfect peace, until her work was done –
The “Princess Victoria” heroine, if ever there was one.

The lifeboatmen were all intent and eager for to save,
Yet in spite of all their efforts many found a watery grave:
From Cloughey and Portpatrick, and the village of the ‘Dee,
These Coxswains braved the terrors of that wild, tempestuous sea.

My simple tale has now been told of Nancy Bryson’s fame,
So that your trust, dear reader, may be in Jesus’ name;
And when our day is ended, and life’s short voyage o’er,
We’ll anchor in that haven where tempests howl no more.

Her name was missing from the list of those saved from the sea,
But in the Book of Life ‘tis found, “Saved for Eternity”.
This noble woman was the Lord’s, in life, as well as death,
And sought to comfort all on board until her latest breath.

This tragedy of the sea has led to a Newtownards Flag Day,
So support the Institution and support it generously.
We have two Lifeboat Stations, one in Cloughey and the ‘Dee –
They give their service freely, these heroes of the sea.

------
a poem published in 1953 doesn't appear to me to be singable. Description on Abebooks page
The poet Roy McFadden, 1921-1999, has been somewhat overlooked among northern Irish poets. This elegy, on the sinking of the ferry the Princess Victoria, was written after the publication of his first three anthologies, and is rare.

"There are so many ways of falling out of life:-The leaping tiger of disease, the stalking over; The innocent step and stumble; the shout and hurtle of wheels; The gross and subtle armouries of war. And always in parenthesis, the white And hardening sleep of the sleeper slipping unto death"

THREE MCFARLANDS

Bein' in the month of January, a very cold time indeed,
When seven of our jolly teamsters left our gang with speed.
Bein' in the month of February, it would make your poor heart ache
To see such loads and drifted roads our horses had to take.

But I can't find an on-line recording ofit yet. Can anyone?

Further to Date: 01 Jan 23 - 04:33 AM 250 years of AMAZING GRACE. The hymn was written for a New Year service in 1773.

The Earl of Dartmouth had a substantial country seat at Sandwell Hall in the Midlands, demolished in 1828. He also had a London townhouse at Blackheath. With all his other properties, he had no need of the Olney Great House, standing behind the churchyard by the river. Rev John Newton was therefore able to have the use of it for his Sunday schools and prayer meetings. Both Cowper and Newton wrote hymns for the occasion when in 1769 the Tuesday payer meeting for adults was moving into the largest room in the Great House. Jesus, where’er thy people meet’ written by Cowper and ‘On Opening a Place for Social Prayer’ by Newton. Cowper and Newton Museum

It was January 1, 1773. John Newton led his congregation down the road from the parish church in Olney, England, to Lord Dartmouth’s Great Hall to sing “new” music not traditionally allowed by the Anglican Church. Newton loved to write hymns and poetry, and the hymn he wrote for this day was special. It spoke of his conversion, of his self-proclaimed wretchedness, and of the saving power of God’s grace. Since then, the words of “Amazing Grace” have struck a chord with millions across cultures and generations, and its popularity has never wavered.

‘At about a ¼ past 11 o’Clock we cross’d the Antarctic Circle...and are undoubtedly the first and only Ship that ever cross’d that line.’ — Captain James Cook, 17 January 1773.

This was in the second of Cook’s three voyages of exploration. His ship was the Resolution. His first voyage was in the Endeavour. His third voyage was to discover the Northwest Passage. HMS Resolution, to be commanded by Cook, and HMS Discovery, commanded by Charles Clerke, started from Plymouth in 1776. On 14 February 1779, Captain Cook attempted to kidnap Kalani?opu?u, the ruling chief of the island of Hawaii. The decision to hold him in exchange for a stolen longboat was the fatal error of Cook's final voyage, and led to his death at Kealakekua Bay.

The Song About Captain Cook by Peter Combe

In Marton town not far from the sea
There was a young boy who grew up to be
A Yorkshire man in every way
From Whitby town to Robin Hood's Bay

At the age of 18, a labourer's son
Fit and strong and six foot one
He dreamed of a life on the wide open sea
And knew that soon that's where he would be

CHORUS
He sailed from Plymouth away from England
Cape Horn, Tahiti then Botany Bay
On the good ship Endeavour and onto where ever
The coast of Australia showed him the way

LOVE TO BE WITH YOU    by Andy Irvine

We pulled up our anchor and set sail in sweet November
The day was fine, the sun did shine
Such moments I remember
Your face so sad and lonely, fading from my view
But some small part of me remains with you

Sometimes I feel I must fly away
Sometimes I feel goodbye’s a word I just can’t say
Bud I’d love to be with you
I’d love to be with you

Outside the blizzard raging cares not for our distress
The bitter taste of failure so nearly sweet success
Brave enough we wer? alas, to no avail
Such stories we could tell you
Had w? lived to tell the tale

22 January On this day in 1944, the Allied army landing began at Anzio, Italy.

D-Day Dodgers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE5Cgvc3JqU Ian Campbell Folk Group

Wikipedia; The song was written in November 1944 by Lance-Sergeant Harry Pynn of the Tank Rescue Section, 19 Army Fire Brigade, who was with the 78th Infantry Division just south of Bologna, Italy. There were many variations, but the song generally and sarcastically referred to how easy their life in Italy was. Although Hamish Henderson did not write the song, he did collect different versions of it and it is attributed to him in the sleeve notes of the Ian Campbell Folk Group's "Contemporary Campbells". Many different variations have been recorded.

We're the D-Day Dodgers out in Italy Always on the vino, always on the spree.
Eighth Army scroungers and their tanks We live in Rome – among the Yanks.
We are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy.

The Volturno and Cassino were taken in our stride. We didn't have to fight there. We just went for the ride.
Anzio and Sangro were all forlorn. We did not do a thing from dusk to dawn.
For we are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy.
