12 February 1929   Death of British socialite, stage actress and producer, Lillie Langtry nicknamed "The Jersey Lily". Lillie Langtry was the inspiration for The Who's 1967 hit single "Pictures of Lily", as mentioned in Pete Townshend's 2012 memoir, Who I Am.

Lillie Langtry from Wikipedia     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lillie_Langtry
SONGS ABOUT LILY LANGTRY
PICTURES OF LILY
I used to wake up in the morning
I used to feel so bad
I got so sick of having sleepless nights
I went and told my dad

He said, 'Son now here's some little something'
And stuck them on my wall
And now my nights ain't quite so lonely
In fact I, I don't feel bad at all

Pictures of Lily made my life so wonderful
Pictures of Lily helped me sleep at night
Pictures of Lily solved my childhood problems
Pictures of Lily helped me feel alright

Pictures of Lily
Lily, oh Lily
Lily, oh Lily
Pictures of Lily

And then one day things weren't quite so fine
I fell in love with Lily
I asked my dad where Lily I could find
He said, 'Son, now don't be silly'

'She's been dead since 1929'
Oh, how I cried that night
If only I'd been born in Lily's time
It would have been alright

Pictures of Lily made my life so wonderful
Pictures of Lily helped me sleep at night

For me and Lily are together in my dreams
And I ask you, 'Hey mister, have you ever seen'
'Pictures of Lily?'

David Lawrieston (or Lowrieston) was the head of a team of ten sealers set down on Open Bay, an island off the coast of New Zealand, by Captain Bader. Bader set sail for Sydney on 16 February 1810, intending to return to Open Bay to pick up the sealers, but his ship went down with all hands. The sealers were only rescued and returned to Sydney in the last days of 1813.

The song, DAVY LOWSTON , recounts these events. It follows the tune of Sam Hall / Captain Kidd. It has been recorded by Martin Carthy, June Tabor, the Australian group The Roaring Forties, and others.

The folk process has created many variants of the song. Some get the dates wrong, the Captain's name wrong, and all have turned Lowrieston into Lowston. Most say, or imply, that many of the men died on Open Bay, but there is no evidence of this.

I'd encourage anyone interested in the events and/or the song to read Frank Fyfe, The story of David Lowston, a pre-colonial NZ song, available at
https://www.folksong.org.nz/davylows/lowstonfyfe.html

6 February 1958: Seven Manchester United footballers (the Busby Babes) were killed when their plane crashed in thick snow at Munich airport. An eighth, Duncan Edwards, died 15 days later in hospital. Fifteen other passengers also died.

THE FLOWERS OF MANCHESTER was sent into a folk magazine, Sing, anonymously in October 1958. The words were printed, but no music accompanied it, apart from a note saying it was to the tune of High Germany. It later transpired that the lyrics were actually written by Eric Winter, the editor of Sing. The first known musical recording was by The Spinners, a North-West based folk group, on their album ‘Quayside Songs Old and New’ on an old HMV-CLP1500 educational label issued in 1962. It was recorded at Cecil Sharp house by Peter Kennedy.

The song MUNICH AIR DISASTER 1958 by Morrissey holds a deep meaning and tells a tragic story that impacted the world of football. Released in 2004 as a tribute to the victims of the Munich air crash, the song captures the emotional turbulence of the event that occurred on February 6, 1958.

9 February, 1957 John Axon, an English train driver from Stockport, lost his life while trying to stop the runaway freight train he was driving after its automatic brake pipe fractured. Axon's engine crashed into another freight train, but his brave action saved the lives of of the many children being carried on his train. Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger, and Charles Parker created the first of the Radio Ballads, The Ballad Of John Axon, around this story.

and I think I might cry

Subject: The Fethard Lifeboat Disaster, Ireland 20 Feb 1914
From: Felipa
Date: 22 Feb 22 - 04:01 PM

http://irelandbyways.co.uk/saltees-keeraghs-co-wexford/ "[On 20] February 1914 'The Mexico', a Norwegian barque, ran aground in stormy seas. The Fethard lifeboat was launched, but both vessels were smashed to pieces by mighty waves. Nine of the 14 crew were swept to their deaths; the remaining five joined the eight surviving sailors on the exposed reef , where they remained miserably clinging to rocks while the storm continued unabated.

Several attempts to rescue them were foiled before two brave men, Bill Duggan and Jim Wickham of the Rosslare Fort lifeboat, took a dinghy and ferried the survivors two at a time from their ice cold rocks. The operation needed 6 trips in stormy seas to bring all to safety, but on the second of these, the dinghy was holed. For the remaining trips the sea was kept out by a loaf of bread wrapped in oilskins, plugged into the opening.

The incident is known as THE FETHARD LIFEBOAT DISASTER
There were poems and song composed in the aftermath of the disaster, including
THE FETHARD LIFEBOAT CREW and THE MEXICO
