The helmet protected the pilot of a tiny single-engine aircraft (such as the British Hurricane or the Japanese Zero) from environmental factors that hinder flying performance, specifically the cold, the wind, and the noise. Kamikaze had to reach their targets, so they had to be adequately dressed.

Many pictures of kamikaze pilots show them wearing a bandana with the Japanese flag (Rising Sun).
If they didn't wear a helmet they risked the bandana slipping, and getting the sun in their eyes ;)

When violently manoeuvring an aircraft to evade an opponent or to get into position to engage him, it was entirely possible that one's head might be dashed against the canopy which, in the case of the A6M and several other Japanese aircraft, had framed panels. Those can cold-cock a pilot or badly cut him.

Made all the more believable by another guy who worked on his TV shows (who claimed he was clearly dyslexic) and would not follow the prompt script claiming he was improvising.

Mrs Backwoodsperson and I were watching a TV programme a while ago, in which the procedure for execution by lethal injection was described. Hearing that the injection-site(s) are swabbed first was a real ‘WTF?’ moment. If it wasn’t part of such a cruel, barbaric, and tragic event it would have been funny.
