Subject: RE: BS: Slavery and the White House From: Thompson Date: 12 Feb 21 - 05:02 AM There's a monument at the US Capitol - a simple plaque and a block of rough stone - but I can't find any reference to one at the White House. |
Subject: RE: BS: Slavery and the White House From: robomatic Date: 11 Feb 21 - 04:03 PM I don't think I gave it a thought until I heard First Lady Michelle Obama mention it, and now I think of it a lot. I'm so glad she was First Lady for a couple of terms. She and her husband were a breath of sorely needed fresh air in our government, and I don't think their effect has been fully dislocated by the sad lot of negative posers who followed for the next four years. Lincoln made the comment during the American Civil War that has stayed with me, in effect that the progress of the war may undo all the labor that was performed by slavery. I think that statement may be true figuratively at least. But through history we cannot deny that it did, indeed, happen. |

Subject: RE: BS: Salvery and the White House From: Rapparee Date: 11 Feb 21 - 09:12 AM It's never been secret, just embarrassing. DC was a slave-holding town. |
Subject: RE: BS: Salvery and the White House From: Stilly River Sage Date: 11 Feb 21 - 08:45 AM There are lots of references to it, and it can certainly be found in histories of the building. Michelle Obama mentioned it routinely. |
Subject: BS: Salvery and the White House From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 11 Feb 21 - 05:54 AM I just read in an online article that the White House was originally built, and rebuilt in 1814 wit the help of slave labour. Is there a memorial to this at the White House, and if not, why not? |
