Subject: Tune Req: The Marmite Song (What is the air?) From: Pat deVerse Date: 12 Feb 21 - 09:05 AM I have come across a recording of Frank Harte singing 'The Marmite Song, and I have the words, courtesy of Terry Moylan's latest book on the songs of Frank Harte. Unfortunately, I cannot read music and as a result I can't identify the air that Kevin McGrath used for his song. The recording in the ITMA archives was recorded at a Goilín singing session in Corbett's Pub in Dublin, and it is quite noisy. If anyone could identify the air or better still let me know where I could hear the air, I'd be very grateful, Pat 'de Verse' Burke. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Marmite Song (What is the air?) From: Ross Campbell Date: 14 Feb 21 - 10:31 PM I've been singing the Marmite Song since Kevin McGrath kindly gave me one of his song-books at a long-ago Fylde Folk Festival. My colleague Ron Baxter (SailorRon on Mudcat) had been telling me for a couple of years about this man's hilarious contributions to Ron's annual singaround session, and I finally caught up with him when he sang this song. Some people find they get a very satisfying sense of order from the song, and a pleasing explanation for why Marmite and Bovril are scarcely ever found in even remote proximity. Thanks to FreddyHeadey for posting the links above to Kevin McGrath and Frank Harte, great singers both. I haven't drifted too far away from the original! Ross |
