A friend of mine sang this at a singaround this afternoon, and it brought me to tears. I've asked her to send me the lyrics, but feel free to post them if you have them. My stepson's Shih Tzu Harry is 16 years old now, and his brother Ralph (my dog) died about three years ago. We have another old Labrador, Madeleine, and she thinks I belong to her. And we've had other old dogs. They're so lovely, and they're so much work. I wouldn't miss a moment.

I can't get that link to open, Joe. When you fix that just delete this post.

Here's a SoundCloud take of the song by PattiCasey.

I think maybe it doesn't work outside the United States. -Joe-

Old Man
Patti Casey in C. Start on A.

Well, you’re up before the eastern sky turns red, -5 5 43221154
But you lie awake real quiet in your bed -5 5 43221154
And you need to go, but there’s no one up to take you. -6 -7 1 234543221
So you close your eyes and wait for light to show, -5-5 -6-6 43211 -7-6 -71 -7
Underneath the door where friends come and go -5-5 -6-6 43321 -7 1

Well you think you hear me stirring just a trace
So you stand real close and breath on my face.
And finally I rise to take you once around the block,
Where you stop at every tree along the way
Oh come on old man I haven’t got all day.

And I leave for years each day when you’re in jail 5544332211
But you always smile me home nose to tail
I try to make you eat, but these days it takes a while
And could I really be so foolish as to think that you do not see
That I buried all of your vitamins in that cheese

Chorus:
I’ve loved you nearly half my life. -715-75-61-7-6-5
I’ve known no sweeter soul. -715-75-61-7-6-5
You taught me how to howl, -715-75-61-7-6-5
And how to live with just one bowl. -6-6 -715-75 4 3 2 1-7 1

Now your face is gray and sometimes your hips give out
And now and then, you go in the house
I won’t keep you holding on, just because I want you near me.
But I tell you that I love you every single day
So there’s really nothing standing in your way.

Chorus:
And I’ve loved you nearly half my life. -715-75-61-7-6-5
I’ve known no sweeter soul. -715-75-61-7-6-5
You taught me how to howl, -715-75-61-7-6-5
And how to live with just one bowl. -6-6-7 1 5-7 54 6 7 8

My friend sent me the lyrics, and I've cleaned them up.

OLD MAN
(Patti Casey)

Well, you’re up before the eastern sky turns red,
But you lie awake real quiet in your bed
And you need to go, but there’s no one up to take you.
So you close your eyes and wait for light to show,
Underneath the door where friends come and go

Well you think you hear me stirring just a trace
So you stand real close and breath on my face.
And finally I rise to take you once around the block,
Where you stop at every tree along the way
Oh come on old man I haven’t got all day.

I leave for years each day while you’re in jail
But you always smile me home nose to tail
I try to make you eat, but these days it takes a while
And could I really be so foolish as to think that you don't see
That I buried all of your vitamins in that cheese

CHORUS:
And I’ve loved you nearly half my life.
I’ve known no sweeter soul.
You taught me how to howl,
And how to live with just one bowl.

Now your face is gray and sometimes your hips give out
And now and then, you go in the house
I won’t keep you holding on, just because I want you near me.
But I tell you that I love you every single day
So there’s really nothing standing in your way.

CHORUS

We also have 4 old rescue dogs, all in double digit years, great song. Right up there with Old Shep. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of jamming with Patti Casey here in Montpelier, a great musician who knows a million songs!
