Here's Nellie Wilson doing it - he adds another half verse, I've included it here:

ACROSS THE BORDERLINE (Ry Cooder/John Hiatt/Jim Dickinson, 1993)

There's a place, where I've been told,
Every street is paved with gold
And it's just across the borderline
And when it's time to take your turn
There's a lesson that you must learn
You could lose more than you'll ever find.

And when you reach that broken promised land
And every dream slips though your hand
You know it's too late to change your mind
Cause you pay the price to come so far
Just to wind up where you are
And you're still just across the borderline.

Up and down The Rio Grande
A thousand footprints in the sand
Reveal a secret no one can define
The river flows on like a breath
In between our life and death
Who쳌fs the next to cross the borderline.

Hope remains when pride is gone
And it keeps you moving on
Carrying you across the borderline

Fine version. Anderson has a great voice and fits the song nicely.    Also really like the John Hiatt and Flaco Jimenez version as well as Ry Cooder's.

On the sound track to the movie "The Border", Freddie Fender does this in the key of "D". Do you know the rest of the chords? It's a fairly simple song but it has a few minor chords thrown in there that are confusing my limited ability. Thanks

ACROSS THE BORDERLINE
(Ry Cooder/John Hiatt/Jim Dickinson)

There's a place, so I've been told,
Every street is paved with gold
And it's just across the borderline
And when it's time to take your turn
There's a lesson that you must learn
You may lose more than you'll ever hope to find.

(chorus)
And when you reach that broken promised land
And all your dreams slip though your hand
You have learned it's too late to change your mind
Cause you pay the price to come so far
Just to wind up where you are
And you're still just across the borderline.

Up and down The Rio Grande
A thousand foot prints in the sand
Reveal a secret no one can define
The river rolls on like a breath
In between our life and death
Tell me who is next to cross that borderline.

(chorus)
And when you reach that broken promised land
And all your dreams slip though your hand
You'll know it's too late to change your mind
Cause you pay the price to come so far
Just to wind up where you are
And you're still just across the borderline.
