Anyone remember The Drones? A great band, I thought. Saw them a couple of times. Good musicians and good songwriters. A shame they didn't stay together longer. But where are they all now? Cliff Stapleton has his own website I see, but does anyone know what became of Stephen Grocott, or Jon Petter?

I know of the Manchester punk band - formerly managed by Paul Morley of Art of Noise etc, and recently reformed;

And the Australian underground rock band that broke up in 2016;

But I don't think it's either of those that you're invoking here.

What were the folk band like? I love a good drone! In fact, I've just ordered this book...!

Don't know why you say "A shame they didn't stay together longer." As far as I know they are still going (and for instance have appeared regularly at the Islington Folk Club over the years), though as all the members are involved in a lot of other projects I don't think they peform as a group very much. I have seen Jon Petter for example in a number of other bands in London folk clubs.

Best bet is to look at the their website: The Drones.

Hey thanks Martin, that's great to hear! It must be a good 20 years since I last saw the band and I guess they had just disappeared below my radar (I don't get up to London much these days). Anyway I shall investigate their website and hopefully buy an album or two. The last time I saw them they only had a cassette available - which I still have, and still enjoy immensely. Some brilliant stuff on there.
